Remember, this is the series that the protagonist of Like A Dragon and Infinite Wealth is basing his mental interpretation of combat on.
That it is true, but that is such weird thing to say. As if Dragon Quest/Warriors didn't create the template and mold for most Japanese role playing games and remain a flagship series within that space for decades to come. Selling people on this game through references found in Yakuza rather than its historic nature and quality of the game itself.
@@samueljudie1370 i'm curious how much fart sniffing happened in the writing of that comment. the reason why the comment mentions yakuza is because Mort covered those games on the channel.
@@samueljudie1370 huh?
@@samueljudie1370 That's one weird thing to take issue with.
And who says i'm trying to sell people on the game?
@@Llortnerof i’m just as confused by their comment.
Mort going on vacation! We are truly in the end times everybody😅
Wasn't a big DQ fan growing up (more of a Final Fantasy kid for sure) but as I got older I really grew to appreciate the DQ series more. This one is great. Just a classic old school JRPG with a lot of quality of life improvements, better graphics, great music and surprisingly good voice acting. Being able to customize a party is great and you can change their jobs later on, so if you want a fighter who can heal, turn your priest into the warrior class once they learned all the spells you want.
They are like comfort food for me.
I was also a Final Fantasy kid. Didn't get into DQ until I was looking for a more classic style JRPG and Dragon Quest 11 just came out. I was really impressed and love that the older ones are coming back kinda like the FF pixel remasters.
One of the first games I'm going to pick up when it goes on sale.
Agreed. This price is too steep

Feels like a £30 game new to me, rather than £50
RPG of the Year contender for me. If you like them old school, the game is perfection. Even if you're used to super heavy, involved modern games like Baldur's Gate 3, the story-lite, no frills "Just explore and go an an adventure" vibes are a great palette cleanser that just sucks the hours away as you wander, fight random battles, and go "Oh, I wonder what's in that chest? Hope it's not a mimic..." or "oh hey, a new town, I wonder what equipment it's got...". Especially later on the game really opens up and the world is your oyster to explore and delve. Just last night I saved a town that was tormented by a serpent demanding maidens as human sacrifice.
Hey mortym, I’m a fairly new jrpg player, but out of the ones i have played, i have to saw dragon quest as a series is my absolute favorite.
Ive been playing the 3 remake blind, with no guide and trying to explore everything on my own. I’m currently right at 30 hours of play time, and I think I’m around half way, but maybe less just by guessing from the information I have on the original games (its had multiple versions before this newest remake)
A few things to add. The monster area is a nice other little distraction.
Leveling up our party is fun with the way stat growth changes based off your character’s personality type, which can be changed either permanently or temporarily with the use of specific items. accessories can change it temporarily, and books change it permanently. Also, accessories only change your personality if theyre in the primary accessory slot, it wont change if its in the secondary slot.
I think my absolute favorite system in this game is how exploration work. At the start you have an option if you want to turn on quest markers or not. I decided not to and boy oh boy and im happy i did that. So after you talk to an npc, and they say something useful, you can press start on your controller to save that dialogue to your memory. Later, you can open your menu and press the recall option, to re-read that dialogue you saved. This way instead of having a quest log, you actually get the feeling that your finding your own way through your quest and using your wits. Its such a simple solution that ive never seen a game do, and it adds SO much to the experience and sense of adventure. Talk. To. Everybody.
As a person who only became a jrpg this year, and before really enjoyed western rpgs and crpgs, - the year i turned 30 - i think i can say this was fully worth the $60
Man, JRPGs are something I've been playing my whole life and is one of my top genres for games.
If you haven't, check out Xenoblade 2 and 3. The gameplay is way different than normal turn based JRPGs but is incredibly fun once you get it figured out. The stories are amazing (3 literally made me cry, something no game has ever done before) and they some of the best Switch games available.
Outside of Xenoblade Dragon Quest is my favorite JRPG series. I love that they haven't gone the Final Fantasy route where everything gets changed and tweaked and turn based combat is thrown out the window for some new system. You know what you're getting with DQ and it's always great!
