"I don't know whether this is meant to be sad or happy", you say.
But you do. You're feeling exactly what this song is trying to convey: emotional overload. Catharsis.
It's a beautiful Christmas surrounded by living hell. A moment of peace in a war that never ends. The desperate hope of a soldier far from home.

Well said. I can only imagine how it would feel to live through a time like that but I'm sure it would be all the emotions just like that. I feel the song and the video really highlights humanity persevering in the darkest of times. And that is both joyous because of the humanity that shines through, and sad because of the backdrop of hell it's panted against.

Well first of all Sabaton is a swedish band so it's a swedish accent you're hearing.
Second, this song is both happy and sad. War, especially that kind of trench warfare where each side pretty much just try to outlast the other side, is probably among the most horrific places to be and still there was this spark of humanity left in the soldiers. They still had the ability to, for one day, see "the others" as human too, see that they were really no different from themselves and for that one day they decided to ignore the orders from their superiors and insted of being soldiers they were just being men. That's what makes this song, in all the sadness, give a glimmer of hope that even in the darkest hour the light of Humanity can still shine bright.
There are several songs you have before you now that you've discovered Sabaton, a few examples are "En livstid i krig" - from their Gothenburg concert, it's in swedish so you need captions on but it's worth it, "No bullets fly" (animated video) and Devil Dogs (a faster paced song about how the US Marines got their nickname).
Last, if you want a really beautiful christmas song you ought to check out Pentatonix - The Prayer, if you don't know them it's an accapella band so the only instruments they use are their voices and they're unbelievably good.

thats the perversion of the whole situation back then in 1914. Meeting the "enemy", sharing some hours of peace together, even play football or share gifts...and a few hours later, you try to kill each other again...its...grotesque?

He's using Scottish R's in this song, he doesn't do that normally but the side he's sitting on are the Scots so that explains that. The truce was between Scots, Frenchmen and Germans.
It's absolutely NOT in any way a Swedish accent. Not even a little bit.

    • @martin6181
      @martin6181 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@michaelmay5453 Could have been if it wasn't for the fact that Joakim, Hannes and Pär were german soldiers, Chris was british and Tommy was french. Those rolling r's are indeed swedish, it's what's called "rikssvenska" and is common from småland and up in sweden but predominant in the Stockholm region. Now he may have emphasized the R's for annunciation purposes but they are very swedish.

Sabaton videos must be viewed to the end, much like Nightwish songs. There are always cookie crumbs. The blond soldier who first comes out of the trench, is Hannes Van Dahl, drummer for Sabaton, and husband of Floor Jansen, of Nightwish. Floor is the soaring soprano voice that you cut off at the last part of the song. Sabaton music is actual songs of battles and things from different wars. Their stadium concerts explode with the audience singing along. I expect this song will be like that. "We were all Friends."

    This is sabatons speciality:
Adressing history while communing through power metal. Lyrics that describe the scene and set the passion.
Whod have thought a band from.Sweden would make such an impact.
And the subject of this song? Only truce of its kind to EVER happen in war. Never again before or since had there been such an about-face showing of humanity.
Glad you love it. Sabatons magic works wonders

Thank you for doing Saboton’s Christmas Truce, Saboton is one of my favorite Bands including Nightwish. Quick Note: Floor Jansen was singing over the ending credits, and she is also is married to the currant Drummer of Saboton. Now Saboton is not political but sings of military sacrifices and heroics throughout history. The “ Lest We Forget” on the cross is a representation of an actual cross that marks the battlefield where this unofficial Christmas Truce happened in 1914 . Saboton has a history channel that well give you the meaning behind a lot of their songs. They’re catalog is very deep a few suggestions, Bismarck ( official music video), No Bullets Fly, or Night Witches official animated video. They actually combine their history of each song with the music. Try to watch No Bullets Fly all the way to the end as there is a real connection from the song subject matter to present day. I want to thank you again for doing my request to this song. Sorry I can’t give you the links I’m a really old Metal Rock Head and just don’t know how. A friend of mine got me to your Patreon page so I could join but unfortunately I can’t get back there to thank you. Part of why the Christmas Truce happened was soldiers seeing more of themselves in their enemies vs their own leadership. To the leaders the soldier in the trench was just a number. Basically send 10,000 to attack the enemy if they die in battle send another 10,000 tomorrow. This really comes across in the Sabaton song The Price of a Mile.

"24. December 1914: Late on Christmas Eve, the British Expeditionary Force heard the German troops singing Christmas carols in the trenches opposite and saw lanterns and small Christmas trees along the trenches. Messages were shouted to each other between the trenches. The next day, British and German soldiers met and exchanged gifts, took photos and some even played soccer. It was a rare but magical moment of peace and harmony in the midst of one of the most gruesome events of the 20th century. "

"I don't know if this is supposed to be sad or happy" -- exactly. It's both. For one night, one Christmas, everyone lay down their guns and was just kind. Fully in the knowledge that tomorrow they'll be ordered back to killing each-other. It's a moment of joy and peace in the middle of a storm of brutality.

