    Having had one in my family, I'd hold out for the CJ. Ours was a 1950 model. It had verypoor road manners but custom made wider wheels helped immensely.
    The Jeepsters were really cool for their time, but were never meant to be an off-road vehicle as they were two-wheel-drive. They didn't really come into their own until it's comeback in the 1960's as a CJ5-based vehicle, the Commando with V6(Buick) power. In the 1970's it really moved upstream with AMC's takeover and became a premium jeep with a large AMC inline 6 and the AMC 304 V8.
    As far as the Jeep pick-ups are concerned, I'd go for the J10/20. They had used powerful AMC V8's for years, st6arting with the 327 and topping out with the 401. Cab size was smaller than any other brand of U.S. pick-up and with acquisition by Chrysler, cutting back, the J10/20 was the first to go as they would rather sell Dodge pick-ups and then the Commanche , which the Dodge Dakota eventually replaced.
    In it's history, Jeeps partnership with Renault was really a joke, but about the only plus I see was that Renault gave Jeep modern electronic fuel injection, which turned the AMC 4L inline 6 into a real powerhouse. During this period, Jeep parts and accessories had both English and French writing on them. Chrysler's takeover brought more power to the 4L inline 6 which extend the life of that Nash-designed 6.
    Jeep/Chrysler chopped two cylinders off the 4L 6 and created another powerhouse in F.I. form. Chrysler used that engine for many years.
    With Daimler's takeover even better things came to Jeep, like the 4.7L Mercedes-designed V8.

      I've known a few people who tried to take their Jeepsters off road in the Colorado Rockies. If they use their heads, it'll work okay in the meadows or forest service roads because of the ground clearance, but not for hill or rock climbing. Some of those "mountaineers" from downtown Denver and suburban office parks want to drive everywhere once they're in the Rockies and forget they have legs that are capable of actual hiking. 😁

      @@billolsen4360 The original Jeepsters were 2WD and had very weak front ends. I have seen them where someone has converted them to 4WD.
      People who bought the original Jeepsters are the same kind of people who bought the 2WD Broncos and Blazers. The trouble is that they tried to take them off-road and often had to have an expensive tow to get them back to paved roads(if they could still drive under their own power.
      Then there are the people who buy 4WD vehicles and 99% of them never leave a paved road. Maybe 25% of the people bought them for driving in adverse conditions. The worst thing is when flatlanders take their 4WD vehicles actually off-road, tear up the trails, wreck their 4WD's plush get them all scratched and dented up because they are just too big for the mountain off-road trails. LOL

      I’ve heard the OG CJ was a bit twitchy because of the short wheelbase.

      @@What.its.like. Yes. Very much so. But the real problem was the narrow tracking width and idiots who jacked up the suspension too much. They roll over on their sides they don't usually do an end over end.
      Jeep solved the problem by increasing the tracking width. We did too on our 1950 CJ.
      But, believe me, with all the HP we got from the Ford 351W V8, I'd had her up on 2 wheels driving fast through curves. Scared the k-rap out of me and I was lucky not to panic and steered and rode it out.
      Remember the Suzuki Samari's? They were smaller than the original Jeep and were tipsy if you pushed them beyond their limits. Suzuki's solution was to bring out the Sidekick, which had a much wider track.
      Oh, did you know that one of the original prototypes submitted to the military had 4 wheel independent suspension. Those were downright dangerous and there are some still on the road. Scary!

    Thank you for another great episode. One interesting point on the pronunciation of “Willys”. Having grown up in Toledo, and knowing many, many people that worked for Willys Overland, Willys, etc - they all pronounced it will-eeze. John Willys pronounced it “Willis” but even ads from the day use both pronunciations. ~ Chuck. PS - Willys Jeep, and J10

      The people who pronounce it "willeez" also tend to spell it "willy's," hence the odd pronunciation. It's all wrong. John North Willis' pronunciation puts an end to all arguments.

Locally, and for those who worked there, it was willeez and they did spell it properly because it was on their paychecks.

