    Everyone's been raving about the Tascam DR-10L. I've had mine for a few months but just recently started using it regularly, and I have not been impressed with the audio at all. This explains why and how to clean it up. Well done man, thanks. Btw your other audio source sounds super crispy 👌🏼

    Lower down mid frequencies - is the answer to make lavalier microphones sound a little bit cleaner and professional. Thank you Oliver!

  • @Nighthawkinlight
    @Nighthawkinlight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Lowering your lows can rescue your vocals when poorly recorded, but the best quality improvement I've found with lav mics is to move them way further down your chest than what you've got there. Move it another 4-6 inches lower. You'll lose that throat rumble and it will sound perfectly natural.

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      NightHawkInLight I do agree, but too far down and you'll lose a meaningful signal--as most all lavs have an omnidirectional polar pattern.

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, it's a balance. The mic I use tends to record hot so I have no trouble moving it as far away as I like.

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      NightHawkInLight which mic do you use? My Countryman EMW is excellent with high-end clarity, and I will tend to use it when the mic needs to be concealed under clothing--further muffling the sound.

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JK MIC-J 044 on the recommendation of TH-cam reviews. I've been happy with it. My recent videos are recorded all with that mic with minimal post processing besides levels and some compression.

      No way! I couldn't imagine getting a good sound from such a cheap mic - I will have to check that one out.

    I record dialogue with the Rode Filmmaker Wireless Lav mic. I recently shot a short film and was having a hard time with equing the dialogue tracks to make them sound more clearer. I went through tons of youtube tutorials and tried what they did and it didn't work. I used the technique you showed in this video and it worked like a charm.

  • @ramymelhem

    you could automatically cut the low frequencies in the menu of the tascam so that it removes them while recording. If you set it up properly in the menu settings then you get very crisp audio.

    • @bryanauer
      @bryanauer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      agree! I keep low cut on always! It seems to even clean up the clarity way above 2-12k as well...

    I've the joys of less than quiet neighbours who make it trickydoing anything TH-cam during the day. So as to not have to be totally nocturnal, I went with a lav mic and experienced the hateful, resonating, boomy, but muddy, sound issues you describe. Bought different lavs, some were less bad but none have sounded good.
    Hopefully now I can take your info and figure how to use it in Audacity... Thanks!

    I primarily use this mic as backup on a wedding day, but I've found that when vows or toasts are being projected over a speaker, even when it's a good distance away, this lav likes to pick up that audio more than the person's natural voice... have you run into this issue at all? I've tested it against my RodeLink wireless lavs in the same situations and the Rodes perform much better...

    @mfreeman313 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very helpful, thanks. I'm sort of an audio apeman, my understanding's pretty primitive, but for sure I can hear muddiness. As a general approach to gaining more clarity you've shown this works and I'll definitely apply it when I have to use my mid-level mics. Thanks! Actually just got a DR-10L so I can let my talent off the leash but this will be broadly applicable.

    Thanks for this informative video Oliver. At what point in the process described in this video would you apply adaptive noise reduction (in either Premiere Pro or Audition CC) to remove a low level of noise on a single vocal track, if it was needed (i.e. for low level of ambient noise/hiss)? Before or after EQ adjustments? I ask because I'm trying to improve a vocal track recorded on a Sennheiser lav in a small, boxy room with a high ceiling.

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question and I've heard many opinions on noise reduction signal chain, and where exactly to perform it. Personally, I reduce first. Before compression especially. Simply because compression (and EQ to an extent) will manipulate the noise floor over time, and therefore I want a more exact and consistent print of everything to reduce the maximal amount of noise. Make sense?

    When you use two lavs and a boom for recording dialogue bet. 2 people, which dialogue do u actually edit in post? The lav audio or the boom audio? Which one of those audios is actually used?

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Boom, most every time - as it will typically be a better, fuller sound. The only reason to include a lav in recording is for backup in case of a boom mic failure.

      mark shirley go look for either a graphic or parametric EQ plugin in FCPX and apply the same principles of subtracting the low mids and you should be all set!

      @markshirley01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oliver J Hughes thanks - in the UK the Tascam DR10 doesn't come with a lav mic. Could you recommend a good value lav mic with the locking screw.

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Are you referring to the Tascam DR-10X? That's the British one that allows for a larger, handheld microphone (and it's not included). The DR-10L has a 3.5mm port for a lavalier microphone and to my knowledge it does ship with the lav mic included all over the world. If you need a lav mic by itself though, I really like both Rode and Countryman lav mics.

    Theres a recommendation to use countryman b3 or sennheiser me 2 instead of the one included in the tascam. Does it make a dramatic difference or i can get by with post like what u do here

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can for sure get by with the included Tascam mic - it's not bad. But of course your quality will go up with a better lav!

    • @qtben17
      @qtben17 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oliver J Hughes which better lav do u recommend? Thanks for answering

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, personally I haven't used the ME2, I'm sure it's great. I would definitely recommend the Countryman B3, love it's sound and it's outstanding form factor, *BUT* keep in mind the Countryman isn't compatible with the Tascam mic input. Sennheiser is with their 3.5mm jacks, but Countryman has the 3-pin mini connection.

    Would any filmmaker ever use their camera without monitor to know what they're shooting?? So why do they commit the same crime with audio, & record their audio without monitoring it?? Madness!!
    This is why I highly recommend buying the Sony UWP-D11 wireless (if on a tight low budget, otherwise go Lectro/Wisycom/AudioLtd/Zaxcom/etc) rather than a Tascam DR10L.
    As for the lav mic itself, the Oscar SoundTech lav is a good low budget upgrade from the stock mic if the likes of a Sanken COS-11D is out of your reach.

    • @mattalt1979

      safety track of -12db does the trick 99.9% of the time. people dont want to risk wireless with the space being filled up more and more and connection drops. Lectro/zaxcom I was considering but at the end of the day most people aren't running them into zoom f8's or sound devices. Theres a huge gap from getting an okay wireless system and a good one in price so thats my dilemma.

    You can't just look to the spectrum to see what's going on. Mix with your ears, not your eyes !
    A diagram do'esnt tell you anything about the sound being good or bad, your ears do.
