Matt I love DR-10L! One question I have is how you deal with the auto levels. Do you use them? I think from what you said you do. Auto level seems to work pretty well, but sometimes if the pastor takes pauses in between sentences, the auto level quickly turns up the volume and when he speaks loudly it clips and I almost never am able to use the normal version, and have to rely on the -6db version. I remember from kraig adams that you can change the sensitivity settings via micro sd and some software? But was just curious how you battle these problems and if you have changed the settings on it? Thanks :)
Have you seen the DR-10CS? They're illegal in the States. lol But they Are the Dr-10 for your Sennheiser system! It works like a redundant recorder in case the Sennheiser looses signal.
You are a God for this video! Tascam owes you a BIG BAG because I’m a new wedding filmmaker who just bought two of these from Amazon just because of this video.
Quite literally yesterday I was running sound on a bigger production, and we had an issue where the client had to go deep inside a building where we legally couldn't follow with cameras. Producers wanted audio from the talent but it was too far for the wireless lavs ---- cue the Tascam DR-10L, yet again saving the day for me and the whole production.
My DR-10L has saved multiple wedding videos! When the wireless mic, or handheld mic, or desk feed, fails or spikes ... this little baby just keeps on recording. I now use for all TH-cam vlogs on the road, AND all my online courses in my studio.
If you slide up to record it will turn on and start recording. That way you don’t have to slide it on then slide it to record :). Love these. Used them on my last 4 weddings ! So good!
I just ordered 4 of them from Amazon with this link. You get 2 that includes Micro SD card 32gb and 2 Tascam TH-02 Headphones for only 349.00. If it wasn't for this video, I wouldn't have bought this. Great video. Great review. Thank you.
Have been using this baby’s since day 1!!! Main source of audio for every wedding!! Honestly we put it on every toaster even if we’re plugged into the DJ system.
I own 3 and have shot several gigs with them. Havent failed me yet. The dual record feature has saved me a few times when people suddenly get loud and the signal clips. Love love love these litte doo dads.
Hey MATT, I alway reference your video for the best settings on the Tascam 10L.. thank you for that. but I lost the last 15 minutes of a very important recording because I didnt know how to shut the recorder off... & Then replay.. I had to take the battery out to stop it & that was stupid and what lost my last 15 minutes of recording. Do you have a video to show start stop record, playback? thank you...
Thanks for the info! I was on the fence about buying it but your video totally convinced me! When you lifted your beard up it blew my mind! lol Just bought it through your B&H link! :)
Hey Matt! love your videos. I just picked up one of the tascams and was playing around with it. I noticed when I was using it I could hear a lot of ruffling of my clothes in the playback from even just normal movement and activity. Is there way to limit this? Looks like when you are using it in these video you are moving around a bit but i dont hear any sort of interference picked up from the mic.
Hey! I think the iPhone Rode Mic is a good option, but I really like that the DR-10L mic screws in and that the DR-10L can record a backup track. I don't believe the Rode Mic can do either of those things.
Hi Matt! I bought one of these guys along with a dr-40 to hook up to the DJ’s audio. I have my first wedding in a couple weeks and I’m wondering if I can get by with using the DR-40 on the officiant by using a ZLR lav mic? What are your thoughts? Do I have to use phantom power if I use a lav mic into the DR 40 and is that bad to do? Thanks for all the great videos!
Hey Pedro! The shotgun version would work well for recording natural sound at an event, but I would really prefer the dr-10L for recording audio of someone speaking etc.
I have two of them myself, one black and one white, that way I can camo them in with the bride and groom for my wedding work. Love them! The firmware update is great too so you have the MP3 option if need be as well as expanded dual recording range
When do you start the recording? or do you just keep it recording from when you put it on the couple and forget about it? If the latter, wouldnt that be a problem in regards to how to sync it to the video, basically a 4-5 hour audio clip?
Not really. If you mic up the groom, you would only be leaving the mic on him for maybe 1 to 1.5 hours in 99% of weddings. Just put the mic on him before the ceremony, and take it off afterwards. After that syncing can be done pretty easily with Premiere's syncing feature, or just scrubbing through the audio file and finding the vows (you're only really going to be using the groom's mic for the vows) and syncing it manually. It's the same thing really with the officiant's mic, except there is more usable audio. I couldn't really ever see a scenario in which you would need to leave a mic on a person for 4-5 hours on a wedding.