I’ve watched a lot of reactions s to this song and my favorite part is right after the guitar solo. Everyone is jamming out because it’s so catchy, but then it starts flashing the dead bodies and then putting the cross up and everyone always changes their tone immediately. Sabaton showed the bright and happy side of this while also demanding respect for the loss and showing the weight of the situation still. I absolutely love it.

The Christmas Truce 1914 occured between german and (mostly) british troops:
On december 23rd after both sides recieved countless gifts from their homeland (the british from their king himself the germans mostly from their towns and families) the need and wish for peace was gigantic... and even if it was only to open packages and sing in peace.
At one time a correspondant of the new york times wrote that the germans managed to get a choclate cake over no mans land to the british lines (what ofc gladly got accepted by them)
A while after a german shouted over that theyd like to sing charols and asked the brits to please not shoot - what the brits respected. After the germans finished their charols they shouted over for the brits to join in to which the brits replied theyd rather die than sing in german, beginning to sing their own versions of the charols instead (to which the germans responded by singing themselves resulting in a sort of "singing contest" along the lines, made even more spectacle by dozens of foldable christmas trees the germans got via mail and hundreds of candles)
The next day at many sections of the front the wish to burrow the dead was shouted over the trenches... and to the amazement of all many soldiers, after a short confirmation to hold fire, acctually jumped out the trenches and, without weapons walked openly through the killzone, trusting the very man that wanted to kill them a day earlier blindly with their lifes
This was met in kind by the respective enemy and soon soldiers from all sides (no matter if officer or enlisted) exchanged gifts, played football, sang, held mass, got drunk or grilled together
On one part saxons jumped the trench, walked over to the english scrambeling into position, told then they didnt want to fight today and gave them beer for what they got pudding in exchange
The scots played soccer against the germans, though without a goal or a referee so its not possible to tell who won
During the next days however the truce was over and the killing continued... though on most sections forced by commanding generals and seldom by choice... its said that some scottish/german sections held out against their orders until new year, reopening the conflict by shooting into the air 3 times, answered by 2 german shots (mostly it ended on the 26th)

The truce lasted for two days but when their superior officers found out the soldiers on sll sides were punished. Some were transfered out, some ran,not wanting to fight. And the rest were shot right there for refusing orders to restart the battle once again. The soldiers didnt want to kill those they had met.

Swedish. Its a swedish accent. The way we sound when we dont try to pronounce Rs the english way.. Most swedish singers try to sound as american/english as possible.
Edit: Funnily though, an english girls once had me say "thirty-three and a third" and she laughed. Afterwards she told me i sounded Irish.
And ive heard northern englishmen say that we sound scottish when saying some swedish sentences that also mean that same. "Kom in i mitt hus" - come in to my house. sc:Bairn =sw: barn =child ect.
So anyways.. i get why its not so easy to know and i dont mind if you confuse the accent. Id happily be confused as an irish or a scottish person!

This truce actually took place at christmas 1914 during ww1. It wasn't something ordered by the military command but happend spontaneous where the German soldiers began singing and the Brithish responded. After the truce many soldiers refused to go back fighting which is very understandable. However it wasn't popular within the military command on both sides and many soldiers got executed for not obeying orders.

Sabaton is a Swedish band that writes and sings about Actual historic events, battles, moments of heroism and wars.
They will be releasing their 10th studio album on March 4th 2022.
Nice thing about them is that their video's never blocked so it's TH-cam safe. (except for some Wacken video's that gets blocked by Wacken)
If you really want to go down the Sabaton rabbit-hole, I would recommend these:
(These are all from the Sabaton Channel, and they never block videos so it's safe to use)
[live at Woodstock 2012]: Ghost Division, 40:1 and Uprising
[Great Tour Live Videos]: En Livstied I Krig (make sure to turn subtitles on), Red Baron, Swedish Pagans, Primo Victoria, Fields of Verdun, Devil Dogs & Angels Calling
[Lyric videos]: Attack of the dead men, In Flanders Fields, 82nd All the way, Sparta, Shiroyama and The lost betallion
[Music Video's]: Bismarck, Steel Commanders, Defence of Moscow, Livgardet (make sure to turn subtitles on), Fields of Verdun, Rourke's Drift, Screaming Eagles, Uprising & Seven Pillars of wisdom
[Animated History Video's]: Night Witches and No Bullets Fly (not animated music video's, the animated history/story video's)
    [Covers]: Kingdom Come [Offical video]
and I'm sure people told you but in case, Sabaton have another channel (Sabaton History Channel) where they do a deep dive into the history behind the songs with Indy Nidell.