That sounds so dope saving specific conversations is the best way to go honestly, and it maintains the immersion that markers can sometimes remove
@ dude I absolutely LOVE this system. It gives meaning to npc conversations and adds to the immersion of going on an epic quest.
I never really thought a 2D jrpg from the nes era could be immersive but i was wrong. It’s just a different sense of immersion i guess.
The world of jrpgs is pretty new to me but this game ROCKS.
@@Sapient_Pearwood so i tried xenoblade chronicles 1 back in july. I had a pretty severe back injury at work and had to miss a few weeks (with worker’s compensation thankfully - and work was happy to give it to me, its nice working for good people who care) and my nephew gifted me a copy of xbc1. I got a decent way into it but it just didn’t click for me. Maybe it was the pain from the injury or maybe i just genuinely didn’t like it. I also got xbc3 but haven’t tried it since playing the first one. I only got xbc3 because walmart had it for less than $10 brand new - the case just had some cosmetic damage.
The other jrpgs ive like are:
persona 3,4,5
Metaphor ReFantazio
Octopath traveler 2 (didn’t like 1 as much for some reason)
Fire emblem 3 houses.
And final fantasy 12. - what i liked about 12 was the hidden areas/bosses/weapons and loot. It gave a real reason to explore and meaningful exploration is my favorite thing in all of gaming.
I also really really liked the gambit system.
I’ve played those games over the last 6 years or so, but it wasn’t until this year where I realized i liked jrpgs and that those games weren’t exceptions.
I also didn’t finish a lot of those but played enough to know i liked them.
It wasn’t until my dragon quest fixation that made me realize the whole genre was my jam now.
@@FunkyPunk1995My favorite by far was FF12, i know so many people hated on it cuz no love interest and they thought main character was forgettable. Dude the GAMBIT system! Best thing ever, that and the fact battles werent random, just wish they all were like that. Happy that game came out before all this online crap destroyed gaming in general. Old school rpgs for the win.
After playing this over the weekend, this text I sent to my friend sums up my feelings on DQIII:
Dragon quest is better than having Christmas every day
I’m a classic turn based JRPG fan through and through and DQ just has that smile factor. The music, the familiar sound effects, the simple but fun turn based grind, the gorgeous new pixel art - more than worth my $60 especially with the new content added to the presentation and quality of life overhaul
All that said, for DQ or JRPG newcomers, I would still point them towards XI first. But honestly, I’m just so happy to have some DQ love in the timeline rn
XI was a love letter to classic JRPGs in every sense. Masterpiece of gaming.
@ absolutely 🙏
I played Dragon Warrior/Quest III in all its american iterations throughout my life. One thing to note about the remake is that the game is almost completely new aside from the monsters and story. The maps are different in all cases - some just slightly and others significantly.
I remember playing this in junior high. Might pick it up for nostalgia's sake when it goes on sale.
my first RPG as a kid was the original Dragon Warrior (lol) on the NES. DQ3 is this cultural landmark and benchmark for console RPGs of the time. Still holds up pretty well for an NES RPG, but this remake really does give it a nice facelift.
I still have difficulty remembering to call it Dragon Quest! I'm like, I have the NES cartridges, they say Dragon Warrior damnit!
@ it’s funny how both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest had to deal with the nonsense that was early 80s-90s localization lol
I’m an old school RPG nerd, very excited for this one ❤
I loved Dragon Quest 8 (or was it 7?) back on PS2. Dragon Quest XI was even grander.
I'm interested to try this remake of an older DQ game but I'll wait for a sale. $60 just seems too much for these old school JRPGs imo. 😅
8, 7 was a PSX title
@@samueljudie1370 oh, i get the numbers mixed up. Whichever the ps2 game was with Jessica and Yangus in it.
@@Makoto03 8!
Adoring this game rn. Guys, Dragon Quest is very worth trying. Glad I got into it a few years ago.
