    This video is about whether film or digital is better, yet no one so far has even stated their preference.

    Digital photography will never look like film because it is an electronic process not a chemical based one. My biggest complaint regarding digital photography is it makes DP's lazy. They can make an error and reshoot a shot. When using film you had to keep your skill level very high because most shots were keepers. I read an article by John Alonzo the Cinematographer talking about lighting a scene in the film Scarface. The scene in Frank Lopez's office with the black walls was a nail biting scene for him because he had to use his skill to guarantee a correct exposure. There were no reshoot, only one take shots. He was the man. That kind of skill level is gone due to digital photography.

    Skyfall was filmed entirely on digital. And I have to say, it looks spectacular... Then again, Roger Deakins is a genius in any format.

    This, to me, is a question of discipline, more specifically, discipline on set. Film forces you to be economical - it forces you to be strict with your ratios and get your film made efficiently. It forces you to rehearse and work more closely with actors to get the performance just right in a shorter space of time. It forces you to be strict with focus and aperture. Beyond that, it's a physical medium, that requires care and precision - it's not just 0s and 1s floating out in space.

    This was one of Cinefiles' best debates, in my opinion. The conversation in the above video is very intelligent and well-informed. I learned a lot just by listening. It is a worthy viewing for any film buff.

    As a current film student, here at Columbia College. We still have to learn film, but also digital. I find that it is a great experience to learn on film (which is by nature harder to master), and then move on to digital.
    This isn't first time something like this has occurred. Silent films gave way to color, which gave into TV, and so forth. As scary as it is, technology changes , and we all have to move along with it.

    Saturday night I went to see the original Die Hard in the theater. Before the film started they told us that Fox let them borrow their personal archive copy. It didn't have a scratch on it, looked like it was never played. It was beyond amazing.
    A year or so ago I went to see Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and it was so aged, scratched, and faded it almost ruined the film for me, even though it's one of my favorites.
    Glad I live in Rochester,NY where they preserve and show tons of these classics

    Great topic and discussion, guys. I had to chuckle on the studios absorbing the cost of 3D glasses. They make big bucks on the glasses (started back in the 50s) and I don't see them stopping now. They are greedy and will never lower prices no matter how cheap digital becomes. But one thing not mentioned is film grain and it's organic "feel" and look. Younger generations seem to hate it but if I'm watching an older film in HD I really like seeing a little grain so it feels more like a movie.

    Modern film is made of acetate, which does not burn. As far as storage goes, film supposedly has a life of 300 years when stored properly, which is already longer than any digital medium is expected to last. However film doesn't exist as far back as 300 years, so no one REALLY knows how long it can last. Stick it in a freezer and it is virtually frozen in time. Polyester prints are also extremely strong and even more resistant to deterioration than acetate. On the other hand, every hard drive that exists now will eventually fail.

    What you see in Europe because of DCP’s is that releases have become even bigger, making the first weekend even MORE important than they are. 35 was less mobile so you at at least had a week in a screening room. Now, if the 1st days aren’t good enough, you are moved to a smaller screening room on Monday. And instead of 4 showings a day, you get one. The blockbuster-mentality (read EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS!). Risks will be taken less.

    One of your best shows yet. Great discussion. Digital film looks way to real to be as convincing as the "real' movies. Public Enemies is a great example. While watching I kept wondering when will they bow for the audience 'cause it looked like a theater play.
    Movies will change and something of value will be lost. Some call it the "soul" of the film, I just call it impactfulness. The only impact from now on will be the CGI'd image itself, not the content, just like current blockbusters.

    Digital is great but I too am concerned about how much we're losing because they "don't make the cut" for restoration and conversion to a digital format. Example: Look up The Thief Who Came To Dinner, a movie I have on VHS, mainly for one of Henry Mancini's best scores (which was only just released to CD in 2009) but the movie has yet to be converted for digital or DVD re-release. The next time I play the tape will be to capture it into my computer, but the quality will suck...

    Has anyone seen the Ocean's films by Steven Soderbergh (Not sure I spelled that right)? On Blu Ray, I think they look fantastic. I usually prefer film over digital, but I am not sure what these movies were shot in. Does anyone know if the Oceans's films were shot in film or digital?

    Digital is Analog, it goes through an AD conversion. You could also do RAW and re scan the image to Film. In its principle its still all analog. Film gets re-scanned and made into digital vice versa. No one wins.

    its great that video is very affordable but what great things are we seeing now that its so affordable? Movies about robots, superheroes, and unscripted comedies that are pieced together in editing after doing 100 takes. Film forces the artist to be focus on the intent and to be creative to get the point across without an over reliance on post production and that is what separates the real artists from hack video guys.

    Most indie-horror films aren't seen by many people regardless if it's story or production is good or bad. I don't see how that will ever change.
    Anybody can make a movie now, therefore, more people are making movies. It's the law of diminishing returns.

    My local drive-in almost had to close up shop due to the switch to digital projection. Thankfully, Honda (the car company) stepped up and bought digital projectors for several drive-ins based upon number of votes received. My local drive-in won one of those projectors. There was NO way they could have afforded to get the new projector. Digital will kill a lot of smaller, mom and pop movie theaters and that's really unfortunate.

