      @Arkayjiya 7 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      Yes this isn't the first time, it's actually made in contrast with the first time. With the girl, he doesn't want to admit the wrongs he's been complicit of so he run away and steal the horse for "the greater good", in this one though, he takes responsibility in front of everyone, accept that they won't forgive him which is their right but doesn't run away. The fact that this is the second time he's been confronted to it is actually part of his character growth.

      Living in poverty has also helped him realized that there is more to life than acquiring wealth and power in becoming Fire Lord. Zuko treads a walk of life that is diametrically opposed to the one his forefathers had laid out for him, and that aids his escape from his Fire Nation indoctrination.

    I don't think the doll was sexist. I think Iroh was trying to push her to find her softer side. She's already mean enough without a knife. Zuko could use a bit more backbone and perseverance and self confidence so he got that gift.

    • @Kaldurahm1
      @Kaldurahm1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +429

      Iroh isn't the kind of character to miss her nature and a chance to give her advice. He's had an opportunity to see them both and their particular failings. If he wanted to give Azula a nice gift that she'd like, he'd never give her a doll. Everyone who's ever met Azula would know she wouldn't like a girly girl doll. She'd want the knife. So I'd have to think that it had to be on purpose.

      I thought so as well, seeing as they kinda foreshadowed/hinted at it in the episode with Zuko's mom talking about the turtle ducks. Threaten their babies and you get bitten, followed by Azulon threatening Ozai's children and then "suddenly" passing away.

    (This is not a spoiler) everything that happens in this episode explains it all Ozai wanted to be Fire Lord and after Iroh lost his son Ozai asked Azulon to revoke Iroh's Birth right cause he didn't have an heir. Azulon was angry about that and said Ozai's punishment should fit the crime he must feel the pain of losing a first born son by sacrificing your own Azula told Zuko this then Ursa said to Azula its time for a talk that's when she found out that Azulon ordered Ozai to kill Zuko. Later we see Ursa wake Zuko up and say my love listen to me everything iv'e done iv'e done to protect you then she leaves and we find out Fire Lord Azulon has passed away. It's heavily implied that Ursa killed Azulon to save Zuko's life. It's all in this episode it's not a spoiler.

    This show does do a decent job of showing the gray side on all of the nation's. We see the earth kingdom and it's soldiers are not all good and abuse their power and later see the capital and how their society works, and the water tribe with it's sexism and backwards traditions (which later lead to Unalaq), even the air nomads with their elders are shown to be stubborn on their beliefs and tried to put to much pressure on a kid who wasn't ready for the job that they rushed (Aang wasn't supposed to find out till he was 16 like everyone other avatar). And later we see the fire nation despite what it has done is a bit of a progressive society by having women in the ranks and having no problem with a female firelord. And the people themselves seem content as fire nation citizens (minus that one village with the polluted river).of course this doesn't justify what the fire nation has done and the citizens are subject to firelord propaganda, but I still like that the show shows that every side has its good side and bad side and the avatar is needed to bring balance. It's not just evil empire vs good guys.

      This is exactly what makes ATLA an animated series like no other. It IS a kid show AND it's for adults too. Both a kid and an adult may watch the same thing, but they will perceive it differently. My favorite Zuko-centric episode, by far.
    It's a roller coaster of emotions and just so heartbreaking. We often don't realize just how much deep seed-rooted hatred or disgust people have against the Fire Nation. It's 100 years coming. All of those people in that town grew up knowing about the Fire Nation's tirade and not to mention, they took that little kid's brother Sensu.
    Yes, there are good people in the Fire Nation and even bad people out of it. But as a whole, the Fire Nation are seen as an enemy.

      Exactly. And I think Zuko needed tonsee this side of life with his own eyes, not only being exiled from his own home, but also being rejected by other people, because of what his country has wrought on others. 100 years of war and suffering don't go away just because of a few good deeds. People don't forget that easy.

    Nahid is 100% right. Most people don't want to accept that some people are just born messed up, and there's no abuse or anything in their backgrounds that pushed them to it. It's too difficult for many to accept because it feels like nothing is really sacred, but sometimes there's just no helping people.

