I love the work Josh and his father do. I actually met them and had lunch at Subway at the NMRA Show in my hometown Sacramento back in like 2012 or so.
Nice video, this is the weathering process I use the most. One detail I think you shouldve included is weathering the wheel faces. Its a small step but makes a huge difference when the model is moving
Apple Barrel paints can be had at Walmart too I've had good luck with extreme weathering for overly grimy or derelict equipment by layering washes of all sorts of colours
This is almost the same thing I do for Brass, but just without the AIM weathering powder and using oil paints instead as they are easier to work and do a removal process instead.
Hey Josh. Great video as always. I have a question for you. With all the changes that have happened in the NS Asheville area are you going to keep your layout the same or make changes?
Hey on your railraod crossing video tutorial I don’t know where to get the bell for it, could you tell me a name to look up so I can buy the bell speaker for it?
If you have an airbrush, use it. The only reason for no-airbrush videos is that, if you post a video that uses an airbrush, the comments fill up with "Wah, I don't have an airbrush. Make a video that doesn't use an airbrush." You especially want the airbrush for fading, as trying to brush-fade narrow stripes with different coloured paint gives a very chunky look.
Thanks! School has been busy and kept me from modeling, but things should slow down this summer. Look forward to getting back to the layout soon! - Josh
feel like weathering the trucks and fuel tank with the wash was only doable as the BNSF units are silver. Would be a lot tricker to have a desirable effect with most roads having black trucks + fuel tanks
Hey Josh, thanks for showing this with paint brushing. You went right over a lot of the labels and warning decals. Usually those are reapplied if they cant be read anymore? Do you just wipe them while the paint is still wet or wait until its dry. As you said , it is hard to keep straight lines, would you recommend taping them or will that peel the other paint. Finally I feel it looks chunky and heavy overall. Could you do an engine with airbrushed weathering the same way and show the comparison? I've got an airbrush but still have to learn how to use it. I am just starting into weathering and will try by brushing but I don't want them to be too heavy. Earl
Hey Earl, I will be going back and applying new warning labels over the existing ones. Alternatively, you could scrape the paint off of the labels (which in hindsight I would have done). Regarding the texture, something about the camera picks it up more so than in person. Looks great under layout lighting. You could definitely do a lot of the same effects with an airbrush!
Why do essentially a full brush repaint with acyrlics when you could get better results and not loose small labels and things by filtering with oil paints?
Well that was cool, so question on the paint, are you actually use full strength paint or is it diluted a bit closer to wash? Asking because my brush paint technique is not that great.
@@nsmodeler24 Depends very much on the paint. Some paints require more dilution than others. I think you needed a little more dilution on the yellow, as the brush marks are clearly visible on the nose stripes at 11:26.
Hey Josh- would you be interested in quoting detail work on a ES44DC BNSF locomotive for me replicating the damaged locomotive I was in during a Boulder strike? I'm not sure how to contact anyone via private message here.
If you set the shell out in the sun for several days, turning each side towards the sun, wouldn't that fade the paint similarly. Anybody out there, tried that?
No, several days under the sun isn't going to mimic the effect of several _years_ under the exact same sun. And it's not clear the pigments used on the model would fade in the same way as the ones used on the real thing -- different paints fade in different ways.
I don’t get how people are already commenting before they have watched the entire thing. Nice job as usual
Because they want to be the first comment
Watch on 2x speed :)

I don’t have an airbrush this was super helpful thanks!
This tutorial is very inspiring, I might just have to try this for myself. Amazing work Josh 👏
Thanks! - Josh
Thanks, Josh, for this detailed weathering tutorial. It was at just the right pace to follow easily. Cheers from Wisconsin!
Thanks Andrew! - Josh
Beautiful dash 9
Apple Barrel paints can be had at Walmart too

Welcome back. Great video for weathering. I will use it.
Outstanding work!
Thanks Gene!
Finally a brand new video :D
Yes, liked it. Turned out superior
Omg he uploaded this is a holiday! Awesome video as always!
Awesome job thanks for the helpful tips
The tutorial worked great thanks for explaining it so well

Great to get a new video from you. I enjoyed this one
Thanks Joseph!
Great Job on that Loco!
Josh get a set of dental tools Duluth has them saves the cuts on the fingers those "dull" knives still hurt. Thanks for the video!
Great idea. Thanks!
Hey Josh. Great video as always.

Hey Johnathan, we will keep modeling NS in Asheville as we always have! No big changes planned.
just another amazing video👍👍
Can you make a video tutorial of how to install walk way lights on that Foamer SOU high hood?
Can you do a Union Pacific next?
Thank you !
great job👍
Very nice
I have thought of doing some light weathering on some of my bnsf locomotives. But I don't have much experience to know what to do.
Hey on your railraod crossing video tutorial I don’t know where to get the bell for it, could you tell me a name to look up so I can buy the bell speaker for it?
Josh...Hmmm...,Love that technique....I weathered my trains by air brush.....I have to try this when I get another loco ...Thanks.....NS....RULES.....
Thanks Val! - Josh

Nice to see a new video after such a long time. How are your studies going?

Great work as usual Josh. Any tips on getting the shell off? I can’t seem to get one off of my 25th Anniversary unit
With the coupler boxes out, that should be all you need on the Dash 9s.
@@nsmodeler24 yeah I’ve tried it but it seems extremely tight don’t want to break the details.
@@MidwestFarmToys😂
how do you make the interior monitors? Is it a SMD LED?
the warning stickers just get painted over?
Cool

lets go

Diluted
Two drop paint two drop water
Just a little bit of water to dilute it!

Lindo demais 😍😍👏👏👏
What's the next layout update
Looks great!

Since dis is a dash-9, it could have been a repainted warbonnet

So, are you moving away from NS now since the bad ways they have handled their disasters? Or are you just trying to change it up.
Still modeling NS! Just working on some run-through power.