Please guys use Plural Eyes it works like a charm, just stuff out your footage in timeline, put the master audio from Tascam dr-10L, then it will snych the footage for you, in a minimal time than manually synching each video, I've done that before, with plural eyes, synching has reduce to 5-10 minutes in a 3-6 hours Timeline with over 300-500 Footages from 4 cameras. Its price is really worth it.
I do gardening videos for TH-cam and use an old camera (Canon XF100). I've always had a wireless lav mic with a receiver plugged into the camera and never had to sync a separate audio file. I did see your video about doing that in Premiere, but do you also need a regular mic plugged into the camera for proper syncing? Or do you record the video without sound and then use the DR10L for the audio only? I just ordered one of these to replace my Comica wireless receiver/mic, but now sure how to best do this.
I have 2 of these units and you're right, they're absolutely incredible! If you think the battery life is good already, try sticking some Panasonic Eneloop Pro AAAs in them, you'll be blown away with the difference. Great video as always Matt! Love your work!
Hey Matt, great video! I have three of these myself and have been playing with the settings for the better part of the year. So you are saying that you use Auto Level, Limiter, and Dual Record -6?!
Hey Matt! I was doing some reading on upgrading sound equipment this morning, and lo&behold, your channel came up. After watching your videos, I'm about to buy the two pack deal on the DR-10L... but I had a question! The thigh holster you recommended is out of stock, with no ETA on restock... Do you have a secondary recommendation? Thanks so much!!!
Isn't Awesome when NOT one person gives a thumbs down?!? Love this! Great Job. And thank you very very much for ALL you very helpful, concise, thorough tutorials (especially on editing) and gear reviews coming from a user point of view. With the quality videos you put up pon TH-cam, you deserve way more subscriptions!
Right on Matt. I love mine! I agree though... the battery life is much shorter than advertised. I've had mine go off several times in longer sessions. I guess Lithium High Capacity Batteries would do better in long recordings than the Amazon ones you showed in the video.
I purchased one and the lav and portability is amazing. I had to purchase one for a groom that wore his dress blues. The lav was sitting basically under his dress blues and yet the audio was still captured beautifully.
Hey Matt, great video as usual! I use 2 DR-10L's for Officiant & Groom. I'm always having problems with echo / reverb when both mics are on, vows. Any help would be SO appreciated!!! Happy New Year!
Hey Matt after ceremony is done ! Do you take the mic recorder from both the bridge and groom? I have a zoom h4n pro, zoom f1 recorder, and a rode wireless go with lav go. It’s that enough to film a wedding ? Or do I need more recorders? Thank you
Matt thanks for the video! I just found out about these. In your opinion, if the camera is capable, is it better to have the wireless mic system go direct to the camera for easier editing? Or is it simple to overlay this audio onto the video track? I've only used lav mics that are recording directly into my video footage.
Hello Matt. I have two of these mics. One of them I notice these loud static pops in the sudio every couple minutes during a recording. Was curious if you had this experience? Not sure if this is the mic or the device.
Matt - you listed every aspect of the DR-10L that I also enjoy. Size, double decibel recording level, power switch, etc. I own two of these, I've used them on every project I've been involved with - and it's the best recorder I have come across. $200 may set some people back - but it shouldn't. This is an amazing value, coupled with that mic it comes with. Totally worth the money!
Yes this thing has been a spectacular addition for me as well! It punches way above its price range in quality and I've used it on corporate gigs as well as youtube videos and it sounds pretty fantastic -- especially if you choose to upgrade to a different lav for not much more.
