Greg, Greg, Greg... All I could do is watch. Wow. I'm speechless, and I'd bet money that even Nathan Watts didn't nail it the same way every time like you did. AMAZING job!!! You're a machine.
Hey Pet, thank you very much. This was kind of butt kicker if you know what I mean ;) I wondered the same thing, if he played it the same way every time. I like to thing he plays it a little different every time. Thanks!
GAH!!! Maybe if I try a measure at a time... but sir, I bow to you! I always loved this piece. Songs in the Key of Life has so many varied muscal styles. Thank you for this.
I picked up the bass in 1978, played by ear and couldn't read music and didn't know my notes on the neck. What I would do was approach it the way you approached breaking down words into syllables....a section at a time, if I'm making sense. That helped me to learn bass lines to songs like the " Sidewinder=Lee Morgan/Bassist=Bob Cranshaw to "Good Times=Chic/Bassist=Bernard Edwards whom I followed religiously. I have since gotten a bass coach which helped a ton. 62 now and can follow chord progressions when needed. Sometimes professional music direction makes a world of difference. In my case it really did. Hope this helped a little. Peace and love from the low end.🎵🎵🎸🎸
That 12/8 bar is just nasty...had the SITKOL LPs back then, stumbled upon "Contusion" & wow...an instrumental Jazz Fusion track. The R&B/Funk albums I was buying back...I lived for those instrumental tracks. AWB, Brothers Johnson, Quincy Jones ("Midnight Soul Patrol"), etc.
It is nasty to read and write out, but I think it comes quite naturally to play. I'd soil myself though if I had to site read this without knowing how the song goes :)
WOW!!! 🤯😊😎👍🏽🎶You nailed it Greg! Excellent job! 🙌🏽👏🏽🙌🏽👏🏽Thank you. This is going to be a challenge but I’m going to take it a note and measure at a time. I really want to play this bassline and you’ve given me a tool to do so. Thanks again. 😊
Thanks for letting me see how to play some of my favorite songs with bass lines. I am a guitar player, but certain songs I always want to play the bass! Would you consider doing “If I Can Dream” by Elvis Presley? Keep up the great content.
Well hopefully you think it is a fun one to play as well. He played on the infamous live tv broadcast show. He worked on the tune after Kennedy was assassinated and based it off MLK Jr. it is an emotional performance for sure.
Michael Sembello on guitar...Nate Watts on bass? Gotta be. ;-O I'm going with Nate Watts...so, IIRC, did he de-tune a 1/2 step ('cause SW used many Flats in the bulk of his music., i.e. the "raised" keys on a piano)? Watts' open E always sounds gnarly. 🙂
This is the 2nd time of heard about him tuning down. I may have missed that in this song...ugh, it bugs be to spend time and effort on something that's not accurate. Oh well...we're all learning :) On a positive note though, most guys at a gig don't have time to completely tune down so hopefully this will be of use to someone. Thanks!
@@BassCovers Maybe it was "Do I Do". Pretty sure something was up with that one (IIRC, the LP is not exactly "in-tune" with 440Hz. I remember it was always a pain t o play along if I didn't adjust my tuning). "Contusion" IMO, has that similar tone as "Do I Do".
Wow, this bass line is insane, Nathan Watts is a beast. Great job transcribing and playing this!
Thank you very much...yes he is!

Wow! Way out of my league 😂😂
It's a tough song...but it's doable. Just takes some time ;) Thanks!
Just take it a few bars at a time. Anything is possible, just takes time and perserverance.
@@terrimac7993 Thanks for the inspiration!
Outstanding work, well done! What year is your Jazz, I love it.
Thanks very much :) It's a a '76 USA Fender Jazz bass with EMG's and a Bad Ass bridge.

Thanks very much. I'll check out that song. I can't believe an Elvis song doesn't ring a bell for me?

This is great. I do have a question. Where could I get the music printed or pdf?
Thanks very much. Please see the video description for different options. Thanks :)

That's right, Do I Do is tuned down. I did a video of that one tuned down. I might have missed that on this one though :(
@@BassCovers ...you missed nothing! If anything, it was more difficult to pull off (if Watts did de-tune). ;-)
safe to say i shouldn't feel bad if i can't play this?? : )
hehe...nahhh :)
Come on Greg,.
