Because they are used to the BS of today where kid shows are supposed to be stvpid and tame in the themes they want to cover . But just 2 decades ago "kids" shows were very mature and showed heavy concepts and jokes. Kid shows being deep is not an anomaly , but in current America it is

All of these felt aimed at adults more than children . There was more room for creative freedom so it makes sense... nowadays every cartoon needs to be CalArts and the mental equivalent of a meme compilation

Spoiler: Zuko's mom killed Azulon as a deal with Ozai. She agreed to kill him and never return in exchange for Ozai letting Zuko live. I learned later from another channel that Ozai was going to use his Agni Kai with Zuko as a loophole in the agreement to kill him. All it would take is one swing from Zuko, but because he refused to fight, Ozai could only scar and banish him.
