  • My Mondeo 2004 Mk3 3.0 litre V6 is making the "Moosing" noise from the engine bay. There is a lot of conflicting information on the cause so let's get to the bottom of it in this video.

While working at a dealer, replaced dozens of IAC valves on the old 2.5L V6 for the same reason. I always called it the fog horn.

That is a lovely looking car m8. I had the same intermittent Mooosing sound on my 1998 V6 Cougar a few years back.
I think various factors cause this.... my Idle Valve is fine, even checked the resistance of it with a multimeter and it was well within the values.
I found the inlet hose to the valve was split..... I replaced it with a simple piece of coolant hose of similar diameter and it has not Moooosed since.
My fix probably won't work for everyone but it's worth checking.
    Great video, thank you.

It’s the Mondeo mating call, happens all through summer. Had loads of 220s, always moosed and nearly always been the AIC valve, only other thing that caused it was a load of split vac pipes. Nice to see this on the channel

Can't understand why people on the forums made such a big deal of this. It is well dcumented failure on Ford's. Inside the valve there is a set of plastic bellows. They cracking over time allowing engine vaccuum to force the IAC open (this pulls up the RPM). When this happens, the ECU commands the solenoid to close the valve to achieve target idle speed. This rapid opening and closing is what causes the noise. If you look at the IAC duty cycle on a scan tool, you will notice it is way too high (perhaps around its maximum 60% in the case of Fords). You should clamp the old one in a vice and pull it apart with some pliers of overindulgence. You will see the failure internally.

I've got the 3.0l ghia x version, remapped to an alleged 268 bhp, de catted and de boxed exhaust.( i don't actually believe it is 268bhp, but it is very quick. lol) couldn't find a good st 220 in my area, so i jumped on this when it came up with only 80k on it. I haven't regretted it! anyway, I've had it under FORScan and my air idle valve is showing under test working at 64%. every now and then i hear a low moosing sound, thanks to your video I now know the two are connected. Awesome and ty!

The other day i was driving my ST220 V6 at about 40mph when a horrible moaning noise started, I thought a wheel bearing had gone. I slowed down very quickly, thinking GOD ive bought a LEMON of a 3.0Lt V6 ST220. I gently pulled away again and the noise was gone? Whats going on??? It can't be a wheel bearing.
Then I saw your video :)
Thank you for finding the cause of the moosing noise.
Im VERY releaved its an easy fix. I will be getting an Idle air control valve soon.

The anti moose pipe is the proper fix. FYI, my car was one of the first in the UK to suffer from this, the dealer had no clue and Ford technical got involved. They came up with a resonator pipe to fix the issue on the 2.5 V6. It fixed the problem in cold weather but it would come back when hot! Replacing the IACV will fix it for a while but it will come back, trust me!

Sometimes wear and tear in more than one component in a system can work in tandem to cause odd problems. Any of those components, on their own, will be "within tolerance" but the system as a whole can be affected if there is wear across the components as a whole. Which is why, sometimes, just replacing any one component out of two or three can "cure" the issue, and is why different people can claim different things have fixed it for them.
Not sure if that makes sense, I can't really explain it better right now.
P.S. "liter" is the US English spelling.

IAC valves are merely little valves that allow for air flow adjustments when idling. So you could possibly spray carb cleaner into it and clean it out and may work fine again. There really isn't much to them. The use them to adjust the RPMs when your air conditioning turns on and off and such things like that to keep the engine RPMs level.

I've just bought meself a lovely mondeo st tdci 2.2 love the car in performance blue but getting some juddering when braking been told tracking is well out 🤷‍♂️I see quite a few about in skeggy

    • @retrorestore
      @retrorestore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Juddering wouldn't be the tracking Bill. If the tracking was out, you'd get uneven tyre wear and it would pull to the side when you let go of the steering wheel when driving in a straight line.

The EGR is only a temporary fix for the moosing it will be back I suppose it's part of ST life now after 15 years and a large collection of EGR valves lol

Am I gullten for punishment lol.😂👍 Ach all good content mate. I hope you get it fixed. Funny cause John lad had about 10 of these motors never had no problems with them just the alternators and brake pads and a bit of fade probably down to old fluid. 👍🔧🛠

retrorestore I had a mondeo Ghia x 36 thousand miles from new 1 owner garaged mint condition couldn’t give it away it cost 28 grand new no one wanted it just old fashioned drank the juice road tax was a killer 320 a year ok for weekends or long journeys my electric seats packed up and ford wanted a grand to fix terrible joke of a company

Nice and easy fix Martin. Maybe the moosing 🐮 was the real reason why the previous owner sold the car. 😊
