Weird question, but does any other TJ’s use the weird color-coded checkout? The 14th St, Manhattan location is like a DMV at checkout and it gives colorblind people a mild panic attack.

TJ's is okay; there's only one thing I go there for specifically (a certain variety of dried cherries I can't find anywhere else), and I get a few bags that last me a few months. If I need milk or something while I'm there I'll get it but most of my grocery shopping is at Wegmans (which apparently has a bit of a cult following of its own...I go there mostly because it's the easiest option on my way home from work).

Hi Matteo, I’m a current Trader Joe’s employee, so when I saw your video I was both excited and nervous for your reaction. I can definitely agree that the chaotic energy of the crowds is a bit overwhelming, especially for us employees. Although weekday mornings it tends to be a bit more quiet. It seems on your trip you weren’t too sure of what to buy, since it was your first trip. Since you love and cook Italian cuisine, I’d love to know your opinions on our Italian dishes (maybe a taste test video?), or see you make another delicious Italian meal with our products to get yourself acquainted with our stuff more. It was very entertaining to watch your video, and hilarious that you ended it with a trip to the Container store. Looking forward to your next video! - Justin (from store #068)
Trader Jose's pricing is the best of any grocery store. Things they do really well: Their Alkaline Water is the best! I never buy anything else (although pricy but less expensive than Smart Water). Their basil plants are full and beautiful, I use them for all of my Italian cooking. Their cheese is priced well and have a better variety than the grocery store. At Christmas time, their baked lemon ricotta cheese wedge is heavenly. Their Almond butter Pretzel nuggets are really good as well (even their peanut butter pretzel nuggets are great and less expensive than the grocery store. I'm not sure why you have lines to get in, maybe you don't have that many stores but in California they are pretty much everywhere. Best time to go is when they open. They don't have warehouses, food is brought directly to their stores so nothing sits around like mainstream grocery stores. That being said, they do run out of popular items frequently. Also, their employees taste test their products.
The grainy texture in cheese sauce is caused by high heat, it causes the proteins in the cheese to become denatured, citrus can help fix it, it does something to stop the cheese from clumping.
I’m surprised that TJ’s wasn’t twice as busy. Love the Chelsea store but it can go from empty to crazy packed in a snap. And it’s definitely way cheaper than the standard grocery store and their frozen foods have no business being as good as it is 😂
Matteo, the nice thing about Trade Joe's is that they do national pricing. So you don't more in NYC than someone in a rural square state. But for me it's their frozen food section. Their frozen latkes and lava cakes are very good. Not the best, but very good for a no cook experience. Their orange chicken, friend rice, and scallion pancake (green onion) are amazing too.
I will say I'm absolutely obsessed with the Trader Joe's tea and coffee selections (and I really like to try out the different seasonal flavors-that Winter Blend Tea is AMAZING and I always stock up on it)the staff is pretty helpful and friendly! and I love their selections of dried fruits/nuts/trail mix and granola etc. But generally speaking- I can't stand the other shoppers. I've been to TJ's in 6 different states and it's always the same- last week at my local one a woman blocked off the entire pantry/cereal aisle with her cart...and everyone just assumed "Oh that's normal", AND SHE DIDN'T EVEN GET ANYTHING FROM THAT AISLE!!! She was just browsing! UUUUUGGGGGHHH
My town got a TJ's a few years ago (before that I knew of two locations, neither of which I was willing to drive to, so I'd been there exactly once just because I was nearby so I decided to check it out; I didn't get the hype and still don't) and I really only go there because it's the only place that has the kind of dried cherries that I like. (Target used to but when they rebranded all their store brand stuff a while back they got rid of that variety.) I'll usually wander over to the tea section to see if they have anything that looks good (my friend gave me a Christmas/winter flavor from there one year but I haven't seen it since). I currently have so much tea (not from TJ) I'm not allowed to buy more until I use it up. I probably won't be buying tea until at least next year. But I still look. ☕
I love how much he judged Trader Joe’s without actually trying any of the food. I really want to see Matteo hit Whole Foods and if there are any Sharper Image or Brookstone stores still around, you know what you need to do, Matteo!
There are two good things about Trader Joe's. One is that they have affordable versions of "luxury" products. Schloss Bieber champagne at $6.99 (depending on state taxes) is as good as a $20 bottle anywhere else. Aside from "Two Buck Chuck," the infamous store brand, all of their cheap wines are pleasantly drinkable. Obviously, if you want authentic Caccio Pepe, you have to make it fresh, but their frozen meals are literally ten times better than frozen food anywhere else, and *cheaper*! I get those various things in bags and just make half of it and put the rest back in the freezer, but people outside of Manhattan have freezers larger than mail boxes. Same with coffee. TJ's coffee is excellent and cheaper. (I think that concentrate is supposed to be diluted, not main lined straight up. LOL!) The line around the building is totally a Manhattan thing. Other than during the pandemic, when they only allowed like 20 people in the store at a time, I've never stood in line to go to Trader Joe's. While waiting on the sidewalk was a pain, I admired them caring that much about their customers and employees.
@@beatm6948 That was one of my favorites, until the price went so high. I make it myself now. I make enough sauce for several servings and keep it in a bottle in the fridge. I do usually fry up the chicken fresh.