You should do some research of history behind Christmas Truce

  • @stuartpentney2776
    @stuartpentney2776 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The sad thing is about Christmas Day 1914, not every section of the western front had a truce. Some sections continued fighting, others used the day to bury the dead that was left in no mans land from the fighting.
The leaders of the units that had the truce moved the men around so that the following year this would never happen, they even went as far as issue a standing order that anyone attempting such an act of "treason" would be shot in front of a firing squad.
Though I would highly recommend the Sabaton History Channel if you want to know the stories behind any of the Sabaton songs including the full story of the Christmas Truce 1914.

There are many more songs from Sabaton to check out like: Bismarck, To hell and back, 82nd all the way, No bullets fly and many more.
Their songs are about researched events and happenings during warfare what makes them stand out as a band telling history.
By the way: The singer Joakim Brodén is swedish with czech roots and yes, his voice is amazing.
You won´t regret listen to more songs from more of Sabaton and they also have their own TH-cam channel "Sabaton History" where they tell the facts behind the songs.
    Greetings from Germany,
    Michael

For that little extra background, try Sabaton's Christmas Truce with animated video - it's very good. Sabaton released only on the 8th December. Well worth watching in my humble. Loved your reaction, love you hair...claret and blue?.... Up the Villa!

If you are not familiar with the Christmas Truce of 1914 (during World War I), you should look into it. It was a truly remarkable occurrence; one that will likely not be repeated again.

Sad or Happy? Both... a moment of peace in horror, but knowing that the horror will return and killing people who were friends just hours before.... while the story itself is sweet it also shows the horror of war... frankly brilliant.

It is not only an amazing video, which is better produced than many war films. Nor is it just a video against the horrors of war.
It's a beautiful reaction of what can exist even in war. It's a shame you missed Floor Janssen in the credits.

The soldiers of the Christmas truce found out, that they actually had more in common with the poor bastard in the other trench, than with their own generals!
In the Christmas of 1915, the generals couldn't have that! So there was no repeat of the 1914 Christmas truce on this large scale, as the artillery kept firing ... Some DID come out of their trenches, but was mostly instantly killed by the enemy soldiers. No moment of peace in a war that'll never end ... Until 11 o'clock, 11th of November, 1918 ... War to end all wars, indeed ...

Nice reaction! My eyes always tear up with this video! Let’s be so happy we live in this looong time of peace nowadays! Hauntingly touching story, these men could have been friends, but as always in history the leaders forced them to kill each other… if you like rock music, maybe try out the young girls of The Warning, three sisters from Mexico, aged 17 to 21, they ate awesome… try their new singles Choke, Evolve or Animosity… these songs have very nice live versions on their YT channel that will not get blocked… Happy New Year, 🍀 greetings from Germany 👍🤘

Melancholic is the word you're looking for. Its happy and sad, men get a well deserved respite from such horror in a moment of beautiful reconciliation between enemies where they mourn their dead, reflect on their grizzly experiences and worst of all, dread its continuation.

He's Swedish but as us Swedes do not have a native English accent that happens. I grew up with a Scottish girl and married her, my accent comes from that. She died of cancer leaving me with two kids. Both of my kids have a Scottish accent, one more than the other.
It's miss Glasgow and I miss my wife, 30 years and not one jot or tittle went away from that, I am as much her husband today as I ever was.
But yeah, all Swedes, both them and me. If you saw me you'd go "oh yeah, that's a Swede" that is how Swedish I am with my 7'1 328lb self.

The "Christmas Truce" occurred in reality at some points along the front in WWI. Soldiers first shared Christmas songs from their trenches and then ventured out into no man's land where they greeted each other, exchanged items and played football. Military leadership was so concerned about the soldiers getting along that they threatened harsh penalties for any soldiers who "fraternized with the enemy".
As a former combat arms soldier I can tell you that in my experience combat soldiers are usually just young men who have no inherent desire to harm anyone. To avoid the obscenity of war citizens need to keep self serving, megalomaniac politicians and misnomered "elite" under control. They are the fundamental problem, IMHO.

Sabaton is the best teacher of History you will ever have (even have their own History Channel which is excellent). They tell stories of the human experience by those who were there for these great event and the human experience is without any opinion or judgements. You would love the song En Livstid I Krig Live (th-cam.com/video/WBs3G1PvyfM/w-d-xo.html) but put on the Closed Captions for English as the lyrics are gut wrenching. This band doesn't glorify war as some idiots claim, rather they recount the great events many of them war related that we have long forgotten and failed to learn from but always done with superior artistry.

I think most who fight wars don't agree with them.
Wars shouldn't be fought. But some need to be. It's a tragedy to lose human life. Some wars may have saved more lives than they took. Who can say.

Bittersweet is the word I'd use. We all have a job to do, mine is killing you. But for one day let's put the fight aside. There will plenty of time tomorrow. Let's take a day off. I don't hate you. Just doing my job, but let me show there's no hate in my heart tonight.
