Been sayin it for years that he's one of the only people I've seen keep up with Em, he just doesnt sacrifice his message to please the critics he makes the music he wants. Hes somewhere right behind Black Thought and Andre 3000 in my top 5 but he still has the rest of his story to write.

I mean it’s more so, because he really wasn’t around back in the day, and that’s because back then you needed to be on with someone, and he had fell out with Dre and em, so the little notoriety he had was due to that, but because Eminem linked back up with him, and helped him get clean creating slaughterhouse then doing the bad meets evil album he was able to get some looks, and from there he hasn’t let up and he took what he got from em and ran with it dropping mixtapes , linking up with premier dropping two classic solo albums... it’s making people listen and give him appreciation. He isn’t around here banging on the younger generation really he just doing him.

Royce, Lupe and Black Thought are the lyricists that I love that are omitted from the GOAT convo. Lupe, in particular, is very dense and layered. Black thought is potent. Royce is witty. All elite lyricists for different purposes.

If we didn't have a Black Thought walking around I'd say yes. He's in my top 5. Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch and Royce are in a category of their own. They are most talented and underappreciated lyricists in the game.
    Edit:
You know what nah Royce is the GOAT. Even if Royce only had everything layers and after that's already an impressive body of work. Shit Thought is severely underrated but never overlooked. Royce is so ill I've been championing him since lyricists lounge vol 2.

sad that Lupe lost so much attention after his "fall off" period when he was trapped with Atlantic and forced into dropping mediocre records. the minute he escaped, he went and proved to everyone that he was never gone. tetsuo & youth (which we can thank Anonymous for allowing to be the version Lupe wanted), pharaoh heights, drogas wave...he truly is on a level that no one else can touch.

Just saw this on Royce’s Instagram and watched the whole thing, then I had to come here just to comment.
Eminem will always be my favourite rapper ever (my friend and I were saying after listening to his new album he’s just getting better and better) but I rank Royce VERY HIGH. One of the all time greatest lyricists ever. But over here in Australia we didn’t really seem to get his stuff readily available until TH-cam/Spotify etc (I’d only ever heard his stuff he did with Eminem but I always LOOOOVED what I heard) - as I got older I educated myself and I fell in love with his style. I learned a lot from this video too. And I got to see him with Eminem when they came to Australia last year and I flew interstate to see him with my mum, a 62 year old white Australian woman (we were at the concert for her birthday) who watched in awe and said “He’s incredible” and when we went back to our hotel we listened to the Book Of Ryan.
Anyway, all I wanted to say is I have too much nostalgia and love for Eminem, the guy who got me into rap as a tiny child... but Royce is undeniably one of the most incredible lyricists ever. Love him. Following him on Instagram is a pleasure. Cannot wait for his next album, and am so excited to see what he does this time...
Oh, and I used to watch you on Vine back in the day, and then I saw this video thought you did a great job.... SUBSCRIBED!

Jack Carver I wouldn’t say he demolished Em on every track, imho, this statement is not true, but they were pretty even. Royce did an amazing job on a lot of tracks, but Em too was completely savage. Right now, I feel like Em is better than Royce, it’s just the fact that hating on Em for no reason is trendy now, I’m not saying you’re doing that ofc, but a lot of people are doing it and the corny bars stuff? One of the biggest bullshit I’ve ever heard, I’ll tell you, I heard some “not so good bars” just on a couple of songs from a couple of projects. But, as I was saying, right now Eminem is slightly better than Royce, but damn, Royce is a very close second. Man is a beast on the beat. 1. illogic (Don’t confuse him with Logic. Illogic is one of the most intelligent, introspective, and profound writers to ever grace the mic. His poetry and descriptive language is unmatched).
    2. Akala- He is extremely skilled and intelligent. His ideas are studied at major universities, and he has an incredible mastery of hip hop and music in general. His knowledge of history gives him a true understanding of the causes and cycles that occur and how they relate to current social issues today.
    3. Greydon Square - He also one of the best writers in hip hop. He probably has the most in depth understanding of science and mathematics of any rapper I’ve seen, and his metaphors are often layered with scientific and mathematic references and concepts.
    4. Aesop Rock- While often extremely abstract, his lyrical ability should not be overlooked. His metaphors are often extremely complex, and his ability to include hidden meanings and concepts rivals that of some of the best writers in literature. Not to mention, he has the highest vocabulary in hip hop.
    5. Hemlock Ernst- Not only is he a great musician, but he has an incredible poetic and linguistic ability to create rhyme schemes that relate to some of the thought processes we all face when dealing with major philosophical questions of the common man’s plight of daily existence

Even Eminem said Royce is the only rapper to ever give him a run for his money

Royce is nicer than nice, but Black Thought is still above him IMO. I would have added Em, but he has spent the last decade chopping down his own legacy.

"Chopping down his own legacy" when hes been getting better all this time... Are you fuckin' deaf and blind or do you just not concentrate on the lyrics? You do realize hes better than he was in 2000's.

Royce is beyond top tier forreal. Not only is he a hands down lyrical monster, but has been flexing his skills on the boards as a producer. Have to agree with Page that I prefer the Royce version of Renegade!🤷‍♂️

Pretty sure Eminem is the greatest lyricist of all time. Just listen to his last album. Royce is up there. I’d put Lupe over him as well.

Negative. You listen to Lupe and think Em puts together more entendres, elite wordplay, puns and clever usage of literary devices than Lupe? If so, then I'd argue that you're not listening to Lupe keenly at all, and if you are then maybe we should have a little debate. You'd have to convince me how Em's a better lyricist than Lupe because I've listened to both rapper's discography, and have concluded that Lupe has been a far better lyricist than Em for at least a decade. Em has gotten better lyrically, but still not on par with Lupe. Nothing Em has released bests songs like "failure" and "mural".

EverytingsFx don’t worry bud, I’ve listened to Lupe’s entire discography countless times. I’ve got hardcopies of F&L, The Cool, Tetsuo, and Drogas Wave. Mural is Lupe’s best lyrical song? I’d argue it’s WAV Files. Elite similes, metaphors, for days. Bottom line I think they’re the two best in the game. No need to start putting down GOATs because I hurt your feelings putting Lupe at 2.

Royce is really an artist and always suprises me with some original bars. But sometimes lyrically so complex it's hard to appreciate if you're not familiar with rap in general.