    I appreciate the visual/economic value of Digital, but I am Biased--I was a Projectionist for 13 years until Hollywood forced the Digital revolution on theatres. I miss the feel and construction work that 35mm brought to the game. Digital has a better image (until the hard drive/system hub freezes up) but I feel that 35/70mm STILL has a place in the industry. Hopefully, we will not let this medim die out the way of physical books. Just because it is shiny new doesn't make it the best! Thanx!

    Digital opens the world up to people who could never have dreamed of experimenting and filming on film, it is all about story telling. Computers and editing techniques, will open up a world of creative possibilties unheard of, i think you will start seeing people stretch the techniques of photoshop/after effects and like, and come up with very innovative looking films.

    • @lukasjbryant

      +tallaganda83 BUT should video be called film?

    • @tallaganda83
      @tallaganda83 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, maybe not i don't see anything wrong with continuing to pay homage to the past, film will die some day, it is just not environmentally or economically viable long term in my opinion, i still shoot film photography by the way, medium format, and love it too i love the look of it, storytelling is still the number one consideration in my opinion though.

    • @lukasjbryant
      @lukasjbryant 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tallaganda83 it's not paying homage. It's changing the industry. It's no longer the film industry it's the video industry. The industry will never be as good as it was with film.

    • @tallaganda83
      @tallaganda83 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't agree with that, I think that although you would never admit it, or maybe even realise it, nostalgia is playing its part in your views, but this wont be the case with future generations, and there will always be people who are intelligent and love good storytelling, plus high quality, so the boundaries will be pushed further and further in pursuit of perfection, the only real edge film has at the moment is in the highlights, and that is quickly changing as digital gets better and better. I hope people continue using film for as long as possible too, and I feel the same nostalgia, but I think at the end of the day it isn't digital that's killing "films" it is the internet, things like Netflix, and illegal downloads, so movies are having to be made cheaper to make profit, leading to more digital, I love movies as much as anyone alive, but the storytelling comes front and centre, and wether it be hand drawn animation, to digital 3d so long as that's still there I'm in.

    • @lukasjbryant
      @lukasjbryant 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tallaganda83 It is nostalgia! Not disagreeing with that. However, the image of motion picture is changing. The concept of being able to make a "film" is changing. The boundaries are being pushed and will continue to be pushed. I haven't disagreed with you there. However, where there is progress for video in pushing these boundaries, film is suffering and will die. Therefore, we can't conclude that this is progress for film. For video in the movie making industry it is absolute progress. But I'm just saying, as an artist, I want to have a choice. And if people are going to take away my freedom to choose because of "practical or economic" reasons, then where is the artistry in confinement? :)

  • @alkevinzmedia

    Actually Digital does fade and go away over time. Corruption and color fading occurs as the digital file sits on a silicon base plate thats essentially photosynthesized on to the disc. Its no more different than film.

      But it also is a great example of how liberating the freedom of digital can be. I also think it had a look that fit the movie just perfectly. The murky haze added this cool feeling of detachment and disorientation to it. The project wouldn't even exist if not done on digital. Same with the Dogma 95 movement.

    I prefer film over digital. But here's the thing, you guys seem to not know what you're talking about most of the time. You say "a lot of video isn't shot at 24p, it's shot at a different frame rate and then changed in post." That is simply not true. At all. Any narrative film is shot in 23.978p (unless it's The Hobbit). It's not changed in post. If you shoot at a high frame rate and then changed it to 24p in post, it would be slow motion. You're simply mistaken.

    Digital isn't a fad. There are too many high-profile directors who've taken to using digital. The assertion that it looks "better" or "worse" than film, especially with the technology today, is at best willful snobbery. A guy like Anthony Dod Mantle is an artist if ever there was one, and every bit as talented a cinematographer as one who shoots on 35mm. What's concerning, however, is the financial end of it. I've attended a few screening recently I've been very excited to see on the big screen, only to find DVDs or Blu-Ray projected. The idea of seeing a film print of anything is becoming a special event. And that IS sad. There are many films I'd kill to see in 70mm or 35mm and will probably never get the chance to now. It isn't surprising; the financial cost of digital distribution for studios is so much less. The decision to shoot digitally or on film should be a decision made by the filmmakers for artistic rather than financial reason. RUSH is a brilliant film. It was shot digitally. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is a brilliant film, shot on celluloid. But when I go and see a special screening of CASABLANCA or THE MALTESE FALCON, I just feel like the magic isn't there if it's projected digitally. And if it's a DVD, what the hell's the point? I could just stay home.
    Beyond all of this, there's the darker "because we can" and "because it was SUPPOSED to be that way" revisionism practiced by guys like Lucas, Cameron, and Hill that digital now allows them to do. And as the username obviously implies, I can't pretend I'm comfortable with that, and digital makes it easier than ever. I shot student films on digital. It's a great, inexpensive tool. And as with any tool, it's artistic validity is determined by what it's used for. But the two things should exist side-by-side, and that's looking less and less financially feasible. That's the main point of concern, at least for me.