I own one of those and it,s just simply incredible, I know every time that my audio is safe with that little recorder. I will definitely buy another one with your link Matt before my next wedding shoot. Awesome review btw
Great video Matt! thanks for this VERY useful review. One quick question if you have a moment: How is this DR 10L when dealing with a someone who sweats a lot? Or if it is exposed to rain water during a ceremony? Can such circumstances damage the mic & recorder? thanks :)
Matt! I love your videos. I have a question. I used 3 of those recorders to capture audio of an interview. It sounds great, but when all the tracks are together, there is mic bleed between the different speakers. Is there a quick and simple way to have them mix? Or do I manually have to go and do levels? I’m experimenting with it for some content for my wedding business. I hope you or someone could help. 🙏
Thanks for the honest review. Would this device be good for someone singing, to capture better sound? I'm dealing with a choir in a church where too much reverb, echoing, High tones are destroying captured videos of the choir because of the church's internal building design. Any suggestions or recommendations? Thank you
Hey Matt. Great review! Just subscribed. Love your videos and already purchased some of the things you recommended. I’m just getting into the wedding filming industry and had a question for you if you don’t mind. I in no way consider myself a professional in this but I have done some videos for fun. Anyways I did a wedding for my wife’s friends and everyone thought it was amazing. Granted I could tell there were things that needed work but that was bc of lack of equipment. The only thing I had was my canon T7i and a rode mic. Lol but I now know what all is needed. My question is when I was shooting in low light where the only lights that were on were colored accent ground lights the people ended up looking a little noisy and fuzzy. Not bad but u could tell. I wanna say my iso and other settings were good(can’t remember what they were) but was wondering what you would suggest or recommend doing something different. Thanks
Hey Bobby! I would recommend investing in a good light for receptions. That should help a lot. :) I have several listed on my Kit page in the video description.
I have a question: I usually make bike rides with a large bikers group and make videos, but conditions are always run and gun style. What sound recorder should I get? What do you recommend? I travel with my Sony A7R3, Gopro Hero 6 Black and a Mavic Pro (soon 2 Pro) Thank you, Matt! Your videos are superb!
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson usually no speaking but I do make off bike videos while talking each other on the road, in a gas station, hotel, restaurants, etc. Rode seems a good choice for me.
I am glad you enjoy your DR-10L Matt. I wish I didn't have a bad experience with Tascam and my DR-10L. Customer service is no existent for this company, trying to troubleshoot a card read error was impossible (tried 4 micro sd cards error every time) figured it was the port where it goes in, luckily B& H has a wonderful return policy. Probably would have replaced it with another but the poor support from Tascam made me buy the Zoom F1, a bit more bulky, but out of principle needed to switch companies, a recorder failing 2 days before I have a wedding when I went to test it isn't what I like to have occur.
Hi Matt, I just wanted to leave a comment to say hi. This is the first video I have watched of yours and I LOVED IT, so subscribed straight away. I don't do weddings but I'm sure I will still learn heaps from your videos. Looking forward to getting to know you through your content. Cheers Ben
Hey Matt, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the instamic. I’ve been looking into them and the seem like a great option as well, especially for backup audio.
Hi Matt, nice rewiev, hovever I'm need to upgrade mine general audio recording device. Something with stereo Mic also with auto feature. Until now I had only zoom H1 but I need something better, what is your suggestion?
Matt upping his lighting game🔥🔥 This recorder has changed my life...well maybe not . Lol but it is such a beast of a unit! Makes things so much less stressful 👌🏻
Just an fyi for people purchasing and Matt. If you go to tascams homepage you can download new firmware that provides more features like -12db safety track and mp3 recording. It's a bit odd to install but worth it for some :) Great little device and great video :)
You're psychic! I was wondering about the bride mic'ing, and you responded. I was wondering about syncing the audio and you responded... I think. Will the "settings" video cover any tips/tricks in regards to being efficient when syncing or will it strictly be settings on the device?
Hey Matt, really been enjoying your audio series. Very entertaining and informative :) . Just wondering if you had tried or had thoughts on the Instamic Pro as an alternative to the DR-10 for critical audio you have to get right the first time every time such as weddings?
Hey! I have a dedicated bride mic-ing video coming in the future. I also talk about mic-ing the bride in this video about halfway through: th-cam.com/video/PFWmc9KaPhQ/w-d-xo.html
😁 Hey! This is the best deal I've found for the Tascam DR-10L! Comes with a free SD card and headphones: geni.us/dr10
Matt I love DR-10L! One question I have is how you deal with the auto levels. Do you use them? I think from what you said you do. Thanks :)
I've been using one for the past year and a half. I use it more than my RodeLink lav now.
what are your thoughts on the Rode Smartlav+?
