I think they should have altered it a bit for Britain, for example the story could have been set at Oxford or Cambridge in the UK and they could have kept their British accents and British humour, would have been less wooden then.
I think they wanted to keep Elle's home in Malibu, because that comes with a lot of things like Delta Nu, UCLA, being in California. I think they wanted to keep these dimensions to Else's character so they kept it American.
