The point is get the game finished before you blow it on pointless hype and accessories for people who pre order. I don't need Jungle Jim looking at scrotums as I can watch a documentary or better still read a book and I don't need an office onager with my game. I need a game that works and as a loyal fan the very mention of Rome II was enough hype for me.
I remember watching a History Channel show about Rome and they used the original Rome Total War for the battle scenes, but they called it their "Advanced simulation software" or something like that lol.
Is that the show that decided the best weapon of the time was a throwing axe based on a total war game and some bullshit reasoning? Because that made me laugh my ass off when I saw it.
Haha, I love how he just wasted a pilum like that. The thing about pilum is that it's only a one-time use. The metallic spear is soft iron that is intended to bend once it impales a target making it difficult to dislodge it. And when it does get dislodged, the pilum becomes useless deliberately for the enemy to throw back at the Roman army.
this is actually pretty well done.. what makes it very useful is that myke isnt a reenactor but if theres one thing ive realised its that whether its 10ad or 2014ad, if you're and infantryman there will be commonalitiesto how you spend most of your day, namely a lot of marching, a lot of guard duty... and a lot of patrols, carrying most of your stuff with you on the march, myke understands what soldiering entails, so he can appreciate things he gets how it feels to march for several miles to stand patrol in driving rain, so i think he provides very good links between then and now..
+Aelius Magnus No. Cross the Rhine, and crucify unwashed barbarian who dare stands before the IMPERIUM OF ROME NEVER FORGET THE SEVENTEENTH AND NINETEENTH LEGIONS
+beyondthelol ceasar didn't fuck it up constantin did. he wanted to make constantinople the capital of ROME. that's when the eastern and western roman Empire divided. the western Empire got attacked by the germanic tribes and the eastern roman Empire didn't help. that caused the fall of the (western) roman empire.
The pilum that guy threw is never gonna be used again. Pilums have soft iron tip so that they're designed to bend upon penetration. Not only does this make it hard for the enemy to pry it out of their body, but the disposability make it impossible for the enemies to throw the pilum back at the army that chucked them.
Actually, from what I've read, pila had a hardened iron tip and a softer iron shaft. The pointed tip needed to be hard to penetrate the enemy's shield and body, while the javelin shaft was softer so it would deform upon impact, making it useless to throw back.
If I could choose anytime in history to be alive it would have to be the Roman Empire or olde England. Some time when people cared and there was brotherhood and a flowering of creativity. We've strayed so far from where we should be that its heartbreaking. It's a horrible thing for me to say, but the ship is down at the bottom of the ocean now and we're doomed along with it. A slow crawl to total destruction. It will be all our fault too. We should have never embraced Christianity for starters and we should have seen technology and selfishness as enemies not friends. Christ was a great man, but after he died so much advantage was taken from that that I bet you if he and or The Romans came to earth now they'd be horrified and call us a bunch of fools and idiots and losers. Fuck modern civilization give me a tent, some good things to carry, some warm blankets, a warm bear, a warm lion, and an even warmer soldier the one good thing we still have. Let's hope we at least get to keep that wondrous invention The Soldier. I love them and so should you!
Times never stand still my friend that's life and every Empire rises only to fall...Rome lasted for century's but tore itself apart by greed and corruption
boomerhgt That's true. Time moves on all the time, but we never learned from Rome the first true Empire what inevitable greed and corruption do. They brought the Roman Empire and every other empire after that down. We'll be next. That's unfortunately what I think.
+Benjamin Blake Mitchner I disagree with you that the Roman Empire was the first one. Egypt and Babylon were both great in their heydays and both were eventually brought down by greed and corruption. The Chinese dynasties to the East. It has happened again and will continue to happen over and over again. The greed of man knows no bound. It is possible to build an utopia society and world but highly improbable due to people's unwillingness to share and cooperate. And unfortunately, it is those same people that are in charge of modern day's governments and major superpowers. I mean if you look at the northern Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, they got a pretty great thing going there. It is possible but the rest of the world isn't gonna follow that because the people in charge don't want to lose power. But hey, what can you do. We are all just pawns in the scheme of things. If Earth self-destructed right now, the Universe wouldn't bat an eye. All we can do is hope World War III doesn't happen in our time and hope humanity will still be there after World War III.
+Benjamin Blake Mitchner "I bet you if he and or The Romans came to earth now they'd be horrified and call us a bunch of fools and idiots and losers." Jesus? probably. The Romans? No way, we got everything they had and more, mostly because our civilization was build on the fundament of their ideas. We got sanitations everywhere, not just in our capitals and big cities, we got democracy and a Roman based judiciary, we got well equipped and disciplined armies and soldiers. Basically, if a Roman would stumble into today Western civilization the only things he would wonder about are that none speaks Latin and/or Greek, women are equal to men before law and everyone is wearing pants, not just the soldiers in Northern climates. You romanticize the Roman culture as being enlightened in every aspect, as generous and wise above all else when Romans were mostly pragmatic first.
Ah! that shield that he is holding with the leather shield covering! Isn't that one a replica of a finding in the Netherlands? The one I am referring to belonged to the Cohors XV Voluntariorum civium Romanorum, wich happens to be the cohort with the re-enactment group I'm a member of re-creates in it's displays and shows. SCORE!
Im not claiming to be a history expert, but the hamata was never really fully replaced by the Segmentata, because the Segmentata was too expensive to make.
The one mistake here, if a line broke, the battle was over, the side that the line was broken, lost, the idea that line would brake and the battle would be a confusion of soldiers fighting is a Hollywood fantasy
Does anybody know where I can buy inexpensive roman armor? I mean, I'm not expecting crazy cheap, but for a full set (but without the pila/stick in this video) the cheapest I can find is more than $700
I dunno if the furca was actually as good as this dude makes it sound. A backpack spreads the weight between 2 straps and balances it better. With the furca, you would have to switch your shoulder periodically, but is definitely better than carrying stuff in your hand or in a sac thrown over your shoulder. Also the steel studs on caligas, I dunno, they seem a bit far fetched.
Search Reenactment Associations which focus on the Roman culture. Legio XXI Rapax or Terra Dacica Aeterna who boasts Legio V Macedonica. There is also Legio I Italica. Then there would Legio XIII Gemina and many more. Keep a close eye on them as during summer, they attend several events throughout Europe and all they do is basically... live like the romans did on campaign. Very, very educative. Not to mention that the battles they do can be entertaining as well.
...it SEEMS easy!... ...but try do it for 20 years - marching everyday - under scorching sun or pouring rain - no matter what - 30km's per day - beginning each day with dismantilng a camp and finishing it building a new one. Do it for 20 YEARS - doing the SAME EACH DAY AGAIN & AGAIN! - PLUS: fight one day each on three, fencing enemy ambushes, and once in a year having a major battle once in a year...and don't EVER complain, 'cause you might get flogged if your centurion's just is in a bad mood! :D ...TRY IT! >: ) ... and only THEN come back "SMILING"! :D PS. These guys must have been like old, heavy leather...
+Johann Schmidt In these days I doubt you can say the word "never" that easy. If you look at records of Roman VS Macedonian battle, there are depicts of Macedonian infantries' heads and arms cut off which can't be done by stabbing only. Of course those who slice were mocked by others but slicing was kind of impromptu.
It's a shame that like 0% of the 'in game footage' is visible IN THE GAME. None of it is FROM the game. Sure, it looks like it's rendered in the game engine, but it's rendered as a video recording, it isn't IN the game, you won't see any of this shit. :C
That is very dishonorable but very clever. I am sure certain armies would be aware of the tactic after some time. But wildmen would get iced. Roman's faught with their heads as well as their gear.