I think I first heard “williss” on Barrett Jackson, and thought it sounded odd as everyone I knew associated with the company said “willeeze”.     Thanks for your thorough coverage of the Jeep; but the Jeep story makes me sad. The original Jeep was economical to produce and economical to operate. But, in the name of progress, the original design has been tampered with to the extent that all that remains is the grill, the trademark shape. It has been turned into an oversized, overweight, accessory-laden, gas-guzzling, and eye-watering expensive statement of wealth. Thanks to corporate greed and a bloat of safety regulations, the original practical and sincere Jeep now only is a fond memory.

      Me too the story of Jeep especially in the early years really kind of ticked me off, this channel is all about the underdog and they got royaly screwed
      I don’t often watch how other people do their videos but watched two neither talked about bantam.. willys was one hell of an advertiser I’ll give them that.. but they didn’t really create anything, just took ideas and out there name on them.. and honestly I think that the jeep is kind of like the curse of the bambino. In a sense that, every company that looks at the jeep as a good investment.. ends up going bankrupt or folding or being acquired by different company. It’s super interesting when you look at the jeep in that light.. Just Empties Every Pocket (for all involved with it)

      @@What.its.like. I honestly don't remember for sure. It was a 4 door im pretty sure. It belonged to a older friend I worked for. I hadn't ever gotten my license at 18or 19. I had my permit so he took me and let me use his car. It was a nice car . He was pretty well off and had kept care of his things.

      I have a friend that has a Land Rover that wants me to do it like nobody’s business problem is is nobody watches the imported cars I’m gonna still do it.. it’s one from the 90s but it looks like it’s from the 60s it’s a two-door version it’s a really super cool ride.. diesel.. i’ll see about doing that next week

    I owned 5 classic Jeeps over the years. The 1950 Willys Wagon was really the first SUV. It had classic looks, a longer wheelbase, and a really useable boxy body. My High School GF made blue velvet curtains all around for privacy. Just the thing to drive to the Friday night keggers at the beach. The 1958 FC 170 COE was the oddest duck of them all. The flathead 6 cylinder + 3 speed transmission was not really up to the task. It was a hoot to wheel off road though, riding up against the windshield in steep terrain. I sold it to a guy that drove it to Alaska. The 1971 Jeepster was far stronger and better engineered and featured the Buick V6. I loved how the steel top would come off for the summer. The longer wheelbase made for a much better ride. The torquey motor could easily cruise at highway speeds and return 18 mpg with the 3 speed manual transmission. I bought the 2007 Liberty new and appreciated the modern ride, handling, and all round performance. The IRS front suspension made it far more comfortable as a commuter. I still own and wheel my 2003 TJ Sport that I bought new. I prefer it to the later models that are just too big and heavy and loaded up with unreliable accessories. That 4.0 six cylinder motor in the TJ makes maximum torque at 1700 rpm, meaning that I don’t need to rev it up all the time to make power. This motor will go 200k- 300k easily. The newer Pentastar V6 is fragile,high revving, complicated, and wholly unreliable. Jeep has lost their way selling 60k-90k Wranglers. They have become too big, too heavy, too complicated, and far too expensive mall crawlers.

      It would’ve been really cool if they would’ve kept the bantam engine because the chief could’ve been something totally different than it is.. fuel efficient engine. Something that isn’t a jeep thing the muscle jeep with the hemi gets 9-13 mpg

    I would choose the Comanche as my favourite Jeep pick up as I admired them when they were new. Jeep has been manufacturing pick up trucks off and on, but not continuously. I have seen a few Jeep pick ups from the 1950s. The Gladiator name was first used on the pick ups that resembled the original Wagoneer, starting in 1963. That was when they had the Rolls Royce like grill. I wouldn't know how long the first generation Gladiator lasted but I like the ones made today. My nephew owns a new Gladiator.

