For landscape photography, not considering the weight and mounted on a tripod, the Oly 40-150 f2.8 is considered sharper up to 150mm. Throw on the 1.5 tc and you now have F4 from 150-200mm. Is there any other in the field recommendation you could help me make the comparison to before pulling the trigger? I shoot a G9 and do some video work but more along the lines of 85-15% the latter being video. $500 is quite the difference in pricing so I'm wanting to invest in the smartest lens for my setup! Thank you in advance for your thoughts!
The Olympus has a true manual focus clutch, which the 50-200mm doesn't. I honestly don't like that manual focus system for video work in the 50-200. I still think that it has the edge when it comes to photography though, because the reach is really nice to have and the lower weight is great too.
Great video. Thanks. With the new firmware the “focus by wire” now can be set to linear and set the angle required to go from minimum to max. Really works perfect to me.
The Olympus must be a very versatile lens for traveling and daylight shooting. I also really like the 42.5. I think I have finally found my (almost) perfect set of lenses for most photo and video work. Will do another video on that very soon!
I have the "Olympus 50-200mm SWD f2.8-3.5" with MMF3 and a 2*teleconverter. It takes impressive pictures, but autofocus is so slow, that I usually use manuel focus and that's why I'm looking at this lens.
I think it'd be best to try it out if you can. Depends on your use case really, although I never felt like autofocus was slow with any native lens on a Panasonic body. It's just that the hit rate can vary drastically, especially on those contrast focus based autofocus systems. Newer cameras like the G9 II might be better in that regard though.
My favourite part was the different shots at different focal lengths. But there is a lot of details in the rest of the shots as well. Wonderful review and great pictures 👏
I only tested the 2.0 TC but since the 1.4 TC is less overall magnification it should of course perform a lot better. This is the case because it will magnify lens imperfections a lot less with the 1.4 TC, which should lead to sharper images with less chromatic aberrations and other "optical" problems.
Great review, looks like you can get some beautiful results with this lens. The rendering of all the Leica f/2.8 - 4 models seems to be particularly pleasant. Unfortunately it's just so expensive :-\ Costlier than the Olympus 40-150 f/2.8 and about double the price of the Fujifilm equivalent; their 70-300mm. I really wish Panasonic had priced the 50-200 under £1000. Even the teleconverters are signficantly more expensive than the competition. I just got the Olympus 75-300mm so I can start playing around with long telephoto on Micro Four Thirds. Of course it's going to give nowhere near the results of the Panasonic you've reviewed, but it's a lot better for my wallet. Longest lens I've had before was a 400mm (FF equivalent) so it will be good to learn how to get the most from this longer reach before considering a higher end lens. Disappointing to hear that Pana have discontinued the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters?! Makes the 50-200 even more of a tough sell from a value perspective, as it will take away that option to make the lens more versatile, and push up the prices of the teleconverters even more in the short term. By the time I've saved enough to buy the 50-200 I imagine the teleconverters won't be available as new items anymore.
Wow, I didn't know they just discontinued their teleconverters. Really wondering why... perhaps the MFT market is shrinking in that specific area? Either way, you can get some really nice images with this lens and TC, but I think you'll be happy with the 75-300mm by Olympus as well as you won't need any TC for extended reach, which is definitely nice. I agree that the 50-200 is quite expensive and if it's just a hobby, you either need to really love what you're doing or be rich af. I just love testing all that new shiny gear... but my wallet is crying. Thanks for your great comment, I appreciated reading it. Cheers!
I am looking to go with Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO for my g9 instead this laica 50-200, it has manual clutch ring like 10-25 laica lense. it would be quite interesting to have your opinion between those two lenses. Regards, Андрій.
A manual focus clutch is definitely better than the 50-200's fly-by-wire focusing system. I also like the fact that it's a constant f/2.8. I'm sure the 40-150 f/2.8 is a great lens, but it is too heavy for my taste. That's why I went with the 50-200 + 2X TC, which is still less in weight and offers longer focal length coverage. It absolutely depends on your personal needs though. I am personally a huge fan of the MFT system because of the small size and weight.
@@ValentinKossenko What i'd really like to see is a comparison of image stabilization between the 40-150mm and this 50-200 on the GH5. I think if the stabilization is way better on the Panasonic then the panasonic is a no brainer. However if the stabilization is comprable then the 40-150mm with teleconverter is the best and most versatile option assuming you don't mind the extra weight of the olympus. To me at the end of the day theyre both tele zoom lenses and are both big so its not that much of an issue.
I also liked the pictures at the various focal lengths as you "zoomed in" one step at a time...but...it was too fast. While it would have made the overall video longer, I would have appreciated that each focal length was shown 2-3 x longer in terms of time, for me as it is now I was just processing one image in my mind and the film had already jumped two focal lengths 😕 so I wasn't keeping up.
Hi miljomupp, thanks for your feedback! While editing this video, I was actually asking myself whether this was too fast or not but ultimately decided to do it like this, because I thought you could always just pause and keep going when you're finished. This way you guys get a video that is as short as possible but can still watch every single frame of the focal length comparison. I hope that makes sense!
Sorry for the late reply. If I find the time for it, I will definitely add them to my website. Still figuring out, which way would be best to present them though.

I wouldn't say I goes fast from 2.8 to 4. 3.3 at 70mm, 3.5 at about 85mm and 4 at more than 150mm is not that bad. Much better than Sony ZV-1, significantly better than RX10 IV and slighlty better that Leica 12-60mm, although you would have to draw a curve of apeture vs relative AoV and compare filed under the curve which, I admit, would be a intellectual overkill.
@@ValentinKossenko Of course it is bad enough when you want to use it as dedicated video lens. It is essentially f/4 in that case, as videographer really needs that constant apeture.
You can just set it to F4 and it behaves very well with no flickering or light changes! That’s usually how I use it and the other 2.8-4 lenses
That's clever!
I've been thinking of getting this lens for some time now.
But i'm holding out just to see what we get with Pana's GH6 first.
I can understand that and really hope the GH6 will exceed our expectations.