The budget went into buying enough cigarettes to make his voice like that
RussianFluff, Think before you take a joke seriously, or you'll make yourself look like an idiot.
He's Army Special Forces and a former Drill Sergeant that is gonna take a toll on your voice.
3:28 Roman soldier: "The fuck, you think this is a game?"
Very intimidating
Contruberium=10 man
(8 soldiers+2 slaves)
Lorica segmentata not so common as you think.
We know where all of the budget for this game went.
3 reenactors?
Keith Larsen
3 very lucky (and now very rich) reenactors. :P *sarcasm*
Dominic Mercurio one was batman, oh he wasnt reenacting?
Dominic Mercurio The main one (the one wearing the black t-shirt) was in a survival show I believe
The point is get the game finished before you blow it on pointless hype and accessories for people who pre order. Why does he talk like batman?
because he is
That guy's voice reminds of some of the Skyrim NPCs.
He sounds like the blacksmith in Whiterun
"I'd be a lot warmer and a lot happier with a bellyful of mead..."
"Yes, Dovahkiin? How can I help you?"
"By the Gods! What manner of power is that?"
"What is it, Argonian?"
Still better than history chanel
Funny enough there was a show on the history channel that used the first Total War Game called "Decisive Battles" who would have thought?
I remember watching a History Channel show about Rome and they used the original Rome Total War for the battle scenes, but they called it their "Advanced simulation software" or something like that lol.
Is that the show that decided the best weapon of the time was a throwing axe based on a total war game and some bullshit reasoning? Because that made me laugh my ass off when I saw it.
Y'know now that you say that I do remember something about throwing axes. Damn, what was the name of that show?
BandNerdcp I don't remember because I think I watched it in like 2004 or 5.
"But, as an infantryman, you're going to have to carry your own equipment, which is carried by this fucker here."
That's what I heard, too.
+Jezi It's almost as bad as misspelling scutum on Google.
Haha, I love how he just wasted a pilum like that. The thing about pilum is that it's only a one-time use. The metallic spear is soft iron that is intended to bend once it impales a target making it difficult to dislodge it. Actually its main use was to pierce enemy shields, rendering their shield useless which meant no shield for that guy.
Because it make the shield too heavy due to soft iron tip round itself
not to heavy but u cant use a shield with a pilum hanging on front of it stoping all ur movements
this is actually pretty well done.. what makes it very useful is that myke isnt a reenactor but if theres one thing ive realised its that whether its 10ad or 2014ad, if you're and infantryman there will be commonalitiesto how you spend most of your day, namely a lot of marching, a lot of guard duty... and a lot of patrols, carrying most of your stuff with you on the march,

