  • A wonderful 10 miles of walking, on a very pleasant Spring day near the Kent coast. This variant of the walk starts and finishes at Sandling station, which is about 10 minutes (half a mile) from the GPX track above Hayne Tunnel, on the former Sandgate branch line. It also goes in an anti-clockwise direction, counter to the walk author's original suggestion.
Lunch was had in the grounds of St.Stephen's church, Lympne, where there are some wonderful views across the marsh to the sea. A bistro is also a possibility in the Castle next door, apparently.
There were some very muddy paths about today, and the narrow one descending from Lympne to the Royal Military Canal (Path HE319 to be exact) was particularly treacherous, with slippy mud, or rubber mats, underfoot and barbed wire on one side and brambles on the other. An accident waiting to happen!
Otherwise, a very good, varied walk with the welcome sound of the harbingers of Spring - Chiff Chaffs!

I'm amazed that people aren't placing their"likes" for the video which is very detailed and useful. So much work, yet no single gesture of gratitude, apart from my "like". Sad, really.

      Thanks.
They do, as I get to see them, but maybe the public don't. I don't mind anyway, nor with increasing viewing numbers, as these videos are made primarily for my own memories, for viewing when I can no longer walk☹️The updated ones also make for an interesting social history, methinks.
      Thanks for watching😉👍

Thank you so much amib..... and well done for negotiating those tricky sections ! But what a fascinating walk, dripping with history and surely one of your best ! A tantalising glimpse of spring and those views from Lympne looked stunning. What a place, that church tower looked more forbidding than the castle ! By the way, think Saltwood Castle was the home of Alan Clark, the controversial Tory MP and diarist. Thank you so much, really enjoyed this

Spot on re Alan Clark! Well done!
I've reported that path to The Ramblers down that way; they'll be aware of it, I'm sure.
      Thanks for watching again😉👍

Excellent walk and commentary in one of my favourite areas, you were lucky with the weather and I now feel ready for spring with your bird sightings, you just need the new boots …..

      Appreciate that Richard.
New boots on the way, though I might not make it out this week☹️
Agreed! A very pleasant area, as are many pockets of Kent, despite the urban conurbations about.
      Thanks for watching😉👍

Another great walk, thanks very much.Shame about all that boggy mud walking with your leaky boots, hopefully you get that sorted.

Thanks Dave. Boots are being replaced under warranty, so no walk this week as I don't have a spare pair☹️Hopefully, next week🤞
      Thanks for watching again😉👍

Know that feeling re boots. Soles peeled off both just outside Lewes last year, although I’d had them years and walked hundreds of miles!

      Sorry to hear that Liz.
Mine are just within the 1 year warranty, by days, and so will be replaced, luckily. They're 'Keen' boots, which I favour for the extra width, very comfortable out of the box, but, clearly, not that durable. At £2/week cost, they suit my requirements👍

Pleased you’re back to regular walking, hope the weather holds out.

Not quite Liz; I think I'll struggle to get out this week as the leaky boots I referred to have got to go back for an exchange and I don't have a spare pair currently😒And it's Easter the following week, but, yes, otherwise, weather permitting, there'll be some continuity henceforth🤞
      Thanks for watching again😉👍

I know the people at Saltwood Castle, yeh its a private residence, they do have car shows etc though thru the summer

Thanks for that input. We've established who previously lived there (the Clarkes), so that completes it.

Aside from age-related, all good Shay, thanks. Hope you're well and recovering from that bit of snow over there a few weeks back?
      Thanks for watching again😉👍

Live in Hythe myself. Anyone else doing this walk if you carry on another half a mile away from the castle there is a better footpath that takes you down through the zoo park to the canal. Just depends if you have time to add a mile on to the walk.

Thanks for that Joseph. That would appear to be the Saxon Shore Way; is it accessible at all hours, running through the zoo? I'd guess so.
      Thanks for watching😉👍