here's the thing about tj's. they always have ALL registers open! and they're so nice and friendly like i've never met a rude employee. i do not shop for my normal groceries there. it's for fun things that you can't get anywhere else.
Trader Joe's needs to open earlier or something because as a disabled person it's impossible to shop there. So many people, it's always busy, and people constantly pushing you. It's like it's perpetually Black Friday when I'm trying to buy my weekly groceries.
i swear before the pandemic they had longer hours. i went the other day and i think it's 9-9 now when before i swear they did also have an 'open 1 hour early for eldery and disabled' or maybe that was just some stores but it would be nice sometimes. i live with my aunt who is disabled and needs the scooters and when one isn't available we just can't shop. or i have to go in alone without her as she's still in the car and play back and forth text tag with 'is this what you wanted' pics
Trader Joe’s STRESSES ME OUT. Too small, everyone running into you and my local one always has terrible accidents in the parking lot. FLIPPED over car in the entrance. Got rear ended last year trying to leave. We have to park a parking lot over to feel somewhat safe 😂😂😂

New Yorkers love TJs because not only is their stuff pretty decent, it’s also actually affordable. When I lived in NYC I used to only shop there or at Target, and then there were the occasional Dollar Tree hauls 😂
It's like that at every TJ's. I live in Atlanta and some of the rudest shoppers' flock to TJ's. Right before Xmas I was waiting patiently to grab a cart as two rather stocky women got theirs and moved along. Some silver bobbed older lady pushed past me to grab a cart and I said rather loudly, "You are not that important". She turned, said "hmptf" and off she went. She is not alone in that attitude. It's a 'trendy' thing to like Tj's now. God help us.
As a resident & native of the birthplace of Trader Joe's, both Pasadena and Los Angeles, I thank you and love this, hysterically. As your fellow customers looks like a mirror image of customers here, well yeah, with a handful more of Black-Americans as both employees and customers. Plus here, especially now, all post-pandemic -nobody, absolutely no one films anything here inside of flippin' Trader Joe's, so this is so freaking hilarious to me , high5 on filming a totally great idea, I simply can't stop giggling at you walking all around the store & filming at Trader's slaying everything you serve-up!. Also fyi, even at one of our West Hollywood Trader Joe's, a huge store location and was popular all-around the greater Hollywood area at one time, there was (maybe still is) a hugely popular gay porn star, who has worked there for a very long! Thanks again for this relief in comedic genius! #carryon
I know I don't have a life, but that man dropping the leash just from the dog shaking it's head at 10:30, followed by the dog stopping dead in it's tracks like "get your shit together!" really got me 😂

Trader Joe's is one of a few places where I automatically glaze over the minute I walk in the door. Can't help it; can't control it. I exit the store 20 minutes later empty handed and unable to remember what happened.
Thank you Matteo for doing this! I've never understood the hype around Trader Joe's and the shoppers at the location here are a combination of extremely rude and nervous. Everyone is always on edge for some reason and will be happy to hit you with their cart or leave things unattended to wander off somewhere else. The workers are very sweet though, they don't deserve to put up with that.
Almost all the products at TJ's are the same items available at Aldi (just using a different label) and yet, people who are diehard TJ shoppers wouldn't be caught dead at an Aldi. I find that hilarious.
The lines in NYC are crazy because there are only like 2 in all of manhattan serving the millions of people in 4 of the 5 boroughs. I used to travel from the Bronx to the 14th street location (via 5 train) because the Trader Joe’s wine shop was next door. People in Queens can easily go to the Long Island stores. But the thing Trader Joe’s is the price and a consistent level of quality and variety.
He reminds me of my aunt, I felt like I was walking through the stores with her giving commentary on the store products and the people shopping there - it was awesome.
I don't see those see-through laundry detergent bottles too much in Canada where I'm at. It really never occurred to me that I might be paying more for it just because it came in a container that you couldn't see through. And now that I've gotten used to it I don't think I can revert to using it with see-through containers. Damn, those marketing maniacs got me again.
Trader Joe’s makes their money selling mostly pre-made food and condiments. It’s not a necessarily a store for people who like/know how to cook. There’s a really interesting history of it in a book called “The Secret Life of Groceries”
What's funny about this is that this location looks like the biggest I've ever seen. All locations in San Diego are tiny with zero parking. Love Matteo, he's the best!

