Stevie, not sure what you've been watching, but Berhalter's been trash for 5.5 years. Seb's right, he pulls the fire alarm at half-time, goes to some ridiculous 5-in-the-back setup, taking Gio off for CCV. Berhalter's been rigidly playing a 4-3-3 against all-comers for 5.5years, so the players have no experience playing this 5-in-the back. That's on Berhalter, not the players. GGG was fired from the Swedish 2nd Division for lack of offense. What have we seen from the USMNT under him - lack of offense. He was a middling MLS coach. The players and the fans deserve better.

People resorting to the typical "should have done what would have worked." The truth is no matter what he did in the game, all people care about was the end result. The manager may not be having the best time recently, but you can't blame him for these results. Individual mistakes and lack of talent is what got them knocked out. Whether or not he gets sacked depends on who is available. Some people think they want anything else and before you know it, we have a revolving door of managers circus. Typical occurrence in teams that think they are better than they are. Scapegoat the manager and stroke the ego of players.

    • @vex355u_fan

@@turkeydano2106 why can't he be blamed for the results? If the outcome of a match is solely determined by the players, then why bother paying a manager $2.2M/year? Not-withstanding how bad Berhalter's been, national team coaches rarely get 2 cycles. Why was he rehired after the "exhaustive search" after his first contract ended? Your "The manager may not be having the best time recently" is laughable. He has NEVER had "good times". Sacked from second division Swedish division. Barely had a level record in MLS. Fails into the USMNT coaching gig because his brother handed him the job. But yeah, sure, it's not his fault. We should keep him for the next 20 years.

I don't think Stevie cares one bit, the point he makes is that maybe they don't have success because they aren't that good. Sometimes you have to realize that you are a frog in a well in concacaf, but until you have real talent you aren't ready to compete with the best yet. Is it really the manager holding them back? Will things actually change if the managers changes? I suspect not. He has no magical wand to make players perform better, he is picking probably the best players and putting them in their positions. I don't know how deep the tactics go, but they were competitive at the world cup under him and have been qualifying consistently. If they could get a top tier manager with more experience then sure, have a go, but otherwise you are just throwing people in a fire that will never go out.

Against Panama, Berhalter decided to play a low-block for the entire second half, taking off Gio Reyna -- the one really creative and best passing player on the team -- for an extra center back at home against Panama, inviting Panama to attack. He also took off Balogun for Pepi, further limiting our counter-attacking threat that would have kept Panama honest, who after losing against Uruguay might have not been so eager to push numbers forward to win and risk getting burned on a counter-attack, losing, and thus being eliminated from the tournament altogether. That tactical idiocy and cowardice has defined Berhalter's 5 years in charge.
So absolutely Berhalter is culpable. I know the non-Americans of ESPN FC hate the hype for the USMNT, but this squad's potential is unknown, but under Berhalter, they are definitely far less than the sum of the parts. That has been clear for years. If we were a serious footballing nation, we would have never hired him in the first place, never rehired him, and immediately fired him after getting grouped and not be debating it now.

Even with the US not being great Berhalter is still under performing and needs to go. Even with a man down they where a goal up as well. No matter the club minutes. He is club teammates with Griffin Dorsey both starting on a relatively middling MLS team, and they are roughly equivalent as players at different positions and are the same age. Griffin Dorsey has zero caps for the USMNT. None. The USMNT should beat Panama at home by multiple goals, and, quite frankly if playing well, should already be ahead by the time Weah picked up his red card. The talent gap is roughly equivalent of Newcastle vs Plymouth Argyle. At home. GGG has lost to this team three different times now.

It is absolutely ridiculous that Mr. Salazar was shouting down Mr. Nicol. Stevie played over 300 matches for Liverpool!! Salazar played NAIA or NCAA D3 soccer?! He needs to be a bit more respectful. On top of that, Mr. Nicol was 100% correct.
Weah is not a defender, he was not a midfielder. If you are going to lose a player to a red card, a forward is the most fortunate place to lose a player. As Steve said, the defense was intact and the midfield was intact. There was no need to change or shuffle personnel like if a defender or a central midfielder was ejected. From that perspective, it is absolutely reasonable for Berhalter to hold until half-time and evaluate changes from there.

Just because he played for Liverpool does not make him right.
The hard indisputable fact is the team has not improved in five years with Berhalter. And this is hardly the first time his tactics haven’t worked.
It’s time to try something new. There’s nothing to lose.
Every other professional team does this and coaches expect it. Sometimes a team just needs a new voice and new ideas. It doesn’t necessarily mean the person being fired is a bad coach or could not succeed somewhere else.

@@RJM1972 Nope, you're wrong. Nice try, but your reading comprehension needs to improve. I never said Stevie was right because of his experience. I said he deserved more respect and should not have been shouted over.
As you should note, the statement that Stevie was correct was "On top" of the fact he should have been treated more respectfully. I then went on to provide further explanation as to why Salazar was incorrect in the particular point he was making.
Finally, I agree that sometimes a change needs to be made to freshen things up. However, I do feel that in today's cultural the eject button is pushed too soon. Coaches are barely given time to effect change. Arteta is an example of a coach given more time than many had wanted. I do not have an opinion one way or the other regarding Berhalter.

02:28 I'd like to point out to Seb. The captain and the top striker for Uruguay team are not guaranteed starter for their respective club teams. Heck, the top scorer for Uruguay plays for a team in Liga MX. And you freely admitted it's impossible for USA players to beat Uruguay. So it's really not a question of whether they played for their club or not, the fact of the matter is, USMNT players sucked. They played badly. That's it.

  • @lecannois
    @lecannois 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

It's fairly common to move to a 531 when down to 10 men. It depends on whether you have better defenders and fullbacks or midfielders. If the midfield is better, you play a 441. Regardless, an attacking player is taken out You pack it in and play counter attacks. I agree that you cannot judge a manager in a game where his team goes down to 10 mean after 18 minutes.

It is ABSOLUTELY Berhalter fault with a dash of fault from the Reyna family as well.
Berhalter is playing tactics and formations that don’t apply to the talent on the roster. This should be an attacking forward team that doesn’t adjust until too late yet we have a team relying on the long ball and adjusting in the final 15-20.
This is a better squad than the Dempsey/Altidore/Donovan era but they are coached far worse

Agree Berhalter ain’t all that but neither is the golden gen. None of the big names stepped up on the field when it was do or die time. Pepi, Pulisic, Reyna etc. were non-factors. You can argue that coaches put players in positions to succeed but we’ve seen Berhalter do that to his credit against lesser teams. Weah got the red and the big names didnt show up after that. Not really on Berhalter imo. Reality check for this talent pool. still a few levels below proper footballing nations.

Panama 🇵🇦 has 5 players who could make the USA 🇺🇸 bench and possibly challenge to start. Adalberto "Coco" Carrasquilla is the most underrated midfielder in Concacaf and could start at the #8 or be an option as a backup #10 behind Gio. Eric Davis would be the immediate backup LB behind Jedi. Michael Murillo would be starting at RB for us with the injury to Sergino Dest. Jose Cordoba could start at CB for the USA right now. Jose Farjado could be another another option at the #9 behind Balogun. I respectfully disagree with Seb's take on Panama's talent.