Have you seen the DR-10CS? They're illegal in the States. lol But they Are the Dr-10 for your Sennheiser system! It works like a redundant recorder in case the Sennheiser looses signal.
Yeah I'm sold. I have the F1 and H1n and in the real world... they are so HUGE and SUPER clunky and difficult to hide. Thanks! Buying 2!!
1. Forget weddings, a recorder like this can be used by EVERYONE!
2. Love that beam of light in the background. Such atmosphere!
The Enthusiasm Project I like “1.” Lol
You are a God for this video! Tascam owes you a BIG BAG because I’m a new wedding filmmaker who just bought two of these from Amazon just because of this video.
Glad to help!
I bought one and can't believe how good it works?! Turn it on, have it set to auto - DONE.
Something that just works? I can scarcely believe it
This was an incredibly concise review, great job man!
Thanks dude! 😁
15 min ago I didn't know what the Tascam Dr-10L is and what it does, now I need one. Thanks ;)
If you couldn't legally take a camera In, then likely you couldn't legally record audio either
MAAGIC!!
Guerilla filmmaking, right? =P
Nice. That’s pretty awesome.

Bro!! For real I bought two of these after your recommendation. They’re insanely awesome!
I bought 4 of these and they work like a champ! Small, clips which is really great for ladies and their dresses! You will not be disappointed!
Matt Johnson, do you still use this 4 years later? If not what do you use now?
My DR-10L has saved multiple wedding videos! When the wireless mic, or handheld mic, or desk feed, fails or spikes ... this little baby just keeps on recording. I now use for all TH-cam vlogs on the road, AND all my online courses in my studio.

Love these. Used them on my last 4 weddings ! So good!

Way awesome Matt. It's my go to also. Cheers!
Have been using this baby’s since day 1!!! Main source of audio for every wedding!! Honestly we put it on every toaster even if we’re plugged into the DJ system.
I had a vision of you plugging this into an actual toaster for bread at a wedding.
Matt WhoisMatt Johnson This is exactly what we meant! What do you think we meant?? Need to eat during the wedding day, hence toast 😁
Love this tiny micro powerhouse! Our favorite recorder for sure!
I remember watching your review last year! Been meaning to make one of my own, just took forever hahaha
Great stuff. Looking into getting one. What mic are you using to record this video though? It also sounds great.
Yes they're great! I have 3, two black and one white that I put on the bride. Works Fantastic!!!
Matt. Your video was fun to watch yet provided all the information I needed. I enjoyed it.
just used this on a shoot...I was blown away!
Thanks your review just sold me on buying this :) Used your link to ! Great videos from a fellow youtuber.
I own 3 and have shot several gigs with them. Havent failed me yet. The dual record feature has saved me a few times when people suddenly get loud and the signal clips. Love love love these litte doo dads.
Best review for lav mic across youtube hands down
I have the same dr10l and god I love them! Auto leveling is life saving!
My mouth dropped when you picked up your beard and realized it was with this mic. SOLD. Excellent video.
The light of enlightenment over your head.
Matt is it still the best in the market even after a year?
I still loooooove it! Best I’ve found
@@whoismatt you have got to be the best at responding to comments. i am about to buy one now. just wish i could find a discount code someplace.

Wow, that screw-in jack is a great idea. I always have that issue of plugs coming out all the time with my Zoom H1...
Good review. Pretty informative.
Should use a angled jack
Just got the dr-10x for a handheld mic...have to agree...best recorder ever!
I now own 5 of them.... It is amazing for weddings!
Thanks for the info! I was on the fence about buying it but your video totally convinced me! When you lifted your beard up it blew my mind! lol Just bought it through your B&H link! :)
Tascam is an amazing company!

Ordering this ASAP. Please make the settings video soon so I can be prepared for the next wedding I shoot in 2 weeks. Thanks =)
what do you think about the iPhones Rode mic ? would you recommend this tascam instead ?