    • @michaelhenry3234

      That's not really true for Azula. There's plenty of arguments out there pointing out why she's batshit crazy and how her upbringing fucked her up. So I won't argue it here.
      The arguments don't excuse her actions, they just offer insight into her character. Unless you're a sociopath, or are afflicted by some other social disorder, you aren't born bad.

    • @politure
      @politure 6 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      +Michael Henry I see what you're saying, but personally I think that Azula had her fair share of certain sociopathic tendencies from an early age (judging by the flashbacks). I'm sure her upbringing had a big influence too but it seemed more like half-half y'know.

    • @michaelhenry3234
      @michaelhenry3234 6 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      +Lint I don't think that she born a sociopath, nor do I think she became one. I agree that she has major sociopathic tendencies, but deep down I don't think she is.
      Her arc in season 3 is what confirms it for me, more specifically the scene with the mirror. It's hard to tell for certain, but I believe Azula made up her mind that her mother didn't love her at a young age, and convinced herself that she didn't care. That's a pretty sociopathic thing to do. But when she's talking to herself/the manifestation of her mom, she cries when told that her mother loves her. That's sort of not sociopathic.
      It's a complicated mess of a situation and I'm no psychiatrist, so I'm not about to psychoanalyze her, but whatever it is that's wrong with her certainly isn't something she was born with. It's something that grew and festered within her after years of being raised by a monster and believing her mother hated her. Her story to me is a tragedy. I don't excuse her actions, but you have to remember that she's only 14. The real villain is Ozai. He's the one who fucked her up in the head. Even if she was born a sociopath, it's a mental disorder. Just like Anorexia, OCD, Schizophrenia, and others, it can be treated. With the proper help she could've had a normal life.

    • @alexschwarz4749
      @alexschwarz4749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I guess some people can be born messed up. Just remember that being born "messed up" is not the same as evil. When you're born a psychopath then there's actually some physical difference in your brain, hence you experience/feel some things different. This is something that should be addressed by additional help and could lead to pretty messed up adults when not treated (Probably what happened to Azula + complex upbringing problems + etc.)
      For an example, studies found that in many (not all) cases of people imprisoned for serious bodily injury there were areas in their brain that showed differences to the general demographic, thus making those people unable to relate to the consequences/pain that their actions caused for the people they hurt. They felt indifferent about it and didn't understand why it was so bad. Those cases exist and make it hard to simply categorize people into goodies and badies ^^

    • @michaelhenry3234
      @michaelhenry3234 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      +Alexander Schwarz It's also worth to note that just because you're born "messed up" doesn't mean you can't get treatment. Azula either developed sociopathic tendencies, or she was born with it. But with both of those cases, good parenting could have resulted in a far better outcome.
      And she exhibits far more sociopathic tendencies than psychopathic, so I'd call her a sociopath.

    I can sympathize a bit with Azula in terms of her competitiveness and spite toward Zuko. Imagine being naturally gifted and having a deep love toward your country (in Azula's eyes, because of how she was raised, that means supporting the war and doing everything you can to conquer other nations) and have none of that matter because your older, not as gifted, outspoken and disrespectful (his speaking out in Ozai's war room) brother is going to inherit it all. Not only that, but Azula obviously loves war and fighting, so imagine not being taken your love for combat seriously by your uncle, who gives you a useless doll instead of a cool dagger, and your own mother, who thinks you're twisted for loving fighting so much. No wonder she gravitated toward Ozai, who was the only one who seemed to understand her.

    The story goes that Azulon did order Ozai to murder Zuko and know how it feels to lose a firstborn son. But Ursa pleads with Ozai to spare him and raise him as a son, and in turn she would brew a poison to give to Ozai so that he could murder Azulon late at night and when no one else was around so that Ozai could claim that his fathers last words were to make him the firelord instead of Iroh.
    And the reason Ursa leaves is because Ozai wouldn't be able to look at her and he was afraid they would be caught.
    That's what the official wiki says anyway.