Thanks for the video. Glad to see your take on this one. I & II will be released next year. I never got a chance to play them when the originally released, so I'm hoping they all get remade. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
bro, it looks like star ocean second story remake.
i think i'll have to play this. i also know nothing about dragon quest and haven't played any of them but this art style im a MASSIVE fan of. absolutely wonderful
Many years ago I decided to play the entire Dragon Quest series and to this Day 3 is still one of my favorite games of all time, especially playing it immediately after 1&2, the connection between them blew my mind at the time, and I can only imagine how it was for people who played it in the 80s, generally not a fan of everything under the sun being remade however
I agree that remaking/remastering anything and everything is not great but this really is a perfect candidate. A beloved classic that is so old that a large percentage of current gamers have never touched it and even for those that have its been a long while. It's even great for people like myself who were on the Final Fantasy train instead. I didn't start dragon quest until 11 and, if the others are as well done (I know tech has changed a lot but besides that) then I have a great series ahead of me.
@@Blasted2Oblivionif you're interested in playing this I highly recommend playing 1&2 first as they are a part of a trilogy and 3 hits very hard when you start to see the connections between it and the first 2 and additionally I will admit I'm a bit of a hypocrite since the version of this that I played initially was a remake for the gbc, so while I do agree this game may well be an excellent candidate for remake I do find it alarming just how prevalent remakes are getting
Will definitely buy it... love the way it looks.
Nice! Starting this one today myself. Hope you like it.
the price of this game here in brazil is absolutelly insane, maybe in 10 years when it drops from 60 dollars to 10 i will buy it lol.
yeah the price seems abit too high for a remake of an older JRPG. You can buy full AAA titles for the same price.
I'm waiting for a sale as well.
Let's pirate it meanwhile
Ta foda comprar joguinho mano slk
@OtaldeMaciel Square não tem nem vergonha na cara de cobrar 250 reais num jogo de 35 anos atrás que provavelmente gastaram 5 reais e dois pino de cocaína pra remasterizar.
@@mateussalvador2103Depends on the scope of the remaster honestly. Some of the comments are saying it has some pretty unique systems even by today’s standards
There's this Game called Elin - I feel its like stardew valley Turn based JRPG but with brutal roguelike mechanics. Number of players playing upon its released was pretty high for a indie game that didn't seem to have much marketing. Do consider checking it out! It's the prequel of another known game called Elona.
I'll take a shot at this when i'm in the mood for some retro JRPG gaming, but not at that price. I'm willing to bet that i'll get a good deal on a second hand copy on the switch in no time.
Ah dragon quest the school gets no older than that!
I played the SFC remake of DQIII. Its an amazing game, but definitely very much an 8bit era. The big draw and innovation is its huge explorable world, you can see how in the 80s that was mindblowing but modern players prob wont even notice anything special. Its a great game, the new skin is amazing but its bones are very old, If u love jrpgs, DQ or want to play something w a joyful nostalgic simplicity then its the game for you. If you want anything modern at all then maybe wait until you start jonesing for nostalgia.
I've never played any Dragon Quest games before, just the demo of DQ XI that left me uncertain whether I liked it or not. I am really liking DQ 3 remake instead.
I remember playing Dragon Warrior III and the ending stage blew my mind 😀 To be fair, their wasn't a lot of competition... But I really enjoyed this game. Dragon Warrior II felt like a disappointment after the original. But this one felt like it used the best parts of the original Dragon Warrior and the best parts of the original Final Fantasy as a starting point and built out an amazing game that eclipsed both.
I can't imagine it being as good as I remember, but I did buy the remake 😊
great on steam deck
Now we need a remaster of Journey of the Cursed King. [It's graphically muddled enough to deserve the high-pixel treatment[
Thanks for the vid! I'll definitely get this in the future when it's on discount
I would literally skeet if they ever released a Radiant Historia remake similar to this
I grew up on Atari 2600. Nes snes and somewhat ps1. I did own DW 1. But clueless what to do, go. So tossed it aside. Ff1 was better at keeping gamer focused. Anyway looking forward to playing it.
I been a DQ fan for a long time, even struggeled my way through X with google translate.
But the price of this release hits me wrong.
I know this isnt a long game and as far as my knowledge goes they didnt add much to this release.