Hey! I think the iPhone Rode Mic is a good option, but I really like that the DR-10L mic screws in and that the DR-10L can record a backup track. I don't believe the Rode Mic can do either of those things.
Sennhesier G3 vs Tascam Dr10L What you think? I will buy 1
Do you need to monitor your audio wirelessly? If so get the G3. Otherwise get the dr-10L :)

Excellent Matt! Do you think Tascam shotgun DR10-sg could be a cheaper and reliable option to this lav?
Hey Pedro! The shotgun version would work well for recording natural sound at an event, but I would really prefer the dr-10L for recording audio of someone speaking etc.
Thanks buddy!
I have two of them myself, one black and one white, that way I can camo them in with the bride and groom for my wedding work. Love them! The firmware update is great too so you have the MP3 option if need be as well as expanded dual recording range

I bought one cos of you Matt! saving up for the other 3! waiting anxiously for the video on how to mic the bride! kudos bro!
It's really good to hear you Matt 😉
Hi Matt, I just wanted to leave a comment to say hi.
This is the first video I have watched of yours and I LOVED IT, so subscribed straight away.
I don't do weddings but I'm sure I will still learn heaps from your videos.
Looking forward to getting to know you through your content.
Cheers Ben
I use two to film weddings and they have been fantastic for me. Looking to buy a white one soon for the bride mic. Cheers.
If you have one mic and mic only the groom, do you recommend turning up the levels so you can pickup everyone’s voice? Thanks!
Incredible video, and it sounds like an incredible mic! This video sold me on your channel. Subscribed!
Hey Matt, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the instamic. I’ve been looking into them and the seem like a great option as well, especially for backup audio.
Hey Chris! I like the Instamic, but haven’t used it enough yet to fully have an opinion yet. :)
Hi Matt, nice rewiev, hovever I'm need to upgrade mine general audio recording device. Something with stereo Mic also with auto feature. Until now I had only zoom H1 but I need something better, what is your suggestion?
Tascam dr40
I have two because of you but could have used his video Months ago! Thank you for this video!
Haha you need more! 😜
Love mine! 1 black, 1 white. Looking forward to the next videos!
Question should I get one of these or a Tascam 40x or a Zoom h4n? my budget is $200
Matt upping his lighting game🔥🔥
This recorder has changed my life...well maybe not . Lol but it is such a beast of a unit! Makes things so much less stressful 👌🏻
Hahaha thanks!!
Just an fyi for people purchasing and Matt. If you go to tascams homepage you can download new firmware that provides more features like -12db safety track and mp3 recording.
It's a bit odd to install but worth it for some :)
Great little device and great video :)
Does Tascam require you to 'register', ie, the 'ol hold features back so they can data mine you later scam ?
I didn´t have to register. It was just a page on their homepage with a download link :)
Hey Matt! What about windy conditions? Do you use it without a "deadcat" if not what would you recommend? Cheers
Hey! I usually put it under a shirt if it’s windy. Or I have other recorders with different mics I can use as backup. :)
Great review! Keep up the quality. I've had my eyes on these for awhile, definitely seem worth the price.
Dude you are so happy, you make me happy!
You're psychic! I was wondering about the bride mic'ing, and you responded. I was wondering about syncing the audio and you responded... I think. Will the "settings" video cover any tips/tricks in regards to being efficient when syncing or will it strictly be settings on the device?
It’s just going to be settings, but syncing is a good future topic idea. 😉
Hey Matt, really been enjoying your audio series. Very entertaining and informative :) . Just wondering if you had tried or had thoughts on the Instamic Pro as an alternative to the DR-10 for critical audio you have to get right the first time every time such as weddings?
I think the Instamic is great as a backup! I wouldn’t use it without another mic.
@@whoismatt thanks for the reply, I was about to pull the trigger on a couple of Instamatic Pro units, but will look more closely at the DR-10.
Haha I already own one cause of you Matt! So far love it!
Me too ;)
Me too :)
Hello Matt. Where do you attach the mic on the bride? Love your channel. Best of luck from Brussels!!
Hey! I have a dedicated bride mic-ing video coming in the future. I also talk about mic-ing the bride in this video about halfway through: th-cam.com/video/PFWmc9KaPhQ/w-d-xo.html