      About a year ago I shot a video with the new jeep gladiator but I never put the episode together I don’t know why. I really like the new gladiator.. but I don’t think I’ve ever owned one for 3.6 V6 is notorious for being unreliable the older it gets with The biggest issue being cracked cylinder heads.. it’s an expensive engine for what it is

Hell even wiki For the Jeep Gives willys the title as first.. it’s only if you go under bantam do you see the truth.. ( under the willys article it does mention Bantam but it’s really downplayed)

      Very true.. I used the eagle because there was nothing like it before and Subaru took the idea. It sucks amc ran out of money if they could have held on the new products they had where great and the Cherokee sold really well.

    Good job on the Jeep history and the history of other vehicles on your channel. I am glad that you have put out the correct pronunciation of Willys. Even though I am from Pennsylvania, I'd prefer the Willys. As far as the trucks go, the J10 is my pick, but the fc150 is even better.

      I have a 48 cj3a, but my next purchase may be an early fc150 with the narrow axle. I think they are a beautiful design. The cj8 scrambler is another fine designed jeep. The new gladiator is a poor executed design. Cut the back off an unlimited and slap a bad on it. A 2 door version of a gladiator would be better.

    There have been several Jeep vehicles in my family over the years, including the truck and SUV style, I rode in some and drove a some I enjoyed them all. I always thought the AMC Eagle vehicles looked cool, although I've never been in one. If I had to choose, I'd pick the Willys, and the J10, but wouldn't mind the Gladiator 😎

      @@What.its.like.my favorites to drive were the Grand Cherokees late 90's and early to mid 2000's models, most were owned by a family member who traded every couple of years, for different models, from Cherokees to Wranglers to Grand Cherokees, in '06 they got the Commander which was cool, I drove it a few times, my brother had a '86 or '87 Comanche for a year or so, but I never drove it. I did drive my brother in law's Rubicon a few times wasn't bad either.

    Ford was commissioned in world war 2 to make their version of the jeep. They were full time 4 wheel drive, and soldiers were rolling these over so often that the government told Ford to stop making them. A total of 6 were produced, and there's a survivor vehicle at the Infoage science and history center in Wall Township New Jersey.

    Bantum simply could not build 650,000 Jeeps. Most war materials were made in full or in part by several companies. Rockolla made guns as did GM. Its common for one company to win a military design contract and others to actually build it. I'm surprised Bantum lasted until 56. If Packard could'nt make it with their huge war contracts, Bantum had no chance.

      Yeah bantam didn’t have the factory to handle mass production, but still have had A path to the trademark of the jeep because they did most of the work they did all the hard foot work.. I just think that could have

      I am starting to see the classics on the road now that the weather around here is better. I just wish one of my old cars was running. Sure would be nice to have the 1972 Cutlass on the road once again. I miss cruising.

    A 1000 lb horse eats about 15 to 20 lbs of hay a day. They poop about 30-35 lbs a day, depending on how active they are. Time for passage through the whole hindgut can range from less than 1 day to as many as 3 days. Hence it might have 45 to 60 lbs of hay passing through so the 30 to 35 lbs is just a portion. Heck, the 2 colons can be a total of 20 to 24 feet long. How do I know? We owned a horse ranch in Montana for a number of years. Ps. There is good money in horse manure. I'll take a horse any day.

    The interesting thing is the brand survives while the builders go broke. It seems to be like the US in the 50s, A number of small builders come together to try to stay alive. Stellantis is like Peugot and Citroen, Renault is'nt it? Nissan is supposedly on its last legs.

    Already you've got me fired up from the get-go, Jay, The Bantam Co. I am familiar with, by association to smaller/lighter British Austins, (Austin-tatios) Where the general principles of size and weight combined in a 4 WD pattern giving the vehicle tremendous flexibility; a role once fulfilled by the reconnaissance motorcycle. Which lacked the load carry capacity and weapons carriage stability for warfare. This, by misfortune, led to the development of the Humvee, a soft skinned multi crew machine gun mount (Which by tradition would have been of the greatest possible utility for WWII or Korea, which involved the engagement of the enemy in set-piece battles, so were a military initiated failure for a 'militant insurgency'. The US military used the Humvee as an armoured, then poorly armoured, personnel carrier. A role for which it was never designed. The Jeep had its day, and at present, apart from its utility in moving supplies over difficult terrain is a death trap on the road, by its very nature, using a trellis frame, instead of an unibody construction.

