Gil is a maker of excellent guitars, and also an excellent person. He frequents a couple of guitar building sites and is always helpful and gracious to any and all questions. His building philosophy and techniques are not secrets.
Maybe the Jim Kelly vs the Suhr Alexi is the main difference but this sounds way deeper and more open than the Burst replica Gil Yaron you played Pete.
Interesting he saw a problem with the tom & stop bar system. I built a LP this autumn using a MojoAxe (no affiliation) wrap tailpiece and the way the whole guitar rings versus any tom/stop combo is remarkable! Thanks for the demo Pete! Gil's build posts have been a guiding light for my builds, so thanks to Gil too!
Holy smokes!! Ok, so after I buy this guitar and don't have $3000 left to buy the Komet amp what pedal in your opinion gets me closest to that sound you just put in my head. OMG, I can't get it out. Please please tell me because that was bad arss right there.
I took a mid 80s ventura L.P. copy , mint condition , installed a Seymour pearly gates at the bridge , and an early Seymour slash aph - 1 in the neck , put in 500 k pots in a 50s wiring setup , added bumblebee capacitors to the tone/ volume pots , and some Ernie ball 10 / 42 super slinkys........WOW ! Even I'm amazed at the difference in sound quality ! I've been tinkering with several used guitars like this lately . I don't think I will ever buy a new one again . I got a 2001 gothic explorer , put Seymour greenies in it and new orange caps , and first one I got and messed with was a 2000 gothic les Paul and put slash pros in it with bumblebees , it's pretty awesome too . Both goths had been messed with and junk pickups were in em , so both needed retrying . Anyhow....I got a hammer l.p. Copy and an arias I'm fixing to redo . I'm still deciding how and what goodies I wanna put in em yet.....keep makin vids , especially with Phil X .....I really enjoyed that one !
Hi Pete, I must agree with the others, It's great to have you back. Now I can continue my quest for tone. As far as the Gil guitar... sounds real nice but I think I'll keep my Gibson Les Paul Trad (I like the burden around my neck) Besides pound for pound a good deal at 1700.00.
I agree with the already mentioned that it does have some hybrid characteristics. That fat led Zeppelin one tele sound is apparent.Overall a well balanced weight friendly guitar getting a full spectrum of desired tones associated with the rosewood tele and a dryer out old resonant les Paul.i saw your interview with the builder and was impressed with his passion going to Kalamazoo to interview the old school original craftsmen.great sounding and as always you do a fine job articulating and playing.much thanks enjoy your videos
PUs look like Wide Range Humbuckers which if made right sound somewhere between Tele and HB but arent either (Ive own vintage and have had the Lollar Regals too). Collings makes a very similar guitar with the CL Deluxe minus the core wood thing.
Sounds cool. Wish you took it for a spin on the SL68. I love that amp. I use your Axe Tone Match everyday. :-). And I agree, a comparison between the 2 Yaron models would be awesome. Since Gil's goal was to make a better LP, it begs the question...did he? Thanks for the effort, Pete. Great demo!
those pickups are awesome, usually when you have a bright chimey clean sound like that on a neck humbucker and then flip to the bridge it takes your head off but these didn't do that. Also impressed with how resonate it was acoustically
Great instrument!!! Sounds fantastic but I'm hearing more of a tele vibe than the chunk of a LP. I think to get close to that tone it needs more wieght girth. Closer to high 7-8 pounds at least. Doesn't really sound like a paul to me.
Thanks for the video demo Pete. The bridge pickup sound really good, neck pickup just too modern and generic, the shape of the guitar resembles the les paul, but its a bit too fat in some areas, looks odd. One thing i can't believe if the cheap looking inlays, definitely he could have done a better job there. Over all out of 10 i probably would give it a 6.
i was thinking the same, dimario have patents that talks about the gap of air that controls the magnet strength... i don´t understand that, this is not new.
Pete Thorn It really is rather unique in tone isn't it. I was trying to "peg it" -- I couldn't. Great to see you back for 2014, your channel is the best Pete.
Wow they are bright/shrill to my ears. Im happy with my strat I assembled and wired myself. But cool 😎 anyways. Hi 🙋 Pete! Respect bro. 1blessed love. Grtx AnkuTom
"It weighs about 6 pounds so anyone with a bad back? this is your saving grace" yeah Pete plus your wallet will weigh considerably less so there's that as well...
0v3nm4n dont think he can because his other yaron is les paul replica and it might put gil yaron in some trouble...i liked the other gil yaron more....by the way you rock pete, thanks for all your awesome vids

Good to have you back Pete. Some of the absolute best gear demo's on TH-cam are yours man.
thanks! :)
@John Franklin maybe the Rockett Animal? Great "Marshally" tones
Pete Thorn, you're the man! Love watching you videos. Its amazing how awesome the torpedo live sounds, definitely need to pick one up for my Friedman!
Best demos on youtube.
I would starve myself for three days to see the Thornmeister do an extensive H9 demo!
That may be the prettiest top I've ever seen. Very nice piece.

Wow if only all les Paul's had been done more this way that is one fiery guitar....... thanks for sharing Pete ....great playing as as always
awesome clean and balance sound
Pete thorn love that old school sound, enthusiasm and and the perfect descriptions of the sounds. And the fx. Total inspiration!
Another great one from Gil. Tone for days.

