  • We took a day to #travel to SE #Missouri to scout out some #boondocking sites in the Mark Twain National Forest, and along the Ozark National Scenic Riverway. We had an eventful day that included many miles of #backroad driving, seeing wild horses, a water crossing, and losing our drone.
    The coordinates of the places we found, along with the timestamps, are listed below:
    2:07 - Courtois Creek 37.92842, -91.10197
    3:35 - Timberline Lake 37.87908, -91.05357
    5:10 - Akers Upper Access 37.37588, -91.56202
    5:58 - Sinking Creek 37.30384, -91.41467
    8:31 - Unknown - Down CR 19-225
    9:45 - Grassy Creek 37.24513, -91.35151
    10:57 - Boat Ramp 37.24122, -91.29514
    11:43 - Jerktail Landing 37.22916, -91.30874
    ...and, if anyone is interested in a treasure hunt, here are the last known coordinates of the drone:
    37.306097, -91.415316

      I can't find the grassy creek site you went to @midwest journeys

    • @MidwestJourneys
      @MidwestJourneys  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cyrusluke1828 It's been a couple years ago, so hopefully it is still there. The easiest way to get there would be to come in on CR 19-227, and you will take that until you are pretty close to the river. You will come to an opening with a house and some buildings, and right by there, you will find another short road that turns toward the river. It runs alongside a field for a moment then back into the woods, and to the campsite. If you put the coordinates into Google maps, and look at the satellite view, you will be able to see the small road going to that campsite. Hope this helps!

    I was surprised to see so many people at these boondocking sites! I also wasn't expecting a road of any kind, so it's nice to see some fairly maintained unpaved roads. My son and I usually visit campgrounds, but I've been toying with the idea of dispersed camping. Thanks for sharing.

      I think dispersed camping is becoming more and more popular, especially as solar, and other off grid electrical systems are becoming more affordable. The problem around Missouri is that the spots are not real well known. Honestly, we still have not dispersed camped in MO (other than backpacking). We went out scouting when we made this video, but never took out our camper at the time to stay in any of the spots. Two rigs later, and we have been boondocking in several other states, but not here in our home state. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@MidwestJourneys Ha, that's funny. I think MO's got a lot to offer as far as camping goes, and the night skies are pretty good, especially around Mark Twain. We're considering Sam A. Baker for this year, but I'll do a bit more research on other sites.

      No problem! Let us know if you stay in one of these spots. We’d like to hear actual camping experiences. We’re hoping to head down this fall to try out one or two of them.

    Wow! That was quite the day. From the looks of things I don’t think the Silver Shadow would make it down some of those roads. 🙁 Stocks about the drone, sorry. That water crossing was cool though!

    • @MidwestJourneys
      @MidwestJourneys  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of those roads were definitely rough. On the plus side, we figured out there was a back way in to the Grassy Creek site, so the water crossing wouldn't be required. 🤷🏻‍♂️ And, Tammy talked me into going ahead and replacing the drone, so I got a new one out of the deal, even though I would have preferred not to have to replace it. 😁

      Nice! We went a little further south by Parole Lake that day, but then were running out of time, since we wanted to also hit the Current River area. Unfortunately, we never made it back down there this year to actually do some camping. I've done some backpacking in that area along the Ozark Trail, but have never taken the camper down there. We're hoping to accomplish that sometime in the spring.

    I noticed you don’t have any recovery gear mounted to your vehicle. Cost comparative, it only takes one time to pay for gear in comparison to a tow truck in the woods.

    • @MidwestJourneys
      @MidwestJourneys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will completely agree with you, and we really need to get some. That was the first time that we were that far off the beaten path. I will definitely get something before we try to pull the trailer down roads like this. I just saw something from a company in KS that makes basically a folding version of Maxx Traxx. I may have to check those out, just because I can toss them in the car.

      I was so cringing when he made the water crossing, alone, with no recovery gear!

      So were we. 😳 We have some big changes coming soon in regards to our tow vehicle, so we won’t be in that situation again. 😁 We’re really excited to share in our videos later this year.

      @MidwestJourneys  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I really wish we didn't have to do that, but we now carry gloves and trash bags wherever we travel. It makes us feel good knowing that the area is as clean as possible for the next person.