When this was first announced i hoped they would add 1 and 2 tot this, but that is getting a release by itself.
And i want to play them in chronological order,so im sadly enough gonna wait for the release if 1 and 2 before im gonna touch this one, the price is bonkers
I played the dqx offline great game. Gmg had this for 44.
@@sagepirotess6312 its a shame it will never be translated, such a great game
@@sjakkalul never say never. It's been translated to Chinese, Korean and Japanese now. Can either hope a company like xbox throws cash like they did for phantasy star online, or dq gains popularity and SE brings it globally in English.
We know what Ichiban is doing this weekend...
Looks good! You should try playing Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age, I really enjoyed that game.
Original DQ was the game that made me fall in love with RPGs and I loved all the NES games, and 11 which was the next time I played. I do want to play this remake.
"a review won't be eminent by ay means"
well, you've tricked me with metaphor.
I fully expect a 100% for this game before the week is out.
I probably wont even play more of it till like late December/Jan
@@MortismalGaming My comment was tongue in cheek ofc; I very much appreciate all of the content you put out and just wonder how you complete so many games so quickly.
Oh man this takes me back. I dumped so many dozens of hours into the GB Color version of this game when I was like 7 years old. Do you still get the Sage by class-changing from the joker class? That was such a mind blower when I found that for myself!
Can say the game interests me since I've always wanted to play them but never found a good entry point. This seems the most promising, with only the price being the issue. But can say I'll have it wish listed
I am not paying $60 to re-enjoy Dragon Quest from my childhood
If this was like, $30, I'd probably be happy to jump in
This isn't the game of your childhood. Buy it you cheapskate!
It was equivalent to at least 120 USD when the original was released.
Bit overpriced, yeah. And emulating it will give you HD graphics like experience if that’s the only thing you are buying this for.
@@solomani5959 These graphics are a much bigger upgrade from what you'd get with graphical filters over the NES original. (Even though those are cool.) You'd also miss out on the new content / QoL stuff. Up to you whether or not that's worth it, though.
so happy to see this game covered on this channel. I've been loving it.
Great vid morty! Boy did your dragonage video cause controversy haha😂😅
As a JRPG fan love seeing your thoughts on them, especially because you're not into them as much as some other kinds of rpgs and it's very refreshing to get new eyes on these things
I'm currently playing it and yes it's an amazing remake. I can't wait to get 1+2 next year. I recommend to play it in Draconian difficulty as well(you can change it at any time).
Id started playing this last weekend on the Switch. Its truely been fun. Ill admit the mass random battles i get back-to-back can be a bit brutal. Then again, after nine hours as this is my second overall Dragon Quest game id played, im having a blast.
Square Enix just keeps making bank off of remakes. How many times have the early FF and DQ games been remade at this point? These games do have a special place in my heart from being a part of my childhood, BUT not enough for me to keep buying them, especially at $60. I would rather they make new JRPGs with this old school style rather reiterating the same old games. Just my two cents.
Technically SE gets a pass on dq. They brought it to pc. Pcs themselves and handhelds like deck. So a huge new audience of gamers vs console or phone only.
They have, the Bravely Default series has seem some successes, but in this particular economy, banking on new IPs is extremely risky. That said, I am a firm believer in taking calculated risks sometimes....but I'm also understanding on perhaps waiting for a better economic period to really go balls out on some new stuff.
I’d commit heinous crimes for a DQ IX remake
It looks and sounds amazing. But speaking as someone who played DW3 on the NES to death back in the day, that boring spreadsheet retro combat system doesn't work for me anymore.
Personally I think it's only worth a 50% sale
Already finished it. Looking forward to it since the remake was originally announced.
This is the type of remake I want for FF4-6 but mainly for FF6. Just thinking about a remake of the Opera House scenes makes me excited.
No no. Sorry I want dq 4 to 9 before another ff remske
I love how the world map is unashamedly just our own planet. You can spot Europe, Africa, the Americas, Australia.
