For me, Chaos A.D. is a quintessential metal album for the 90s (along with Vulgar, Demanufacture & Burn My Eyes) as so many bands can have their influences traced back to that album. Plus the lyrics leaning into real-life stories tackling heavy subject matter (Kaiowas, Territory, Manifest etc) was a MASSIVE step up from stuff like Morbid Visions (I find that album cute more than anything)

Love these discography ranking videos. It gives us viewers a chance to see how the reviewers feel about the older albums of a band. I loved Anthony Fantano’s Worst To Best series as well as his tier lists, but since he doesn’t really do them anymore and I mostly listen to rock and metal, these videos are fun to watch. Would love to eventually see one of these done for bands like Morbid Angel and Voivod.

  • @nelsonshuchmacherendebo7688
    @nelsonshuchmacherendebo7688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Great video Robert. Really difficult discography to appraise and evaluate because of the range and diversity. I honestly love all those records for different reasons. Truly one of the most groundbreaking and unique catalogs in all metal. Love Sepultura since I was a kid, and still do.
Igor Cavalera is one of the greatest metal drummers of all time. Never mentioned anywhere, which is a shame. Recently, I saw an interview with Bruno Valverde, who replaced Eloy in some US shows after he broke his leg. Bruno, a highly studied musician, had to learn Igor’s drumwork for the set, and he was astonished at Igor’s creativity. Igor had no formal training, just a crazy sharp artistic intuition. Today he gets crap for not having Eloy’s stamina (who the heck does anyway?) but he’s a true innovator and is still releasing really cool, leftfield music.
If you dig Sepultura’s late 90s and early 2000s experiments, look up the EPs and b-sides from that period. They’ve covered so much sonic ground, have explored so many shades of extreme music over the years. One of the most forward thinking and open minded bands, and forgers of a unique aesthetic.

I understand how people would like that album for the rawness but man the production kills it for me and the guitar tone, max vocals also could do with being dialled back just a touch, also I felt alot of the songs just blend in together and don't separate themselves enough except for troops of doom, I understand it though, it isn't terrible and has got its own vibe going on which adds cool points

This is one of the greatest bands of all time. They invented Cannibal Corpse, Slipknot, and Korn a decade before some of them even existed. Without Sepultura, us demons would not have theme songs for converting people to the satanic new world order. Without Sepultura, metal would cease to exist and the world would cease to exist.

Great reviews! When I first hear "The Mediator...." I was put on my ass! I will take Arise as my favorite up until then but this album fits greatly more with where my taste in metal is and it was quickly my new favorite Sepultura album.
    Then Machine Messiah came out!
Then Quadra!! "Agony Of Defeat" is easily one of my favorite metal tracks. period. That song is a goddamn masterpiece to me and Derrick's voice is great! It's a shame that so many people won't even listen to it, they could easily be the biggest metal band in the world (but, i think they also need to perform with a second guitar, that is holding them back a lot)

I like the Derrick Green era since Kairos and afterwards. Was hard to find the previous DG albums. Unlike other frontmen, he didn't change the identity of the band too far compared to other bands. I will say that Kairos did have a lot of repetition compared to the later albums I listened to.

I am not a huge Sepultura fan (I think Bestial Devastation EP is their best work, which isn't a take I would expect of me),but the way people write off Dereck Green era just because it has no Max is just really disheartening. • @themetalmeltdownofficial

“so I can justify that score”..Dude, love your work man, but having the last two albums outscore Beneath the Remains is (aside from being objectively wrong -wink) just plain ahistorical IM(not so?)HO. Listening to you talk, and realising when you first started to get into Sepulttura, you can’t possibly comprehend how groundbreaking and earth shattering Beneath the Remains was when it came out. I was 14 when I found BTR on cassette in one of New Zealand’s only specialist metal stores and man that thing barely left my Walkman (err, cheap knockoff thereof…)That album fucking split the sky, man. Not just for me, but for an entire generation of metal heads. It sounded so perfectly produced, so technical with its stop-and-change-on-a-pinhead riffs and rhythms, and so brutal. Even lyrically, it was punky, enraged, apocalyptic. It’s my favourite of theirs by a long way and it still to this day occupies a spot in my rotation. Stone cold masterpiece.
Loved the review though man, glad to hear your takes and looking forward to giving Machine Messiah another spin some day soon.

Chaos A.D and Roots have always been my favorite, because of how the Brazilian music blended with metal in unexpected ways, but they are excellent before and good after that point too. I definitely need to listen to their newest stuff because I haven't listened past the Mediator. They are a band that is also not annoying when they get political, which is tricky to pull off.

Max left. The band started making money and wanted to fire Gloria. While on tour for this album, Glo's son Dana was killed, and, Andreas's wife tried to have a funeral and have him buried while the band was out to make sure the tour wouldn't stop. The band wanted to not only fire Glo, but fire multiple band techs and roadies who had been with them for over a decade. That is why Max walked away.

I agree mostly with your takes here, after nation I fell of the bandwagon abit with the Derrick green era, albums like roorback etc seemed abit unambitious, the songwriting seemed weak and like there wasn't a whole lot of effort put in, there were some cool riffs here and there but they didn't go anywhere really or progress enough, it just didn't strike anything with me, they weren't horrible but abit meh, then after a absolute age of not listening to them I decided to check out machine messiah and was absolutely blown away by how good that was, I understood people gravitating more towards the max era but that album I had to question wheather it was actually better than afew of those albums, Arise and Beneath the remains are still undoubtedly the classics for me with chaos Ad from that Era but I feel the latest couple are stronger than albums like Morbid visions and even roots for me.. roots I have alot of nostalgia for, it got me away from nu metal and more into the thrash simply by checking sepulturas back catalogue but man, other than ratamahatta, cut throat and the title track it doesn't hit me like it used too, it's impressive the turnaround they have made so late into there career for sure

I think most people who say that haven't given the last three Sepultura albums a chance, especially "Quadra". The first three songs on that album are excellent.

Usually I agree with you dismissing EPs, demos and live albums, but I think in this very case their debut EP "Bestial devastation" deserves to be talked about. I wouldn´t call it influential or massively important because noone barely even talks about this EP, but it definitely should get more recognition. I mean this thing was released in 1985 and is way too extreme for being considered only thrash. I´d even argue that this is more death metal than Scream bloody gore and arguably the very first pure death metal release. You could also consider it black metal, but for me it definitely leans more towards the death metal side. Also it was better than Morbid visions in every way.

I am 41 years of age. I've been into metal for quite some time. In my junior high, and high school years, you could literally grab anything with the Road Racer / Road Runner logo on it and it would be a certified banger. 100%! CERTIFIED! BANGER! I remember the day it all went to shit....it was the day Road Runner released the debut Slipknot album. That entire label leaned HARD into commercialism from that point forward. Now....who really gives a fuck about Road Runner?

    5: Morbid Visions

The first four Sepultura records are among my most favorite albums ever. The progression between all of them is truly amazing, but everything goes downhill after Arise. I didn't mind their 90s output during the 90s, but it didn't hold up over time. Honestly the last album I heard from them was Nation, which was not too good. I get it though, like a lot of 80s bands they had to progress further to stay relevant, but it just never appealed to my tastes.

But as i started rediscovering metal quadra fucking hit me so hard that i had to get the complete discography only owning beneath til roots before.