TJ’s is the only store I have ever seen a perfectly abled person steal a disabled parking spot. Some entitled lady in a Mercedes no less 🙄.
#carryon
That green dragon hot sauce you passed up is actually the bomb!
Not the mom in SIXTH SENSE lmao You mean, and I'll forgive you for this, Toni Collette
Right??? What gay dismissively refers to la Collette as 'the mom in Sixth Sense'?? For shame!!!
“Since when do ribs have corn..oh wait…” I love the realization 😂😂😂 4:36
I know I don't have a life, but that man dropping the leash just from the dog shaking it's head at 10:30, followed by the dog stopping dead in it's tracks like "get your shit together!" really got me 😂
Matteo panicking and escaping trader joes to mindlessly wander around The Container Store with glee.....
I think we understand why Matteo stays so skinny =P
Advice, Heartache and Hairplugs, and all this extra content, you spoil us, sir!
I just watched Upgraded and was so excited to see you! what a great role - congrats, Matteo!
The giggling/laughter behind the camera is too funny 😂
The Trader Joe's on 6th Ave has no order Frozen pizza next to strawberries next to vegan bon bons
And they are always moving the Veggie Bird's Nests....How dare they! hehe
9:42 - those little rolly board things were the best. If you walked into gym class and those things were out, you just *knew* somebody was going home with a messed up finger because they rolled over it 😆😆
Only if we could get Matteo to work at Walmart! But what was funny is that in the early part in Trader Joe’s. Matteo started to sound like Nick! 🤣
It’s the single person’s grocery run. Pop in for snacks, dinner and wine… Done for the week.
Also… “OreE-gone” hah😂
Trader Joe's is one of a few places where I automatically glaze over the minute I walk in the door. Can't help it; can't control it. I exit the store 20 minutes later empty handed and unable to remember what happened.
The lines at that location can snake around the entire perimeter of the store!
This was gigantic treat. A million hosannas for seeing him pop his Trader Joe's cherry in a PUFFY COAT!
Matteo should do some vids where he just reviews his favorite stores or convenience foods. Who agrees? 😀
You are making me laugh out loud in a middle seat on a flight to Florida 😅
Trader Joe’s is probably my favorite place on the entire planet.
….😂”prepping for an anxiety attack”….😂😂😂😂 you GOT Trader Joe’s! Yeeeaas!
I feel like Nick would have had a stroke in there on this day. 😊❤
😂😂😂 Mateo being a bitchy Queen in Trader Joe’s. Yes PLEASE! ❤❤
The Marge Simpson voice was spot_on.
The concentrated coffee bit is so true. It’s like how wired are we all trying to get 😂
Almost all the products at TJ's are the same items available at Aldi (just using a different label) and yet, people who are diehard TJ shoppers wouldn't be caught dead at an Aldi.
🤣🤣🤣 they're not frail dears, I'm dead!🤣🤣🤣
That old lady is giving you the stink eye😂😂
He reminds me of my aunt, I felt like I was walking through the stores with her giving commentary on the store products and the people shopping there - it was awesome.
Matteo: I hate this place, walks in, I'm going to want everything in here. Same!
Matteo: “hey you kids, get off my lawn”. This is what gay PMS sounds like. I know from personal experience.
Ooo caught this early. That's fun!
I love how Matteo winces at certain uncommon Italian items that don't seem authentic, but then has nothing to say about macaroni cheese!
I think there is plastic fruit that was 40 bucks in that Michael's bag. *Wink. ❤
Plus some of those containers are only half full.
I love the Container Store rant at the end haha.
Those videos are mine ultimate guide to NYC.
Trader Joe’s makes their money selling mostly pre-made food and condiments. It’s not a necessarily a store for people who like/know how to cook. There’s a really interesting history of it in a book called “The Secret Life of Groceries”
"Celebrities Are Just Like Us!"
"I think it's fucked up when your dog treats look like a cat" 😂😂😂
What's funny about this is that this location looks like the biggest I've ever seen. All locations in San Diego are tiny with zero parking. Love Matteo, he's the best!
Absolutely adore your soul to the core❣️
Half a Trader Joe’s rant and half a Container Store rant. The sheer value we’re getting 😅
I would pay A LOT for a tour of NYC according to Matteo. Just take me to places you want to bitch about and Ill walk away thinking I just saw everything there is to see worth seeing in NYC
