How to make carbon nanotubules at home with a microwave

  • This is something i have been thinking about doing for a while. It seemed to work but see if I really made carbon nanotubules you'd really have to do a bit more investigation - Any how it certainly was interesting. Materials I have developed since this very old video are available at our webshop at www.workingink.co.uk.

    You have most likely produced some few layer graphene/Iron (III) chloride intercalated compounds here. I use a similar recipe to make graphene, but instead of using a microwave you can dehydrate the sample and then exfoliate it in hydrogen peroxide solution, dehydrate and repeat a few times to get just a few layers of graphene.

    Have you heard of damascus steel? It is wet crumbled iron mixed with finely chopped plant material and covered with clay and cooked into steel. The strength is mythical and they recently found it contained nanotubes from a thousand years ago! The wood must contain polyphenols and obviously carbon. And the iron is the catalyst and allows you to reach extreme temperatures without it boiling.

    • @mdimarco87
      @mdimarco87 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      " A research team in Germany published a report in 2006 revealing nanowires and carbon nanotubes in a blade forged from Damascus steel.[5] This finding was covered by National Geographic[6] and the New York Times.[7] Although certain types of modern steel outperform these swords, chemical reactions in the production process made the blades extraordinary for their time, as damascus steel was superplastic and very hard at the same time. During the smelting process to obtain Wootz steel ingots, woody biomass and leaves are known to have been used as carburizing additives along with certain specific types of iron rich in microalloying elements. These ingots would then be further forged and worked into Damascus steel blades, and research now shows that carbon nanotubes can be derived from plant fibers,[8] suggesting how the nanotubes were formed in the steel."

    Now that it’s been 8 years, have you come up with any better methods for this? It sounds like you don’t know if it’s actual carbon nanotubes or not. I know this is an old video but I hope you see this comment. If you do have more ideas on it, can you make a video about it?

  • @mdimarco87

    So I watched it again and I'm not convinced anymore. How do we know the heat didn't just kick the polyphenols off the iron and destroy them? Also even if there is carbon on the iron how do we know that it isn't just the iron in solution still conducting? Could you show me some papers that would lead one to believe nanotubes were formed in a procedure like this?

    I checked out your video on crystal batteries - and like all good work it set me thinking - there is just so much to do - the world is truely a fascinating place - i reacently got some sodium silicate for another experiment and i have a fair bit kicking around so I will try some of your ideas and let you know how i get on. At them moment i am working on a cheap and easy way to get graphene so i hope to mix the two. This started because i was looking at conductive inks to make an energy collector

    I looked at the video - which I liked - a lot and I have added replicating it to my 'to do' list. At the moment I am trying to come up with an easy way for people to make graphene at home. The production methods are quick but the collection methods are slow. Mostly because of my limited equipment. but thanks for your comments and i will keep on working on it.

    My friend I don't think you are Making Carbon Nano Anything. No Offense You said it Was interesting (which IS TRUE) and You wanted More answers I think I can Help.
    I Think; that when you Turned the iron chloride in the Iron Solution Black (Like Iron(II) Oxide); THAT was Iron Oxide Nano Particles I say so because it looks Just like the Sol-gel Process for making Thermate (a nastier Thermite) I is offen refered to as "Nano-thermite" Because it is composed of Nano Particles of the aluminum and Iron oxide, which (Predictably) increases their surface area and Rate of Reaction.
    Anyway Iron Oxide Particles that's What You Made. I THINK. That is why it changed color from Black to Red in contact with air you turned you iron(II) Oxide (Which is Black) into Iron (III) Oxide (Which is RED).
    Anyway Still Very Interesting I'll still Sub and Thumb up you

    was curious about solar panels earlier, so i looked up how they worked, and than i read about how it uses silicon(as i understand it, atleast partly because of high conductivity). And than i remembered a random thing i read a few months ago about graphene and how its crazy conductive.
    So now i really wish i knew more about chemistry so i could try making carbon nano structure based photo-voltaic panels. I have this hunch that it would do something.
