I'm 67 years old and haven't sewn a garment since 7th grade home ec class but your videos are so helpful and easy to follow, that you've inspired me. Our Joanne fabrics is going out of business, so I went and bought a pattern and material and I'm going to give it a whirl. Wish me luck!

Love your videos. You've inspired me to tackle my huge pile of "not just right" items and see what can be paired together for a new look. I like that you do not do a lot of social talking. You are mainly focused on getting the project completed to your satisfaction. Also like that you fast forward through machine sewing. We get how your doing it without having to watch in real/slow time. I watch a lot of refashion/upcycle videos. YOURS IS THE BEST CHANNEL!

I think the skirt looked very nice with the black top and boots! The top is adorable. I loved your comments about experimenting, learning and improving skills even if the final product isn’t something you are completely happy with. I wish more people saw life this way! The secret of why we create and make things. How we change and get better is the actual ‘product’ ❤️

I actually like the top better with the skirt than with your jeans. I think the peplum blends in and coordinates with it. I don't like peplums though so take that as you will. The skirt turned out cute. I like the idea of wearing it with a black top. The print mixing is great. Reminds me of a Gunne Sax dress I used to own.

I live in Taiwan. The heat in the summer causes elastic to stretch out in a couple of years so I have to keep changing it in all our elastic waste pants. So it's less trouble to change the sewed in elastic to casings. A lot of stitches to take out from factory made.

I love the top, but I would prefer a longer ruffle at the waist. The skirt is cute, and of course my twist is having the fabrics in opposite placement. The darker on the outer sides. It would have been great it there was more of the darker fabric, so more panels, but narrower. I feel that would make it flow together better. I'm amazed that the fabric patterns "match" up so well. Really cute remake. Thank you for all the little tricks and tips you continue to share. And for your fearlessness when approaching your project.

      Hi Catherine,
what if you would half all the parts of the skirt to distribut the darker fabric more evenly...
So two smaller stripes in front and back and the bigger print in between ?

The skirt would’ve been better with just the first print combined with plain black. And the top didn’t need the peplum. I really like the lines of the rest of the top. The sleeves and the elastic really work to define the shape. That was a cool experiment. Thanks for showing us, you really inspire. 💜

  • @retroredo9850

I like the top pretty much and like how you altered the grayish shirt. I think I would have made that with a different material for a sleeve, like black lace 3/4 ones or none. And maybe have made a tunic with the other two as they seem more matchable. I Becaue of my shape I either attach materials at 2" under the bust line for seam and raising arms up. Learned the hard way. If at waist I do about an inch above waist or materials cling to my too big of a butt. I never directly sew elastic as I have found for me different waist of material gather differently or hand differently so I always make elastic casings. Even when I attach material for tunic tops. I dont always do elastic. Often I attach a bit bigger, slightly A line then take in and reshape sides or once in awhile I will sew a piece of elasitc at the back only about 4 to 6 inches wide stretching to take in similar amount 2 darts would be in the back. Again about an inch above my waist. Anyway, you give great lessons to everyone. Ive been remaking thrift since age 10 and im 69 now. Im so glad its in style to do your own thing. We did some in the hippie era but some years I hid some that my clothes were thrift. I love men's wear materials too. Like the hounds tooth suits. Have a few saved that are damaged going to make purses.

I had a skirt of different prints similar years ago and loved it and wore it so much. The skirt would look better with softer top….t-shirt or soft button-up blouse in silky type material.

I don’t own a serger and would love to see a video or two as you up-cycle thrifted items on various ways that I could use to have nice ‘serge’ seams using my conventional machine. Not sure if I’m imagining something called a French seam but attempted creating a closed finished seam to finish my seam.

But with the top you made I think there would need to be horizontal layers. Just my thoughts. I don't even sew yet. I love the top! Your design skills are wonderful! Truthfully, I like the skirt and top together, I’ll tell you why: as you mentioned, the flounce really could have bern a bit longer, and when it’s worn with the skirt (which turned out cute too), the flounce length blends into the skirt and is less noticeably short than when the top is worn with the lighter colored jeans. Maybe a pair of black dress pants would have the same effect. 😍😍

@CatherineSews -- I'm a 1989 graduate. You are so youthful, I'd've sworn you did too.

Loved your new top, Catherine, including its little ruffle (you're still young. : ) I also think the skirt was very flattering and pretty when worn with your plain black sweater. THANK YOU for the video you made about "fast fashion"! (I had no idea! I wear my own clothes for years and years; but frequently am purchasing t's and pj's for my grandchildren -- and not always from "principled" companies, I now discover!) Okay -- sewing-upcycle question: I recently found three beautiful pairs of slacks at the thrift shop; they fit very smoothly at my waist, hips and legs; but the problem area is the droopy "seat"; I am not "flat" back there, but it seems like these pants were made for ladies significantly "cheekier" than I am. How to alter them?

Thank you for the video, I like the skirt but as a separate. It’s OK with the top but it was cuter on its own. The top is great, love those little elastic strips that square than neckline.

This is impressive! I think it has inspired me to make a ruched waist dress with those sleeves and a square neckline. I bought 2 yards of beautiful fabric to make a blouse, but the dang people at the fabric store gave me an extra 1.5 yards since it was the end of the bolt, so I feel compelled to make a dress instead!

Thanks for the nice comment! I think the ruched waist and sleeves of this top would be gorgeous on a dress made from one beautiful fabric. Good luck with it!

Very cute top. I like the concept of the skirt, but not sure if I like the finished product. I wonder if you used plain black on the o/s panels to give a slimming illusion? Another great makeover. Keep them coming.

I love the project! They look great together or as separate pieces. Well done!

I ordered the small elastic. I have a few men's t-shirts with long sleeves. I measured and if I cut off the cuffs I have length for a pretty ruffle at the wrist. I buy men's tshirts because they fit in the shoulders and over DD bust. But so baggy! If ruffle sleeves work, I am thinking about a v neckline.
    This is exciting!

@@CatherineSews ❤ V women are not included in women's sizes. Fat lady clothes look awful on me. I once had a peplum suit I loved, it gave me mock hips.

I love how it turned out. Another approach if you wanted a dress might have been to do an empire waist and just do the shirring under the bust with a more A line skirt attached. However with that said the two separate pieces does give you more flexibility and I like the peplum top

The skirt looks excellent with the black jumper. The top looks better without the peplsm but great job on both of them 👍