    Original Jeeps had like 36 HP and top speeds of 45 mph. All Jeeps were roll over prone which is not helped by bigger tires. The Ford Jeeps of the 50s-60s had defective suspensions and were very dangerous. A lot of the Wylis Jeeps had PTOs and could drive generators, washing machines, sawmills, etc. AMC went bankrupt buying Jeep.

      @@What.its.like. A lot of off grid farms had hit and miss engines for the task. Many can still operate and their are still parts being made for them. See "Small Engine Mechanic". He does have a tractor which spins a generator through a PTO.

    The original concept of a Jeep is still a good idea and it’s a shame the armed forces focus on larger, highly specialized vehicles like the Humvee. The history of the Jeep is sad and tortuously convoluted. Multiple instances of a good idea from a company that couldn’t ramp enough at the right window of time only to lose the opportunity to less honorable companies. AMC tried so hard to produce unique products, and they did, but too many years ahead of the market. The Eagle was what almost every car manufacturer is making now. Too bad after all these decades and ownerships Jeep products haven’t ironed out their problems.

      I totally agree with everything you said
      I don’t watch other people’s episodes often but watched a few on the jeep evolution all were different. None have credit to the bantam.. which is a shame.. just another brand getting lost to time
      That’s the goal of this channel is to bring to light all the car companies that are getting forgotten
      And supply background information and talk about and show these cars like they have never been seen before

      AMC was healthy till they went way in debt to buy Jeep. They never recovered.

      @ Roger smith that’s what I was saying to somebody else it was almost like jeep was like the curse of the bambino, every company that tried to have a cheap as a cash cow failed miserably Chrysler seems to have nine lives they are on six different companies orfive.. Which is totally nuts

      @@What.its.like. , I think you are discovering many aspects about cars and the automotive industry history. There are so many instances of the right or wrong vehicle, company, management, economy, luck, executives, whatever. AMC and Chrysler have had bad times but also some good. I wish you could have been alive in the years when there were AMC cars everywhere. Maybe not in the numbers of Fords, GMs or Chryslers, but they were in every neighborhood, street and parking lot. Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth also had their good times. Dodge sold many Chargers, Challengers and Demons. Plymouth really hit the target with Road Runners, Barracudas and Dusters. They were affordable and fast. Duster 340’s put many other cars to shame. Jeeps have always had a market, although sales numbers were low. Anyone who had a Jeep had instant friends. Everyone wanted a ride. Cherokees were very popular off an on also. When Chrysler was having trouble and Lee Iacocca was in charge, they were pushing K cars really hard. They had all the dealers move almost all of their cars to the fairgrounds and have a huge event where potential customers could walk around and see many cars without being pestered by salesmen. There was a big push to buy American 🇺🇸 and it worked. My dad bought a Fifth Avenue, which was actually a 4 door Valiant with every upgrade. It was a pretty good car. The cooperation with Renault should have worked. Small cars were popular and French cars have always been regarded for their smooth ride. Many small and imported cars back then were pretty primitive and basic. FIAT may be able to save Chrysler. I admire Sergio Marchionne for accomplishing what Mercedes couldn’t.

    The only thing that somewhat resembles the original Willys Jeep or Ford GP is the Jeep Wrangler with the 4.0 liter inline 6. Those went out of production in 2006.

