Love this album, I also love that in a way even though he is telling the story of his friend, most of it mirrors his own life as if to say that could have been him if things were just a little different. J Cole's not my favorite artist but this is by far his best album. Especially when you listen to it again after knowing the whole story there's something about it that is deeply emotional, intimate and powerful in a way that is completely unique to who J Cole is as an artist. This album isn't perfect but it's crazy underrated and people don't respect him nearly enough for what he accomplished with this album especially with the last song.

Cole’s lyricism is great because it’s very simple but impactful at the same time. With Kendrick you have to work to unpack the layers of his messages but with Cole it’s a lot more easier to grasp and digestible. This not a knock to any of them (they’re my 2 favorites to listen to) but just an appreciation for coles lyricism that goes under the radar since it’s not complex like kendrick, or flashy and cool like JID

This album got quite a bit of hate when it came out for being "slow" and "boring", but in my opinion this is J. Cole's best ALBUM, and in retrospect I think people appreciate it more now. And I highlight the word ALBUM because his 2 mixtapes "The Warm Up" and "Friday Night Lights" are really his most phenomenal projects. They're basically albums. You definitely need to check those out as well.
And you should check out more Ari Lennox too since you liked her voice so much. She is J. Cole's artist and from my hometown of Washington D.C. Very good R&B singer.

4YEO (along with FHD, Friday Night Lights, Warm Up, and KOD) is the reason people consider Cole a GOAT.
You mentioned comparing him to JID and Kendrick but you gotta understand rap is not just about complex metaphors, crazy lyricism and insane flows. Although it’s obviously impressive, some of the greatest rappers (like Pac) music lives forever because of their ability to make the listener FEEL something. You cried at the end of this album. As much as I love Kendrick and JID and the “lyrical miracle” rappers, I have never once cried or even came close to crying to their music. It’s very impressive but it doesn’t make me FEEL anything the way Cole does.
Complex bars and intricate flows is not the only form of great writing.

Great reaction! I think this is one of the greatest albums of all time. The title track is an amazing song and it’s great that you’re making content for other people who might not dive into this type of music and give them thorough breakdowns of lines and your perspective.

For your next reaction, you should do either 1999 or 2000 by Joey Badass. Joey was 17 when he released 1999 and it’s regarded as one of the best debuts ever, 2000 is a very strong album as well, more of a matured sound to it

Although Forest Hills Drive is one of my fav albums and I go back to it way more than 4youreyez, I think this one is my personal fav of his, it’s pretty special and definitely more of a conceptual one in coles catalog.

Response to timestamp 9:43. In the modern/urban culture. When your loved ones die it is a type of custom to get their picture on a shirt so you can wear it around. This is in a sense the highest designer you can wear in that moment. Especially at like the funeral for said person.
I've only done this for my peers that. Some people do this for their elder relatives as well. To each their own.

Upon release of the album my 1st listen was just a feeling of being underwhelmed. Coming after my absolute favorite in 'forest hills drive'. And a coworker who I introduce to Cole listened to it and we talked about it and he loved it...then he started explaining why he did and I didn't was simple he 'was a father'.but going back to it now and putting myself in a perspective of having a child and the possible emotions one could feel along with my experiences without a father...the last track '4 your eyez only' just broke me..finally understanding this album it truly is an underappreciated album from his catalog

Thank you for doing this album, it’s one of my all time favorites. It’s cool to watch Cole’s progression through his career going from the materialistic young dude going for the glitz and glam to realizing none of that stuff matters. Some of his albums people aren’t a fan of and that’s fine, I don’t think he makes music to be hits. I feel like he’s elevated his purpose to being a real human, relaying lessons and perspectives that people need to hear.
On a separate note, thank you for your in depth reviews. I like how long and thoughtful you are, and it’s cool to see you work through your thought process on your journey through an album. Keep up the great work, much love.
