This film is a must watch,One of the best performance of Kamal hassan,and his 100th Film,his first screenplay,first film as a producer....And the climax is inspired from the movie Graduate(Dustin Hoffman)
Also as Rick asked in 3:43 if the character plays the violin or Kamal playing it for the score - Kamal really learnt to play violin for his role. And while many of us musicians know that violin is one of the difficult instruments to learn!

I think you are referring to 1985 Telugu movie Swati Muthyam in which Kamal Hasaan acted as having some kind of mental retardness. This movie was later dubbed in Tamil as "Chippikkulmuthu" ( which means - pearl inside clam shell). We watched the Tamil version in theatres as they did not dub it in Malayalam. Songs of this movie are evergreen hits. There were other simiular super hit Telugu movies those days including Sagara Sangamam which was directly dubbed in Malayalam with fresh music and lyrics (not word to word translation). Worth watching these - both original and dubbed, if you care.

If you get a chance, watch another film called "Kasi" acted by Tamil film actor Vikram who also acted in few Hindi films like 'Raavan". But I thought you forgot to mention another sensational film which had won Oscar film titled " Scent of a Woman" where Al Pacino delivered as a blind person.
