I know I’m late to the party but I have just started my first semester in grad school for my PhD in Astrophysics and finding your channel has helped calm my nerves a bit
Finished my 2nd year as a physics/math double with all As and 1 B (in E&M) I took Diff EQ, Intro to Coding in Java, Physics of Robotics, Chemistry 2 + Lab, and E&M. Honestly I'm just happy to be done with a lot of the generic intro courses and to start getting into some more complex stuff. Next semester I'm taking a course called Advanced Methods of Theoretical Physics which I'm SUPER excited for :)
Just got my hands on a computational physics textbook (apparently it's graduate level). Honestly the groups giving away free textbooks due to Covid is basically the only silver lining with this thing. But I think I'm at about 2 dozen physics textbooks now... @@theshaunsta Not a single soul apart from you will ever know your grades in a PhD degree. What matters is your research and the letter of recommendation from your advisor. Not a single grant or post doc job I applied for has ever asked me for my grades. I myself do not know what some of my grades in courses are. I used to care till my 3rd year and then stopped checking.
I think that makes sense. If your in grad school, you’re already suppose to maintain a 3.0 and above. On top of that, if you’re funded by the school you have to make a 3.5 gpa or higher. ( not sure if that part is universal). So in a PhD program grades are pretty much assumed you did well.
I'm heading into my final semester as an undergraduate student (not for physics but I still absolutely love your videos) and I was so glad to find out that I made the Dean's list again this last Spring! 4.0 GPA and my first graduate-level course! Now I am just preparing for my GRE exams and getting statements of purposes as well as my resume ready when it comes time for applications in a few months.
Congrats on finishing your General classes in grad school! I just found Out that I got a research scholarship for next year so I’ll be being a researcher come fall with ya 🤙🏽
I liked that your so real about grad school. I feel like others would be like "yeah grad school is not so difficult and Im doing fine" but you actually go more in depth and dont hide in a shell. Now I know what to expect if I tend to pursue my phd in physics
Keep up the work man I live in NM and plan on going to NMSU for either Engineering or Physics and I’m really exited to attend after watching your vids!!!
It's so cool to find that you find parts challenging i myself think of as challenging as well. For us, our species, it's great we are able to do what we've done :-)
Would also love to hear about your experience as a grad student in New Mexico in general. Teaching cal 3 took up a lot more time when it moved online, research really took a hit. Not working over the summer so I can focus on research, getting ready to defend in the fall.
Hey man I know you get this a lot but I wanted to say it myself. I'm a highschool junior right now and while I always kinda wanted to major in physics because of Feynman, DeGrasse Tyson, etc, you've really gotten me excited for it because you've been talking about the more complicated side. I don't understand 10% of the math and physics you say or do but that's exactly why I'm excited. Truly, thank you
This is the first I have run across you and I wanted to say "hi". I graduated from NMSU in 1992 with an MS in IE (applied statistics). I commend you for your excellent grades. I was just accepted to the PhD program at Northcentral University in Data Analytics. All online.
Congrats on succeeding in this miserable semester! Things went way better for me than I ever expected; thankfully I didn’t even have to worry about whether or not to pass/fail any classes. And now hopefully I don’t have to deal with topology for a year.
"With everything being online this semester I knew what my grades were already " Here I am with 4 weeks left and I literally don't know any grades in any class because either they havent graded any exams or havent applied the curve yet :). I could literally be failing a class and not know
Hey Andrew, I'm near the tail end of my finals week now. This is my second to last finals week as an undergrad! I just got grades back for my take home final for probability and the mean was crazy just like you were talking about in your E&M. The mean grade was a 97! One more final for real analysis left to submit..
High school junior here. My school online classes have been easy and great (except college statistics which is disgusting) and starting Calc 3 through Johns Hopkins in 2 weeks. I’m also self teaching Linear algebra and python so that’s fun. Your videos get me so excited to get to college and be able to learn truly interesting and challenging material. Thank you for making these videos!
hey! im in high school too and i was just wondering what resources you found helpful for calc 1, 2 and linear algebra... hope your college is going well!!
I don’t know why I watch these videos. I’m a junior in high school who took AP Algebra Based Physics, did very averagely, plan on majoring in history, and understand none of the concepts he describes in these videos. I just watch them and you still manage to make them interesting.
I'm doing electrical engineering and here's what I got.(this is my second semester of freshmen year) Calc 3 : B+ Physics2(EM) : A- Physics2 lab : A+ Computer Logic Design : A+ Tech writing: A+ Im reading Griffiths intro to electrodynamics right now during summer break, I'm really liking it so far! Any one have any other suggestions on other good phyics books like on classical , stat mech , relatively ect. for someone at my level? Cause I dont know whats good and whats not. Thanks! Good luck and be well smart people!
I wouldn't put a lot of effort into physics, just try to focus on probability for signals and random signals analysis and then of course theory of integral transforms
I'm happy to hear you're doing well, Andrew! Be proud of what you've achieved, it's a big deal: congrats! I'm taking the second semester courses, and I have to say that the only course I've been enjoying is the math one, hahah. Multivariable calculus is so cool! But yeah, online classes suck. I miss my uni.
