Replacing The Serpentine Belt, Tensioner and Idler Pulley On My 1998 Chevy Cheyenne C1500

  • The belt tensioner pulley has been going out on this old truck for a few years. It had been squeaking for a while then finally started whining loudly. This was a fairly simple job. Sorry for the camera placement in some of the video. It’s difficult to show the removal of the belt so please feel free to ask questions. I appreciate you watching my video.     Thank you for your video! I have spun the lock washer with a screw driver. And tapping it with a small hammer like 40 times. It got easier to spin, but it didn’t move off the screw thread.

    Your video saved my Butt!! Mine is making the humming sound too I wonder if it's the belt itself or the tensioner making the whining sound thank you for showing this in the video before you remove the belt I thought it could be a bad alternator or AC compressor making that noise but it turns out it is the belt. Turns out it was the alternator humming.... So I replaced the idler pulley, tensioner pulley, belt and the alternator! Runs smooth now wow!! THANK YOU AGAIN FOR SHOWING REUSING THE WASHER!! I cant believe the new pulleys dont come with a washer!

    I thought the idler puller was reverse thread? It appears to be right hand thread in the video.

    Mine was chirping so I changed the pulley tensioner still did it changed the belt and idle pulley still did it come to find out got idle pulley with no grease in the bearings

    Thx for showing lock washer issue on idler pulley. Guess you "carefully" push small tabs back into bolt threads on new replacement ??

      Correct. You can carefully bend them back to where the washer can screw back onto the bolt. Thanks for the comment/question and for watching my video!

      @@workinbootsproductions5008 This is very helpful, thanks! I was thinking I would have to replace the bolt entirely with a separate washer. I'll work on carefully lifting the tabs and reusing what I have. The bolt and lock washer are pristine, the old pulley just needs to go! Thanks very much.

    Question I installed an idler pulley myself and I didn't really check for that small piece you took out but it's working as normal. Do you think The part I bought didn't have that?

      Hello. If you are referring to the lock washer, your pulley may or may not have come with it. You should have gotten a new bolt with it. If the pulley came out of the box with the bolt inserted and unable to slide out, it likely had the washer with it. If the bolt, spacer and pulley were all loose in the box, you probably did not get a washer. If you still have your old pulley, I would remove the washer and install it on the new pulley when time permits. These washers are difficult to find at auto parts stores but can usually be found at a salvage yard.
      The retaining washer is wider than a typical tabbed washer and, as I understand it, it also acts as a dust cover and it may help with friction. I honestly don’t know if you’ll have any problems without it but I kinda doubt it. I hope this helps.

    Do you know how much torque the tensioner bolt needs?

      Sorry for the late reply. I believe the torque spec is 37 ft lbs. I didn’t think to mention it in the video because after many years of doing this type of work, you just get a feel for how much to tighten these types of components. If it were a more critical part, such as a cylinder head, I always follow the manufacturer’s suggested torque specs. I hope this helps.
