Jennifer Maker can you do it with elastic to go around the ears my dad can’t reach back to make it tie? Thanks from learning how to sew,

I've sewn a few of these with elastic and they've turned out great! Unfortunately, the typical sizes I've made don't all fit. I made a medium for me, which fit, but the large for my husband was too tight. I've been asked to make quite a few and want to make sure they fit each person. Am I doing something wrong or should measurements fit average person (large for man, etc.)

Step 6: Sew up the Mask - 12:04
    Step 7: Add the Wire - 14:18

I'm a medical assistant, I recently won my battle against uterine cancer. Having had surgery 4 weeks ago my immune system is compromised. Going to work and not having the proper equipment to protect ourselves is the scariest thing. A lot of people have said "just stay home" but helping people is what we do. I can't thank you enough. This has inspired so many people to step up and make mask in a time when we need them most.

Heather, if you can get out, buy elastic hair bands. We have a “dollar tree” and I bought up as many as I could of $1.00 packages of folded elastic head bands, getting as much as 12 bands for $1. You can get up to 3 mask with one headband if you make it fo over the ears. Also, get the elastic ponytail holders. $1 for up to 36 ponytail holders which can give you one over the ear elastic (because they are much shorter but perfect for smaller masks). So think about it, you get a rainbow of vibrant colored elastic for extremely cheap. I live in Palm Coast, Florida and I just started making mine to get to healthcare workers in our areas and neighbors. Thanks for making yours!

Love this - Thank You! I'm a homeschool mom and a memo was sent out to our co-op group with a request from our local medical groups needing masks. I'm going to put this link in along with added "plus" that it would be a great "home-ec" lesson and/or distribution would help esp. our Jrs and Srs with their volunteer hours! Win/Win for all - our kids get credits they need as well as serving the community in some needed capacity during this time when we are all stuck in our homes and the medical community will get needed supplies they are short of currently!

Thank you so much!! I love this. I wish I could post a picture of the ones I’ve made. Absolutely love it!! For those of you having problems, follow the link to her blog. I followed the instructions and watched the video. I then proceeded to slowly make 1. It came out perfect!! Now I’m just cranking them out! So be patient with yourself, listen to some nice music, and take it slow. The results are great and you’ll see how easy they are to make after you make your first one. Also, I cut them by hand and skipped the machine (cut tons of fabric while watching tv) so to make it easier on myself, I traced the pattern onto thick cardboard chipboard to make myself a thick pattern. Tracing with a washable pen was super fast this way. I also wrote on my pattern where the nose & mouth should go and the straps to keep me from getting confused as I was cutting a lot of fabric. Hope this helps. This is my favorite pattern of all I attempted to make so I’m sticking with it :) stay safe everyone

I took Jennifer's advice and slowed down the speed of the video. You need to change the inner sewing line to draw instead of cut. I clicked on the eye icon on the right menu to hide these because I do not need the inner sewing line. She was layering a draw/cut to use with a fabric pen.

I get the change the line to draw part (although if I hadn’t followed the video I wouldn’t have known that was the inner line) but I can’t figure out how many of the layers need that line changed and what happened that made that 3rd dark green layer disappear and why don’t we need it.

  • @hollysmacmcreynolds6472
    @hollysmacmcreynolds6472 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Two things I added: 1. on the top piece only, I hand pressed the seam to the right and top stitched it down. This makes it look much better AND adds a seal on the top layer at the seam . 2. I also took some 100% cotton batting and cut out 4 pieces with and sewed them like a mask piece. I turned it inside out and further over stuffed it with cotton face makeup remover pads. This created a "Ham" for pressing the front seams. I did this because I somehow lost my tailor's ham in my move here last summer. This actually is much better because it fits the shape of the mask piece. I believe in anything to streamline sewing. BTW thanks for the best directions ever.

If that's a problem then take the time and effort to do the research and put in the time to create the pattern yourself. I gave my email and look at the ads freely and willingly to support her for the time and effort that I don't have to put into creating all these awesome patterns that others are charging money for.

The T-shirt fabric is recommended by Cambridge University when you are making a mask without a filter. One layer would be T-shirt and one layer would be cotton. Otherwise, you wouldn't need it, and would use just cotton fabric! Thanks for clarifying that! 😄

This takes the place of the elastic >>>>>>I have a wonderful idea to share here.........You might not have lycra, but I had a lots of left over pieces, so I cut stretchy strips and was knotting them to make ties to sort out my lace, fabric, craft things and more to keep from using rubber bands that decay....... I noticed that when I tied the knots that the lycra rolls up very pretty and is very soft and real stretchy.......my friend used one in her mask, since JoAnn's was out of elastic........and it works better and is lots more comfortable and lasting........I ordered lycra online a long time ago......I would say a grey or white is best. I hope this helps some of you out there giving so much of yourselves during this crisis.......(Also you can cut the strips with a rotary cutter).

@@JenniferMaker -- actually it cost lots less, and I have tried about 7 kinds of lycra, different prints, colors and whatever and all but one rolls up in on itself making a very neat pretty cord looking roll........I had only one piece that did not roll up on itself to make that cute little tight roll.......my friend got lycra at JoAnn's for around 7.00 a yard, enough to make hundreds and hundreds of the elastic looking rolls......I hope this helps someone that is working frantically to help nursing homes and businesses.......

Such a good idea and a very informative video. I don't subscribe to many people on You Tube but I enjoy you. You are genuine and the real deal. Many are out trying to make a buck in these trying times but you are out on social media helping to show us how we can help our communities. Bless you, Jennifer!

What about a mask that you don't have to sew, but just cut out, Jennifer? We have a pattern for one of those here: 😍

These are wonderful, thank you for sharing and giving of your time to take care of our front line health care workers. You know, this makes me think about WWII and how the home front did whatever was necessary to take care of the front line!

World War II was a little before my time 😂, but I hope I would have been able to help out then, too! We all worked together then to defeat a foe, and we can work together now! 😄

Me and my mom are going to make these for our family that is running errands for everyone else... If my mom were to make me model the face mask on line for her I would look as happy and your daugther did in your video. We cracked up because she looked so serious. Probably because we could not see her big smile Thank You so much for this tutorial, if I get good I will keep making as many as I can. God Bless Everyone...

@@JenniferMaker S nice to hear from you. I wanted to let you know that (like toilet paper) there is a run on the elastic and it's no where to be found, so I am glad your tutorial called for the ribbon ties. thanks!

Thank you so much! Finally a way to construct the pocket for the filter that is simple to sew and, to insert! I made a few revisions of my own and have finally gotten the mask I was looking for!