I think this is the first time I've heard the Komet! Kickass my friend, and that guitar is just gorgeous! Take it easy Pete and thanks!
Beautiful guitar and brilliant idea for body construction.
Beautiful guitar and inspiring playing as always.
That guitar cuts! Sharp...I dig it! Great demo!
Pete Great sound and playing as always
please make a demo of the gil yaron les paul that you have..
Well thought out made axe, liked the way the pups were made and the woods. Like to more from the plexi:)
That neck pickup sounds amazing.
Sounds great, especially clean, which is where I find Les Paul's tend to lack a bit. Great playing as always Pete
My guess is the truss rod adjustment placement at the heal end is to help prevent that neck break that LP's are famous for.
awesome, love the concept of the weight reduction. Very cool.
Has he used Paulownia Wood for the body filling.?
Those pups sound like Gretsch style Buckers a bit. Very very nice, the best of both PAF and TVJ.
Hi Pete,

So smooth.
Pete is that your rack systems custom board behind you? Looks diff with a Mobius on it now
Very nice, incredible clarity, like a telecaster on steroids
that is a crsip yet round sounding guitar...that middle position smokes. if i could ya know i would, great playing too, great demo.
An A/B comparison with a Gibson Les Paul Standard would be great!
Awesome! Is that the lick from Under Pressure at 0:58?
Sounds great. What’s the song in the intro?
It's an excellent concept but my money's still with the 59' burst style replicas. I would love to play one though and the pickups intrigue me.
PUs look like Wide Range Humbuckers which if made right sound somewhere between Tele and HB but arent either (Ive own vintage and have had the Lollar Regals too). Collings makes a very similar guitar with the CL Deluxe minus the core wood thing.
Pete, I think I see a pedalboard demo update in the future. I see you have some toys on your board. Hope you consider!!!
Sounds cool. Wish you took it for a spin on the SL68. I love that amp. I use your Axe Tone Match everyday. :-).

Thanks for the effort, Pete. Great demo!
I'm in love!!
Great stuff! Really interesting body concept gotta read more about the pick ups. Gil = very smart man
Thank you, thank you thank you ...
Where can I get those guitars, sounds awesome,I live in Costa Rica, let me know de web add, please,by the way you got the tone, great playing !!!!
Did anyone else notice the Bonamassa-esque lick at 7:00..pete as always sounds greats and ur a great player
More like an EJ lick...
Great tone when it gets a little dirty,You rock man,Namm in 2 weeks or so!!!
Sweet! Sold!!
Very open sound and chimey, I like that, what I don't like sounds somewhat thin for a guitar with that chunk of wood and humbuckers.
So you like it or not?
You See. Nobody. Nobody loved the chambered Gibson r8 of even the cheap studio vintage mahogany. That chambering I new was awesome. So resonant
Gil is a steely eyed missile man. :-D. So is that core wood Japanese magnolia aka ho wood like they use for kitchen knife handles over there?
I have a guzheng made out of paulownia and am amazed at the clear transparent sound it has. I believe this wood has a big future in the guitar world.
Love the body shape but not the stock so much. Would grow on me. Sounds absolutely stellar.
any idea where we can pick one of these up pete?
they can be ordered from Gil directly, on a custom basis, at his website (listed at end of video)
Sweet!
wow.. sounds great almost reminds me of a semi-hollow-body .
sounds great! PRS 594sc also does this quite well...
great tone as alway,graet demo
Only 6 pounds? That's so light !I'm surprised the neck isn't heavy like it is on an SG, for example.
those pickups are awesome, usually when you have a bright chimey clean sound like that on a neck humbucker and then flip to the bridge it takes your head off but these didn't do that. Also impressed with how resonate it was acoustically
yes correct the bridge doesn't take your head off! It's got great balance
thanks for the video
Great instrument!!! Sounds fantastic but I'm hearing more of a tele vibe than the chunk of a LP. I think to get close to that tone it needs more wieght girth. Closer to high 7-8 pounds at least. Doesn't really sound like a paul to me.
tonebender69 Not really supposed to- it's supposed to be kind of a "hybrid" tone, somewhere between a Tele and a GOOD vintage-style LP I'd say
Manufacturers: if you wanna sell ANY piece of gear, have it demoed by Pete Thorn: he can make a stone sound amazing :-) hehe.
Man, they sound like gold foil or something. Crazy how right the designer of the PAF got it.
Over all out of 10 i probably would give it a 6.
hahaha. I love finding these videos and finding funny comments like these.
Gibson got it right the first time. This sounds closer to a Strat than any Les Paul, let alone a 59. Looks pretty though.
The air gap thing, isn't that already a dimarzio thing? Airbuckers.
i was thinking the same, dimario have patents that talks about the gap of air that controls the magnet strength... i don´t understand that, this is not new.
It does not sounds like a Paul , it sounds.more like a tele , but still a nice guitar.
Is it my ears or does it have a bit of a Malcom Young Gretsch character?
Sorta, yes! maybe like the love child of a Gretsch, a 335, a Tele, and a LP...
Beautiful guitars....should be for $8,500 to $10,000 (used)!
wow !!!!!!
I'd have to sell one of my kids to get one
I LOVE the looks and the sound of this thing, but the headstock just doesn't sit right with me. Looks...cheap, almost.
Such a pro player - great demo as always. Construction is quite wasteful, that's a lot of mahogany left for wood chips.
"It weighs about 6 pounds so anyone with a bad back? this is your saving grace" yeah Pete plus your wallet will weigh considerably less so there's that as well...
+Ram Lathers that is true! Ha
It sounds great but too bright for a LP style guitar.
just do it, only 10k
Great sounding guitar but I don't care for the headstock design
mmm huh huh huh huh mmm huh huh.......Bone.......huh huh huh
sounds like a.....guitar
Looks good, but sound thin and dull compared to a Gibson.
haha, its pronounced Gil Yah-Rone ;)
0v3nm4n
dont think he can because his other yaron is les paul replica and it might put gil yaron in some trouble...i liked the other gil yaron more....by the way you rock pete, thanks for all your awesome vids
ma pitom? how would it put Gil in trouble?
torpedo live meu ovo
...terrible
listening to that guitar gave me a headache