      Nop ozai wanted to kill zuko cause he thought that zuko wasn't his biological son, and he thought that zuko was the son of ikem ursas previous bf from the village. So ursa in order to protect zuko from ozai, she made a deal with him. The deal was that she would help him become the next fire lord, she was an expert at herbs and that kind of stuff, so she made a poison that it's undetected when it's inside the body to kill azulon and give the throne to ozai. Ozai agreed and he let zuko live, but he banished Ursa from capital city, cause he couldn't trust her with the poison. He thought that she might use it on him someday so he didn't take that chance.

    Zuko's mother used to live in a simple village along with her boyfriend. Then the Fire Lord Azulon, upon finding the location, decided to marry her to his son, prince Ozai. This is because he found out that she was avatar Roku's daughter, and wanted to strengthen the royal bloodline.
    It seemed like Roku tried to hide her for that very reason. She couldn't refuse. Fast forward several years, she kept sending secret letters to her boyfriend in the village. She suspected that the letters were being intercepted, so she wrote a lie in one of these letters implying that Zuko is actually the son of her and the boyfriend, rather than Ozai's.
    As suspected, Ozai was indeed intercepting the letters; he was furious with that lie (he knew that it was a lie because he had spied on her for several months before meeting her) and confronted her. He decided that as punishment, he would indeed treat Zuko as if he wasn't his own son. Years later, when Azulon commands Ozai to kill his firstborn to have a taste of Iroh's loss during the war, Ozai accepted immediately.
    Zuko's mother stopped him and offered him a deal: she would make a poison that Ozai could use to kill Azulon and take the throne, in exchange for sparing Zuko. He accepted, but at the condition that she would leave the palace because he feared her ability to make such deadly poison. Zuko's mother went back to the village where she found her boyfriend again. They met a spirit with the ability to change someone's face and memories, and she decided to get a new face and erase her memories (so she forgot about Zuko, Ozai, Azula, Roku, etc) and lived happily. After the events of The Last Airbender, Zuko asks for Aang's help to find her. Azula also helps. They find her and restore her memories. She stays at the village.

    *Now that I've come back to this episode, I've realized that this show was the epitomy of storytelling. The flashbacks and narrations in this story are extremely well-handeled, just like in this episode. Some other great examples:*
    👉 *The Storm, in which Aang's and Zuko's backstories were told simultaneously with their inner turmoils unvieled;*
    👉 *The Winter Solstice P2, in which Roku told how the war started and it was good because it was a brief chuck of info really well-executed;*
    👉 *The Tales of Ba Sing Se. I don't think anyone would have doubts;*
    👉 *Appa's Lost Day: absolute pinnacle of storytelling;*
    👉 *The Avatar and The Firelord, which helps us delve deeper into the lore and it's kinda an amazing callback to the epi, The Storm;*
    👉 *The Avatar Day in which we got to know about Kyoshi in a quite unique and original way;*
    👉 *The Southern Raiders which constantly jumps between two linear timelines: one of Katara nd her revenge while the second about her mother, constantly buliding to the climax;*
    👉 *The Ember Island Players re-calling and re-caping the whole series in the most exciting way possible.*

    This episode elevated the series to Shakespearean levels. Shades of Hamlet and MacBeth laced right into the subtext. :')
    EDIT: To Micky,
    overcoming your capacity for evil through great effort is a higher
    moral virtue than someone who is just born good and is incapable of
    cruelty. In the latter, you are weak and are absolutely a victim to anyone who is
    capable of cruelty, there is no virtue in that. But in the former, you have evil and strife within you, but you've tempered your aggression, which is what true virtue is (Batman and Zuko are both
    like this)
    And to Rana,
    It'd be an oversimplification to say that Iroh giving Azula the doll is sexist. It makes more sense that Iroh understands that Zuko needs to grow and become stronger (hence the daggers inscription), and that he got the doll for Azula to bring her back to earth because of the fact that she is so out of control, as evident in the scene when she openly talks about her hopes of someone *assassinating Firelord Azulon.*

    4:15 Nahid might be onto something. One of the first visions the creators had for the show was one where Aang had been frozen for much longer than a hundred years. I don't remember exactly how long, but a thousand or ten thousand years. In this version Aang's culture had been much more advanced. For example Momo was supposed to be a robot. They obviously changed their minds about all of this eventually.
    But maybe in that universe there was a big nuclear war which transformed the animals into these crossbreeds and even though they scrapped the rest in the making of this series, they kept the animals?