Master chiefs young brother?
Too bad the empire fell due to ignorance. We could of really been somewhere if the empire lasted much longer.
+Revrot It survived until the 15th century. How much longer could you expect?
+Patrick Riley It would have lasted a lot longer had caesar not fucked it up
+Aelius Magnus
No. Cross the Rhine, and crucify unwashed barbarian who dare stands before the IMPERIUM OF ROME
NEVER FORGET THE SEVENTEENTH AND NINETEENTH LEGIONS
+Revrot Most of our laws are based on Roman laws.

Ayy AngryJoe
lmao
Angry Joe
3:26 like a boss

Come at me bro.

This is how Batman in the Dark Knight should have sounded like.
The pilum that guy threw is never gonna be used again. Pilums have soft iron tip so that they're designed to bend upon penetration. I love this guys voice.
1:07 My squad in the army was 8 guys and that tent looks like a goddamn palace compared to what we had to sleep in.
I wanna hear this guy say " I am batman"
Caligae: steel from the toe to the heel.
15 years laters, this guy will say : i am the Optimus prime, we are here we are waiting..
more of this please
I dont think that this was scripted
by a human
the voice of this guy is like Boba Fett, cool host for a topic like this, Roma Victor!!
Batman? Is it you?
Well done! :)SIMPLE and INTERESTING! Thumb UP! ;)
He looks like he’s about to run away from home

Lol at 3:10 you can hear how the armor fell on the ground :P
thanks captain obvious
Contrumbernium had 8 men and 2 slaves/workers. Cont=10
Didn't need to travel all the way to the UK to shoot this. There are Roman reenactors such as myself here in the US.
If he isn't a voice actor, he's missing out big time

hahahah ''sandals?!? - caligae''
Your intro is like ten times louder than the rest of the video. You literally fucking blew my ear drums out.
4:02 so basically the guy at the very end thrusts the air, nice.
It's a shame that Rome 2 didn't come out as good as expected :/
The one mistake here, if a line broke, the battle was over, the side that the line was broken, lost, the idea that line would brake and the battle would be a confusion of soldiers fighting is a Hollywood fantasy
the game cutscenes are from roma 2 total war
Roman Army is more interesting then I first thought.
Where did all the money go to fix the AI issues in Rome 2? I bet all the money went to this greaseball.
Does anybody know where I can buy inexpensive roman armor? I mean, I'm not expecting crazy cheap, but for a full set (but without the pila/stick in this video) the cheapest I can find is more than $700
Somebody can write down what is the recipe of Posca. I mean the exact quantity of the ingredient? Pls help me with it.
4:19 and this is where he starts to come up with some bullshit
Very good practice
I dont think there armor and helmets were so shiny back at the day...

really? isnt shogun harder?
+Rafael Llaban from my own experience, shogun 2 is slightly easier from rome 2....well, this is just my opinion
I think I might get wearyus if I triedus this.
welp... off to play Rome 2
The Romans would NEVER "slice and dice." Such a barbaric style
+Johann Schmidt they did cut occasionally when not in formation but not how this guy is doing it
+Johann Schmidt In these days I doubt you can say the word "never" that easy. Tell me how can you carry a backpack with a lorica segmentata
runfire1337 would you need to ? did they march in full armour ?
mcpartridgeboy Yes, to wear this armor you need to be helped! and during a battle isn't fine to fight without armor
runfire1337 drunk fuck here but if you got help you can take my backpack as esy as taking m6y stick, the main force of labour would be putting that metal on right ? I'm drunk !
main force of what? it's a legion, an army not a group of common slaves!
The guy in the black shirt is just terrible. Whoever did his writing needs to be punched.
