If you still read old comments, thin the fruit out like others have said, but also I use NEEM oil as a natural pesticide weekly on my fruit trees, really helps control the dimples and damage pests can do. Good Luck, and I love your content. I am Binging from the beginning. Four days in so far, I am retired, so I don't have much else to do. I have family in NE with 7K farm, I had no idea. Now I want to go out there and farm. Keep up the great content.

The main thing to do right now for the apple tree is to thin the fruit. To do this, remove apples such that the remaining apples on the tree are 6 to 8 inches apart. We don't want clusters of two and three or more fruit. Cutting the fruit stems minimizes disease. Also remove any apples that are at the very end of the branches and are causing the branches to bend down. I think you can feed the removed apples to cows or other livestock. Just don't leave them on the ground because they attract pests and disease. The trees don't seem to need fertilizer, so don't do that. Make sure they get adequate water. There is more care that will be needed later. I can give you advice if you show us more of the tree.
Finally, the tree is competing for water and nutrients with those weeds under the tree. It would be good to cultivate those weeds and apply mulch out to the canopy drip line.

No matter what kind of apples you are growing, to get nice ones you need to thin out the branches so the root system is concentrating on supplying fewer larger apples and branches instead of many smaller ones. But don't overdo the trimming process. Great content as always Laura

Laura I really love your channel. It's the only farming channel I subscribe to and it is because of two reasons. First one is the great content. The second one is because as an over the road trucker I have days where people get me upset. However, I know at the end of the day I will smile because your infectious smile just makes someone else smile naturally. So you said thank you to us and I'm saying thank you for being you and the food on our plates. God bless you and your family and God bless this great country of ours.

Apple farmer here. Could you elaborate on what you mean by healthy? The trees you show look good. I don't see any pest bites or fungus on your leaves....are you not getting a very big crop? Did you have a large bloom? Do you have bees around the tree's during the bloom? When do your apples mature? This will help us narrow down the variety.

I also like how you take care of your land and crops. I drive past many bean and corn crops hare in eastern NE and see so many fields that are just infested with weeds. I can't help you with the apples. Take care and keep up the great work that the two of you do.

As I read through the comments about pivots, I grew up with flood irrigation, and the huge lateral ditches which carried water from the river and dams to smaller lakes and ultimately individual farms and then setting tubes normally twice a day, tubes up to 2 in. and moving the various canvas dams as well. Hard work, but most of the cost of the irrigation was paid in the past, when the ditches were dug. Different situations for different farms. Good job.

We had a drought back in the mid-70s which prompted the government to ask our Indigenous People to conduct a rain ceremony. Lots of people also went to their place of worship and prayed for rain. The rains did come, and flooded the state capital. Moral of the story: ask by all and any means, but be careful what you ask for.

I think you said your grandfather also did a couple of tours there too. Ask your grandfather if he knew a EOC Teel. My father was attached to MCB-1. Sadly my father has passed. Pass on my thanks to a fellow veteran (your grandfather) for his service. Seems appropriate since tomorrow is Veteran's Day.

It is so funny, as a kid I lived on a farm in Idaho West of Boise and we used aluminum siphon tubes from the ditch to rows in the dirt. It was a ton of work. That was one thing I did as a little kid was use a sponge and create a suction in the tube. I was under 9 years old and I can't find anyone that still does it that way. Everyone has gone to spraying like you do it or depend on rain.

Recently on another channel, there was a comment about the joy of riding an open-station tractor in road gear after working up a sweat all day working rows. That's a pleasure not lost on a fossil like me.

Now what I would like for you to show people, the big difference between Laura farms and modern Amish farming! Satellite steered tractors/ horse drawn equipment, fast tractors over slow horses! Don’t know if you’d like to; but the difference is so amazing similar and interesting! But was so interesting on farming techniques! I think you’d find it pretty cool 😎 too!!!

Yes you need to fertilize the trees. Fruit tree spikes are the easy way to fertilize your fruit trees. Any top dressing with compost/mulch will go along way. with trees its more about long lasting non liquid ferts, because the roots are deep and the nutrients need to soak in farther than vegies. A slow release fertilizer with npk ratio of something like 5-10-10 with a good micronutrients booster. since its a tree it takes a while for the stuff to take effect. So if you start now you will see good results next year.
Also for this years harvest you can help by foliage feeding as the fruits this year are so far along they wont show good results from just soil feeding as the ferts take several weeks to start working. what i have done is to spray foliage with a 25% strength solution of ferts with a kelp additive to promote more chlorophyll and chloroplast. this will help not just trees but all crops better utilize the sun to grow faster and better harvests.

For the apple tree it is best to have the harvest on the outer edge of the tree so you should prune any tree limbs on the inside and prune any "suckers" ( branches that shoot straight up taking nourishment away from the apples) basically you end up with a bowl shaped tree.

    Hi Laura!
your apple trees need some pruning every year, they will do well with some natural manure, ideally chicken or cow manure, spread around the trees close to the trunk. in years with a lot of apples, you may want to single them out, then they will grow bigger, and not drain too much energy from the tree so it will again bloom enough the next year.
watch for the color of the leafs, the will indicate if there is a lack of nutiants or any pests around. needles to say, if any pests are evidend, spray if needed.
Apple may develop black spots in wet periods, that would be a fungus. if you see that then if's actually too late to spray.. the apples taste just as good with some of those spots. for own use, no need to spray.
Let me know if you have any other questions!!! Regards, Alex

You could graft all the other stone fruits to those apple trees it would look cool to see multi colored flowers on one tree.I made a pear,plum-apricot tree

space the apples out on the limbs leave 5-6 inches between them, it will improve the fruit size and color! fertilizer would be fine. 46.0.0 would work well. 2-3 handfuls spread around the drip line of the tree would be perfect!!! your better off buying Washington apples at the store! LOL

Apples are dicots, you are applying a monocot fertilizer? I would think a balanced fertilizer like a 20-20-20 would work better.
