    Hey awesome possums. Just letting you know Vay is actually releasing on Steam in July 2024.

    Strange Brew - Less filling. This is probably another working designs pop culture reference. Miller Lites advertising at the time were taste tests where people argue over whether it’s less filling or taste great. You can find the old ads on TH-cam. It’s something everyone at the time would’ve recognized .

    I loved Vay as a kid. I don't remember having to grind but I do remember the final area being super tough - probably the only RPG I started and didn't finish. Around that time I was gifted a SNES and Crono Trigger took over : )
    Strange Brew - less filling... tastes great.
    It's a beer reference.

      Also seconded about the soundtrack - 14:05 is beautiful stuff !

    Woah this game is similar to The 7th Saga. According to TCRF, Working Designs change monster stats in US localization which makes the game difficult like enix did to the 7th saga

    @ArispeMatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Fun note from the Cutting Room Floor, the original cost of the Restore spell was apparently 18 MP. And monster stat changes were all over the place.

    This was actually my very first RPG. I played this and Lunar first RPGs ever. I loved this game, I was maybe 4th or 5th grade and owned a Sega cd. This game made me fall in love with role playing, with the grinding for gear, grinding for levels so I wouldn’t get my ass handed to me. I did enjoy the mobile version I played a few years back seeing as they gave more xp and gold. Made the game easier and a nice play back.

    Got this used same day I picked up Snatcher in box with manual, never made it past the first bossfight. Had a manager at the time, blockbuster waning days, who swore by it. Thanks for the vid. Subbed.

    I remember buying a Sega CD used and this game was thrown in. I definitely don't have time for this level of grinding anymore. 😂

    Man I loved this game so much, I cried, I yelled, I grinded so fucking much. The music was so damn awesome I think you could put the game disk in cd players and listen the sound track? Idk I remember recording them cause I loved it so much. This game is a huge part of my childhood and just hearing the music again filled me with so many memories I almost cried again haha. Thank you for this awesome video and for not judging it to harshly. I would love to play a rom version with cheats just for nostalgia. My brother beat the game, the last boss fight was insane!! Anyone watching this video needs to watch the final fight! Man he struggled so much…I never got the end. Endless hours of fun regardless….

    Great retrospective. I do have Vay. I got it about 10 years ago. Played for a few hours, but got sidetracked. I do want to go back and finish it sometime in the next few years. You know how backlogs go. That music was fire!

    I had aTG16 CD as a kid, so never got to play the Sega CD, but I'm enjoying it now. Currently playing vay patched with 1/4 encounter rate. The Sega CD was amazing.

    I believe the Strange Brew item description is reference to the movie Strange Brew. A classic comedy about two beer loving Canucks' misadventures in a brewery.
    Had this game back in the day. I enjoyed it but the grinding was truly ridiculous.

      This tracks, "Less filling" was a slogan used by Miller Lite which fits the beer theme and is in line with Vic Islands punny humor

  • @Arisilde
    @Arisilde หลายเดือนก่อน

    Strange brew is a reference to an old Miller Lite beer commercial; "Less filling, tastes great." and brew obviously being old slang for beer.

    I played this on my dad’s sega cd as a kid and remember liking it, but also liking lunar and lunar 2 way more…I never got further than getting the axe chick. Then I downloaded it on the iphone a while back thinking “THIS is the time to finally finish it!” But now I’m an adult who’s even pickier about what games I invest my time in because I have so little of it. So long story short, and after spoiling some pivotal moments watching this (I make it a point not to watch spoilers), it’s time I put Vay to bed for good, although I will never forget it.

    Okay, I subbed pretty much because you played Lunar and Vay, which were...amazing experiences for me back in the 90s. And I applaud your review of Vay itself, which is pretty spot on, (oh god, the grind) But one thing I can't figure out- with this channel spending so much effort on Ye Olde JRPGs, WHY IS THERE NO MENTION OF CRYSTALIS?

    I got Vay the day it released, and for its time, it wasnt bad at all. The music was great, and the story, while slow to get into, turned out to be pretty engaging. The treasure vortex I could have done without (Working designs are evil people) but overall I liked it.

    Vay is the only physical Sega CD game that I own. My brother traded our Sega CD and all the games into funcoland. We were for some reason left with just the Genesis console and Vay, probably because funcoland didn't want them. For some reason we never got around to selling it, probably should.
    I definitely had fond memories of the music. I don't think we ever got that far as kids. Pottle dying was a big deal back then.

    Great review! I loved this game when it came out. Story was good. The grinding didn't bother me too much as the combat was decent in this game. Like you mentioned the soundtrack is down right amazing.

    I'm surprised to hear about the difficulty of this game, I remember playing it as a fairly unsophisticated young gamer and getting to the end of the game without much trouble

    I kinda loved this game at the beginning. It was so cool that I could get the special armour from the beginning, but I cried inside when it SUCKED. My guy was essentially the same. Why did it take that ritual to seal that armour when any random encounter would have done it lol

    I played this game on an emulator back in like 07 or 08 when i first discovered emulators and was playing the crap out of any and every retro rpg i could find. Definitely was very grinding and i never made it very far because of it but i still remember it having a charm to it i loved a lot. Maybe it was the cutscenes that did it for me. Recently i got the iPhone version and while touch controls are terrible, it does support Bluetooth controllers AND it’s actually much easier. Doesn’t feel as grindy as when i played the saga cd rom of it, while i did still have to grind a bit. I’d say the mobile phone is worth playing it especially for the price of a dollar which is what i paid for it i think

    I picked up this game disk only for about $50.00 on amazon in late 2021. I have played about 1/2 way through it. It is a pretty cool game. But the grinding oh my the grinding. The first boss took me an hour to beat. I knew I was in for a crazy time. I have been wanting to get back around to finishing it, but my Sega CD has decided to crap out on me and I haven't been able to replace it or have it fixed yet. I will replace or fix it because like you said this game along with Popful Mail, and Panic are not available anywhere else in the english speaking world.

    This game was ruined by Working Designs. There's a romhack for Vay called the "Unworked Patch" that reverts this to the original Japanese MP Costs/Inn prices/item stats/etc. The original was not totally unbalanced before Working Designs trashed it and made all the prices and stats make no sense. Combined with the "Battle Reduction" encounter rate patch, the game is much better. Only gaming historians need to play the Working Designs version, if you want to actually enjoy this there's no reason to torture yourself with the changes Working Designs made.

    Haha RETARDOTAUR is so funny. Working Designs localization work may not be accurate, but they never fail to bring a smile to my face. The real sin of Working Designs is their adjustments to game difficulty. Thankfully the patch you mentioned in your video keeps the humor and restores the original Japanese difficulty so you get the best of both worlds.

    I have Vay on IOS. I actually like the new art on the player characters. Problem is, th enemy sprits are still the originals, so it clashes really bad. A ton of name changes, making character has a different name, and the movement is god awful. Music still rocks, though. I think the grind is also much better.

    If you don't like to grind I'm not sure why you play games where that type of combat is the code gameplay.
