- June 24 is the birth anniversary of both MS Viswanathan and Kannadasan. Shruthilayadeeptham pays tribute to both the legends through the song "Atisaya Ragam" rendered by Deepak Varma.

It was believed that a Carnatic Raga cannot be composed without a minimum of 5 notes including Sa. Though it is not a documented rule, that was the impression amongst all musicians. However, the legend Dr Balamuralikrishna (BMK) composed ragas with 4 and even 3 notes!! One of the most popular ragas amongst them is in Mahathi, with the notes / scale like this:

* About the movie*
A young man and an older woman fall in love and decide to marry; however, their lives become more complicated when he learns that his father is in love with the same woman's daughter.
This is the first movie where Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth have acted together in a movie.
About the song:
For the superb lyrics penned by Kannadasan, the music is even better.
The first 3 paragraphs of the song is composed in a strange little raga called Mahathi, recommended to MSV by legendary Dr. M Balamuralikrishna (BMK), who also created the raga.
Here is an excerpt from an interview with BMK:
“I ran into M.S. Viswanathan in AIR who was setting music for the movie. As the story revolved around strange relationships, the music director wanted to introduce new ragas to go with the ambient theme. I offered my “*Mahathi* scale.
The last charanam of the song is set to raga Bhairavi. Interestingly, the name of the raga features in the last line “muzhuvadum paarthaal aval oru Bhairavi” . Now here is the twist: the name of the female lead (played by Srividya) to whom the male lead (played by Kamal Haasan) sings this song in the film, is Bhairavi.
The song’s lyrics is straightforward until the last verse. The song apparently is about ragas but indirectly Kamal Haasan is singing about Srividya.
I will give the meaning/interpretation of the last paragraph:
Oru param paarthal mithilayin Mythili - At first sight she is the Mythili of Mithila, denoting she is pure.
*Maru Puram paarthal kaaviri Madhavi *- If you examine more closely, she is like the Madhavi in the Chilappathikaram story (unfaithful)
Mugam mattum paarthaal nilavin ethiroli - if you take her at face value, she is as beautiful as the reflection of the moon
Muzhuvathum paarthaal aval oru bhairavi - If you see it all, she is a Bhairavi.
This song is also rated as one of KJY’s best in tamizh.

“Athishya gaanam aananda gaanam “,
This was what our minds said in the cinema hall when the screen told us the audio visual story of two very strange couples. An energetic young man (Kamal Hassan ) happens to fall in love with an elderly but not very old lady (Sreevidya ). The daughter (Jayasudha ?) of Sreevidya had left her mother to fall in love with the father (Sundararajan?) of Kamal Hassan) . Because of the adamancy of the younger generation, the elderly lady and gentleman had to dance to the tunes of the younger ones.
The cinema tells a wonderful story among the stories narrated by Vethaal in the Vikram- Vethaal conversation. The direction of this movie was by one of the greatest showmen in the Tamil movie world. Towards the end of the story, a puzzle arises: who (which pair) should bow before whom ( which pair) for being blessed?
This song depicts the attraction Kamal feels towards Sreevidya . She was playing in the movie the character Bhairavi. In the song it is written that from one side she is like Seetha (Mythili)of Mithila and from another side she is like the prostitute Madhavi in Kaveri - story chilappathikaram ..
Sreevidya was not interested in having a relationship with Kamal. You can see the surprise and irritation on her face when Kamal says the love girl in his mind is Bhairavi (in the song “Aval oru Bhairavi”. )
It was Dr. Balamuralikrishna who helped MSV in using the then new raga Mahathi( Athishaya and Apoorva and Ananda Raagam)
The lyrics is great . Vasantha kaalathu mazhai tharum Megham … in the Spring seasons the rains are rare but very pleasantly cool and joy filled - flowers bloom everywhere . Kamal feels it is spring season in his mind whenever he sees Sreevidya.She rains a kind of sky high pleasantness in his mind.She is the grammar ( penmain ilakkanam) of feminineness.
Finally Dasettan has sung this song in his sweetest voice, unparalleled and unmatched in the Indian movie world. Deepu has absorbed all the features of the song because he is blessed up to the heavens by all the music Goddesses.His voice also gets so emotional while singing and can contain joy, love, sadness, Bhakti and sometimes even humour as seen in other songs.
This Mahathi Ragam reminds me of Valachi sometimes… Kadaaru maasam Naadaaru maasam.. song in Ezhuraathrikal - old Malayalam movie.
This song rendition is athishayam -- super wonderment..for Deepu… in my mind.