    Two things: Zuko Alone is a great episode, and about the racism, the entire world has been fighting the fire nation for a hundred years, and this village, has clearly been the brunt of many attacks. Yes, the villagers probably know deep down he isn't like the rest of the fire nation they have seen or heard of through propaganda but in their point of view, their village has seen nothing but war for however long its been around. and the kid's father probably knew he was fire nation since he said that line "a man's past is his own business." So he isn't holding any grudges or animosity towards Zuko. But it was sad that the entire village turned on him... Secondly: Iroh wasn't banished, he could return to the fire nation any time he wished, he chose to go and stay with Zuko because he thought of Zuko as his son, I don't think he is banished at this point in the show but he might as well be, since his ideologies and beliefs don't match the fire nation's.

    This is literally my favorite episode in season 2, and really highlights Zuko's phases in transformation.
    SPOILERS!
    "As kids we're taught that the fire nation is the greatest civilization in history, and somehow the war was our way of sharing that greatness with the world" Zuko, all the way through season 1, and through most of what we've seen in season 2 up until this episode believes that what they've been indoctrinated to believe in schools. Everyone in the fire nation mostly still believes that too, they haven't been exposed to the suffering that other families have been put through as a result of the threat the fire nation poses. "What an amazing lie that was. The people of the world are terrified by the fire nation. They don't see our greatness, they hate us! And we deserve it!" His journey through season 2 is understanding that what's really happening in the world isn't really good. Fire nation soldiers are attacking people, and Zuko learns firsthand that even if youre a good person, just understanding that you're firenation writes you off as a bad person in the world's minds.

      She made the poison but she didn't kill him, it was the fire lords own son who killed him with the poison

    Just gotta say, as a lover of soundtracks myself I certainly appreciate Suraj's love for the Fire Nation's theme. :)

    You can’t be mad at the kid and his mother for hating Zuko. He legit just told them all he’s the prince of the fire nation, the nation that their son/brother was just captured by and may even be killed by. No matter how nice Zuko was to them, the fire nation has been making their life and the life of everyone else in the world miserable for the past 100 years

    Suraj: Where’s his mom now?
    That’s the biggest question of the entire show

    hearing them talk about uncle iroh but also knowing what happened and then the meaning behind the episode of when they tell you why he left the position of firelord is still heartbreaking.

    Interesting is that young Azula’s fire is not blue yet, if I remember it right her firebending is blue becose of some deep sadness emotions, so that mean she could change even more in to crazy monster after her and Zuko’s mum left to exile.

    Not sure if mentioned already in the comments but Avatar was originally set in the future with Aang awakening from cryogenic stasis. And his special trait would be his knowledge of how all ancient and lost technology works, something the modern day inhabitants of the world lost long ago. Momo was going to be robot. I think there were zeppelins too. Of course they scrapped that take on the show and went for mystical and their own world.

    Ursa (aka Zuko's mom) killed Firelord Azulon to save Zuko. Azulon ordered Ozai to kill his son, in order to save his life she poisoned Azulon, also helping Ozai become firelord. In the end, she was banished.

    17:12 - 17:55 was *painful* to watch. Every single guy talked over Rana and she never even got to finish her thought. This isn't the first time this has happened either, it's just the most obvious because she kept trying to talk instead of backing down immediately. Not cool, dudes.

    To save Zuko, Ursa told Ozai that she could make a transparent liquid poison to help kill Azulon and make her husband Fire Lord. When the plan succeeded, Ozai banished Ursa knowing that she could use that poison on him as well.