Well, my semester went alright. I had 3 classes. Calc 3 / Physics II (Intro E&M) / Programming 2 (C++). I got A's in Physics & Programming 2. I ended up getting a B in calc 3, but I was given the option to pass fail with no penalty and Calc 3 was extracurricular, so I took a P instead. I'm in the summer semester, I'm taking linear algebra for math / cs majors. It's more abstract and pattern oriented than calc 3, so far no crazy geometries or shapes, but much more emphasis on proofs and correct mathematical notation. Everything is still online here, and I'm checking in from texas.
If you wanna work on remembering the stuff for the test, you could just make a ton of videos on all the topics that you're not sure you'll remember. That would be fun for us too. It could be your way of reading up on the material aside from the other youtube content. Always happy when you make another video.
Nice job! I finished up my junior year with this courseload (my school does not have +/-): E&M I - A Thermal Physics - A Laser Physics - A Advanced Physics Lab - A Computational Phys Lab - A

lmao not like grad school grades matter anyway
AA
Good job tho
Why don't they matter?
S M because you’re still graduating. as far as I know employers don’t check gpas
They grow up so fast❤️
I'm heading into my final semester as an undergraduate student (not for physics but I still absolutely love your videos) and I was so glad to find out that I made the Dean's list again this last Spring! 4.0 GPA and my first graduate-level course! Now I am just preparing for my GRE exams and getting statements of purposes as well as my resume ready when it comes time for applications in a few months.
OMG, I just started watching your VLOG to kill time before group meeting. When I learned you are in NMSU, it gave me a small world feeling.
My guy right here literally just show his grades while in my campus it's like an unwritten rule among peeps to NOT ASK others' grades :)
Thank you!
The "I know how to do it but I don't know what I am doing" sums up all the research I have done so far haha (it was a project on lightning physics)
Today was the last day of school for my high school! Done with my Apush and Ap chem tests. The way you talk about physics interests me a lot!
Keep up the work man I live in NM and plan on going to NMSU for either Engineering or Physics and I’m really exited to attend after watching your vids!!!
Thank you for the video! All of you friends are super awesome! Oh, moments with this video are sad.
It's so cool to find that you find parts challenging i myself think of as challenging as well.
For us, our species, it's great we are able to do what we've done :-)
Well done on the grades. I remember being terrified before my viva voce and all that was discussed was my research interests...lol
Would also love to hear about your experience as a grad student in New Mexico in general.
Teaching cal 3 took up a lot more time when it moved online, research really took a hit. Not working over the summer so I can focus on research, getting ready to defend in the fall.
Congrats on the last semester! Will you still be uploading vlogs even when you're Dr. Dotson and doing research? Happy for you regardless.
You bet!
JD Jackson's book still haunts me till now, lots of great but challenging problems.
Even after nearly 30 yrs Jackson still haunts me. Now, there's a good EM book by Andrew Zangwill. The level is in between Griffiths and Jackson.
Truly, thank you
Just saw this comment! Did you end up choosing physics as a major?
Second summer doing computational research, looking to publish by the end of this month! #3rd year good luck on your comprehensive !
Congratulations :) Those fantastic results you you should be very proud :)
"With everything being online this semester I knew what my grades were already "
Here I am with 4 weeks left and I literally don't know any grades in any class because either they havent graded any exams or havent applied the curve yet :). I could literally be failing a class and not know
Been watching for a long time and can't help but feel really proud of you! Hope you're staying safe :)
Damn Felix, your video quality has improved tremendously!
Please do a new setup review! Congrats on finishing classes!
Hey Andrew, I'm near the tail end of my finals week now. This is my second to last finals week as an undergrad! I just got grades back for my take home final for probability and the mean was crazy just like you were talking about in your E&M. The mean grade was a 97! One more final for real analysis left to submit..
Congratulations 🎊, wish me luck on my bachelor in pharmaceutical sciences.
you always make us proud Andrew :D nicely done and keep up the great work!
Omg I didn’t know you went to NMSU!! Thats so cool I go there too and just took physics and I struggled so much lmao 😭
Yk when a video is good bc it only has one disklike , who would ever dislike Andrew ?
I don’t know why I watch these videos. I’m a junior in high school who took AP Algebra Based Physics, did very averagely, plan on majoring in history, and understand none of the concepts he describes in these videos. I just watch them and you still manage to make them interesting.
I'm doing electrical engineering and here's what I got.(this is my second semester of freshmen year)
Calc 3 : B+
Physics2(EM) : A-
Physics2 lab : A+
Computer Logic Design : A+
Tech writing: A+
Im reading Griffiths intro to electrodynamics right now during summer break, I'm really liking it so far! Any one have any other suggestions on other good phyics books like on classical , stat mech , relatively ect. for someone at my level? Cause I dont know whats good and whats not. Thanks! Good luck and be well smart people!
I liked Marion and Thornton’s book for classical mechanics.
I wouldn't put a lot of effort into physics, just try to focus on probability for signals and random signals analysis and then of course theory of integral transforms
Finished High school and
Here I am waiting for my undergrad classes to start
Nice job! I finished up my junior year with this courseload (my school does not have +/-):
E&M I - A
Thermal Physics - A
Laser Physics - A
Advanced Physics Lab - A
Computational Phys Lab - A
Congrats on your success!!! I’m going into aerospace so I guess I’m finally gonna learn some of the stuff your learning :)
Just finished third year undergrad physics with astrophysics in the future, looking forward to our group observing project next year. This year’s exams were open book which carried me real hard i wouldn’t have passed otherwise lol quantum is hard
"Don't know what I'm doing but I know how to do it." Research is like that sometimes. Hope your Comps aren't postponed.
