This is one of the most brilliantly written things that I have ever read. Each short poem packs such a punch that hits right in the gut. I looked it up after seeing a short film about "Tom Merritt", one of the epitaphs. When I saw the full anthology, I was awestruck. I think there are very few people, in modern times, that even know about this. Which is such a shame.
I think what Mr & Mrs Kessler share is living to a degree vicariously through others by a peripheral attachment to them, Mr Kessler through Grant, Mrs Kessler through the people she cleaned for. I think we need to hold out the possibility that Mr K is disabled and the attachment to Grant is a reminder of what he sacrificed for, his role, however small, within a great theater. Mrs K's theater is smaller but she has a sense of honor and purpose within it.
I am sure it wasn't filmed in The spoon River Valley. I have a family connections to Lewistown, IL, Masters birth place, and the whole area. I seriously doubt Prof. New has ever been into the heart of Illinois.

Very interesting! Was this filmed in the Spoon River area of Illinois?
