I really wanna like this video on the accord the drums sound so good.....however it’s so hard to hear them over the shitty playback track. If you’re going to make a drum demo video, feature the sound of the kit only. Can’t knock the playing but it would’ve been nice to hear it isolated to show off the kit more.
I really like this new wood combo a lot more than the B/B or all Bubinga. I know Bubinga has been all the rage for the last 5+ years but it's a very dense, hard wood and if you listen to a lot of videos with it the drums have a really quick and loud, focused attack but don't have much in the way of extended sustain. You can especially hear it in the floor toms. They just sound really loud, boomy, and very quick but are not warm or singing in the way you get with maple or walnut. It's a personal preference of course but I like drums with a lot of sustain and warmth. In fact I wish they had switched to a maple / walnut combo or even a walnut / mahogany combo.
That’s exactly what bb and bubinga players are after. The reasons you just named are the exact reasons I love bubinga. I have the bb’s and prefer the low quick sound over the warmth and resonance of maple or the walnut birch but the walnut birch still sounds amazing and they did an amazing job because it was a tall task to replace the starclassic bb’s which are one of the best selling and most popular kits of all time. And to find a shell recipe with walnut and birch and deliver as a good replacement and at a cheaper price is just awesome. I knew Tama was gonna come through but it really is neck and neck which is great. I’ve seen half of the people say they like the walnut birch and other people like the bb. I will always love my bb forever but I do wanna buy these one day and use them as a touring and gigging kit.
Andy Ham Ive yet to own a starclassic kit (I do have a 14x6.5 BB snare tho). I have the 2014 Superstar hyper full birch in mocha fade. They sound close enough to the BB that I couldn’t justify $1500 in difference. I think if I were to get an S-class Id go for all maple or the new W/B.
Yeah same I think the bubinga has a sweeter low end. My dream kit is a DW Cherry with (at least) 3 rack toms & 2 floor toms but until I'm rich these Starclassics seem to be one of the market's best price vs. performance kits. I've been really impressed with videos of the B/B kit, and I was excited to hear about the W/B as Walnut is another one of the drum making woods I really like the tone of and is more unique than the typical woods. However the W/B kit doesn't seem to have the same punch as the B/B in the bass drum and floor toms, although there aren't that many videos of it so I'll keep an open mind. From what I've heard so far though, as you say, a mix of the two would be awesome! Even better if the snare was a full Star Walnut or Zebrawood (the most pleasant sounding snare I've ever heard, doesn't have the biggest crack but just sounds sweet and would go with all styles of music)...Shame the B/B is discontinued so the only stock left will be going quickly and there won't be the choice of sizes and finishes you'd get with a new kit. I can't get one until I find somewhere to play it that won't disturb neighbours... so need to find a practice studio that will let me keep my own kit, or move into a detached house. As soon as that happens I'm looking forward to getting a Starclassic, until then I have to stick with my electric kit.
@@dreammachine86 I had a StarClassic maple kit then a B/B sold everything and just have an electronic kit ATM. I plan on getting back on stage at some point so will need a acoustic kit. Also check out some of Mapex's offerings they have been doing hybrid kits with walnut for a while now and they are priced a bit lower than Tama. They are made in Taiwan but the quality fit and finish is still excellent
I bought a new set of Yamaha tour customs about 2 weeks ago and returned then for these. I’m so glad I did. These Tamas are 10 times better. I love the punchy fat sound they make. I pick mine up today. I ordered the vintage marine pearl finish 4 piece shell pack. But I saw and played a set in the store and they sound amazing. The build and finish quality are perfect too. No unwanted overtones at all. Even the bass sounded perfect which had no damping at all besides the EQ4 head that come on it. I had a set of birch Superstar Hyperdrives a few years ago and with G2 coated heads they sounded like a studio recording from only 5 feet away with no damping. I expected the Yamahas to be better than those, but they weren’t. I loved the punch of those all birch drums, but these with the birch outer plies and 2 inner plies of walnut have that punch and a fat bottom end. I don’t think a single wood type could produce that.
David Bruce I think beta for your side but Yamaha is faraway to these things I am tell you. I am posting the video of Yamaha tour customs soon you will see mate .
Lawrence Muliika I didn’t say the Yamahas are terrible. The tour customs are a professional grade kit. But they don’t have the fit and finish quality of the Tamas. And the Tamas sound better. The threads in the tuning lugs were rough and it felt like 3 of the tuning rods were trying to cross thread.
I got the 12, 14, 20 setup in red oyster. Still kind of mixed feelings. Going to try some different heads (put Aquarian TC on both sides of toms) but I honestly really hate how much the quick release floor tom legs allow it to wobble all over. Cool concept, I feel like it was poorly executed.
@@siim605 I play more of a mellow jam type music and also worship at church and it does pretty good.. Single ply coated heads give it plenty of tone. I was concerned at 1st that it was going to be more of a hard rock style drum kit but with the right heads the thing sounds fantastic.Fairly warm and full.
@@jonathanbormann5077 Ohh okay. I am specifically buying this kit for progressive metal, stoner metal, hardcore/metalcore, stuff like that (I'm pretty new to gigging and I have gigs coming up - my band does some of these genres and I'm going to be playing metal festivals and clubs and stuff like that). Would it work do you think?
@@siim605 What's some 2 ply heads absolutely. Gives it a nice, deep, punchy sound. I feel like that's more of what they're made for. Would probably go with the 22" BD though
@@jonathanbormann5077 OK thanks. I might also instead try to go for a Pearl Masterworks Stadium kit (8-ply and 10-ply maple), although I would really be stretching the budget, obviously much expensive. Any thoughts on that kit?
5 piece shell pack (10, 12, 14, 16, 22), then order additional tom and snare separately www.gear4music.com/Drums-and-Percussion/Tama-Starclassic-Walnut-Birch-8-x-6-Tom-Lacquer-Phantasm-Oyster/2SBF

motodrummer I ordered mine in vintage marine pearl. It’s the nicest, most normal looking finish they have to me. It’s a wrap, but I don’t care. They are amazing drums. I only see the weird finishes in the stores though.

Not sure if people are just watching the vid on a phone or what . I watched through tv/onkyo/klipch . Music could be pulled down a smidge but them drums sound awesome
Your drumming is amazing and shows perfect what Tama is able to build for awesome drums!
Love this guys posture, looseness, and relaxed approach! Dig the music and the drums too 😃
These sound glorious!
Great sounding kit, and great drumming!!
Looks like he’s been watching some garstka videos. He’s adopted some signature garstka drumming faces.
Andy Ham Good call
Even the bottom lip bite one too, you know the one
I also found Kaz vibes in his drumming
fantastic drummer
He has great technique. His shoulders and are arms are even relaxed and not raised.
That finish is absolutely 😍😍😍😍
Very good and powerful drummer-drums combination 👍🏼👍🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Absolutely beautiful set of Tamas! 👍
Sound good too!
People, try this video with headphones and stop complaining.
Clau Gutiérrez we did...still all annoying electronic music and no toms