    All the trim levels that Jeep offers is somewhat mind-boggling if you think about it.
    I kind of look at it as being like potato chips. It's the same product regardless of who is selling it. So if you want to differentiate yourself when you only make one product, you try to make as many different flavors of that product as you can. They might all look and taste different but underneath it all, it's a thinly sliced potato that's deep fried.
    Kind of the same way with Jeep. You look at all the different things that they make but basically they're all the same.
    I personally think that automobiles and general nowadays are hugely overpriced, but Jeep is in my opinion one of the worst offenders of that. That is what happens when you have no serious competition. You can pretty much set whatever price you want and if somebody needs that they have to pay it. Things were not as bad when Nissan was still making the X-terra and Toyota was still making the FJ cruiser. Jeep. Had some competition in the market then. That said. Jeep is still making and selling Jeeps while Nissan's and Toyota's offerings have disappeared off the new car market.

      I love the potato chip analogy what an awesome way to describe something.
      Everything is drastically over priced now the problem is people keep buying until the moment when people stop buying prices are just gonna keep going up or stay at what they are.. why sell cars cheaper when people are willing to buy at inflated prices, making more money 💰
      I have a 2006 Honda odyssey van that we were looking to upgrade before Covid one could buy a 2011 Honda Odyssey minivan which is the next body style they get there supposed to be like 28/29 miles to the gallon hwy, before Covid one could get a fully loaded Odyssey touring for about $6000 with 100,000 miles you can’t touch that van for under 15 grand now which is absolutely absurd to me who would pay $15,000 for a car that has 100,000 miles on it.. at the same token I saw Mercedes-Benz G wagon I am not a fan of that vehicle. I think they are dumb and it’s like a ride for... ah I’ll leave it at that. Somebody was trying to sell the Mercedes G wagon for 150 grand that had 120,000 miles on it.. I was like good luck that’s insane.
      I’ve owned 36 cars I’m 34 years old of course you own more cars when you get married you know cause your wife has a car. Out of all of the cars that we bought I only bought I think who of them from Pennsylvania because it is so hard to get a good deal on a car here. I bought the majority of them in Ohio West Virginia one Indiana. Just easier to do business and people don’t want the moon and the stars for the cars in those states

    With regard to our equine friends, if you can imagine our streets, had the ICE never been developed? The good clean and natural waste accumulation on our streets, would quickly become a multi-storey compaction of waste, leading to the spread of natural/green pathogens, to the great acclaim of Greenpeace.

    I would contend that the Land Rover still has a lot going for it, chief among them is the use of an all aluminium body shell. The British Army, Marine commandos and the SAS throughout the Commonwealth of Nations, were until recent;y a user of this vehicle by choice. The specialist arms able to resort to its own determination of equipment, outside the Armies normal supply channels. The very early Range Rovers were basically farmers utility vehicles for the lord and lady farmers. Hence, the fully independent wheel articulation must be seen to be believed. They are used as, and are expected to last as, farm equipment, and not for nightclub runs.

      It was a huge problem, automobile vs the horse far less pollution.. not to mention all the diseases from horse waste and just think it was tracked in everywhere

Your narration always has lots of get-up-and-go. But maybe you could start a Go Fund Me for a trip to Britain to see the restorers and consigners there. For "WYR" -1- Rather a '42 Willys Jeep. That's the type my dad worked on while serving in the motor pool of Genl Patton's Army in North Africa & Sicily -2- Rather the J-10...its looks are still handsome after all these years.

      The math doesn’t add up doesn’t it it must metastasized in the stomach or something.. It didn’t say how much a horse drinks in a day.. super interesting none the less
      I got in a debate with somebody on Facebook about pollution, car vs horse.. and honestly that might be a topic for discussion one day if I can come up with enough stuff to say about it.. one wouldn’t think a horse being a major cause for pollution but could you imagine any major city take your pick whichever one. All of the cars are horses. There is horse manure literally everywhere, in the streets people walk in the streets and track it into all the story fronts... with waste generally comes disease. It was a huge problem

      They say horses need to eat about 2 percent of their body weight in dry food/feed, so a 1,000 pound horse eats 20 pounds of dry feed, so a bit of that is hay I guess with whatever else, wet that down and it doesn't seem to far fetched
