This bikes been kicking around the shop for a few years and we finally got to build it! Managed to acquire this from a kid in the neighbourhood who had it for many years!
I have raced Hutch from. 1984 up to 1988 where I had a ligament surgery... And this was the end. I had a Pro Star, which is basically a Pro Racer with all the Hutch stuff on it. It was super light and a delight to ride. All my gear helmet, pants, shirt, gloves have been stolen and I have sold the bike in parts much later in year 2000 where I sold it 3 times the price it used to cost at that time.
I remember working a whole summer doing little side jobs and earning enough money to buy one of these. I think I paid $299 plus tax in 1986. I was unstoppable on this thing. Good times.
I have one of these that I have owned since I was a kid. I just went through it and hand polished everything had it rebuilt it using all of the original parts including the pads other than new tires, brake pads and a new chain. The original tires had great tread but had dry rot so I put more modern styled tread tires on it and I replaced the chain since it was old. It looks just about brand new. To think that I almost bought a Mongoose Californian or a Diamondback back in the day and the mother of a friend of mine that was into BMX racing worked at a bike shop and told me you don't want one of those, you want a Hutch. Best advice ever. I had never even heard of Hutch until she mentioned it. I know it isn't the top of the line Hutch but I wasn't racing back in the day I was riding through neighborhoods and I felt bad about having my parents lay out $700+ on a bike. At the end of the day people still just say wow that is a HUTCH.
Hutch frames & forks were made by Thruster BMX bikes in the Thruster factory in Wayne NJ. My father worked across the street from Thruster ( I had a Thruster Vanishing Point ) we use to go there at night and dumpster dive until they caught on.
Hutch frames were originally made by Thruster, then Profile, then Hutch manufactured their own frames. In 1984, Hutch moved manufacturing to Taiwan with the Pro Raider. Soon after, they had Japanese manufactured Pro Racers. These serial numbers are on the rear dropout with the “baseball” logo.
I had a Pro Raider in elementary school. Some d-bag stole it. Crazy story but I got it back like 12 years later. Cops called me up and said they had my bike and I had no idea what they were talking about. Went down there and it was the Hutch. Only thing original was the frame though and it was beat to hell and painted multiple times. Took it home but ended up tossing it.
I prefer to see no hold barred restorations on survivors like this, but it'll do...I definitely would've polished everything, found 3pc Hutch cranks, and Hutch Pro rounds, and a Kashimax seat, and replaced those old deteriorated stickers. But hey, it works!
What's the axle size for the pro raider? Picked up a frame and fork, waiting for it to arrive so now I'm looking for wheels but don't know what axle size to look for. Will be visiting you guys soon to pick up some parts for the build.