My issue with this remake (and older dragon quest tittles): Where's the animation for the attacks? I mean they could've added at least Golden sun type of angle or something because 60 dollars??!! DAMN thats expensive for that
My biggest issue is that I've played every version of Dragon Quest 3. It is my 2nd favorite Dragon Quest game. What exactly does this add to justify a 60 dollar price tag when I've already played this story out? Pretty graphics? One new character class? Doesn't feel much different from the Gameboy Color version or the mobile version (which was a downgrade from the GBC version). This doesn't feel like a remake made for fans of the franchise, but an overpriced way of gaining new players. I'm not getting it until it goes on deep discount.
Literally the ONLY thing that bugs me is that Dragon Quest 1 and 2 are coming out next year. AFTER 3 for some reason. The same problem I have with the recent Resident Evil remakes. 2 3 and 4 all good but skipped 1 in the RE engine.
3 is a prequel, it comes before 1 and 2 chronologically
Actually 3 is the start. Think of 3 as star wars episode 4. And 1 and 2 and the prequels
0:44 did you 100% the trip? Wheres the review Mort?
Soon
Xenogears and FFT HD-2D remake plz
The price of this game is nuts. It should have been 40, maybe 50 bucks at most. It's a remake that's not using new writing, new composition (in the sense that it's not composed newly, even if it's newly recorded), its sprites don't have full animations, its map and world assets are nothing new... And yet it's priced the same as something like Stalker 2 would be, or Baldur's Gate at launch? WHAT? Capcom, sq enix, Nintendo are all just nuts with their prices.
It is fully voice acted for the story NPC's etc, but generally I agree $60 for the PC version is rough.
Price is subjective. Saying that green man gaming had it on preorder for 44. So it was withen your price range.
Honestly, the selling price of most games is actually insanely low, but relatively: yes, this one seems pricey.
Apples and oranges games. Even then do not buy on release and wait for a discount, especially on PC. A non-issue really.
This is my main issue. 80 cad for a 2d remake no thanks. I’m waiting till all these are like 50 percent off
free comment =)
Have you considered playing/reviewing Ixion? People have compared it to Frostpunk, and I find the premise very interesting.
No current plans, but never say never
Does this version come with the game boy color content?
I love everything about it except the price. I will not pay 60 euros for what is at its bones still a NES game.
Been meaning to grab this on switch but i dont know if the base price at $60 is acceptable lol
I have been a huge jrpg fan ever since I could remember. I remember walking into my cousin's living room and my uncle playing final fantasy 7. I was flabbergasted at how freaking awesome it was. I love seeing you checking out jrpgs here and there. Dragon quest has been my newest obsession since I tried 11 a few years back.
I like RPG's, but not such a big fan of just getting some random companions or making your own, since that usually means their interactions will be incredibly generic.. Hope that's not the case in this game?
Haven't played it, but i'd assume there is no interaction whatsoever. Protagonist is the face of the party, the rest is just henchmen along for the ride, most likely due to the limitation on the cardridge back then, hence less dialogue in general, let alone for multiple characters. Anything else would be a pleasant surprise, but i wouldn't bet on it.
Unless they've made some pretty drastic changes to encounter design, I'm not very interested. The old JRPG grind just doesn't work in 2024.
Anyone know how egregious the censorship is? I was very excited for this but hearing it was censored the very year of Akira Toriyama’s passing made me feel disgusted.
They censored the dressing style of some of the characters.
Thanks for highlighting this game! As a fan of the series, I've been looking forward to it. The only reason I haven't picked it up yet is that pricetag.... woof. I have the money, but I don't want to reward the publisher by buying at full price. It's just not right.
Not a game I expected you covering but here’s it as far as the TH-cam jazz. DQ3 has been remade/remastered many times and it is one of the biggest games ever in Japan. We won’t have the Dragon Quest team for much longer, so remaking these while some are still alive is nice. For the general people out there… Dragon Quest is the innovator so many of your favorite games copied from. Not saying it will be revolutionary for anyone playing it now, but many of the things people call tropes in Japanese games came from this series specifically.
Gronk!
Been playing this on my switch for about 4 hours (though not quite sure how much of those I was napping in 😆) and I just wanna point out how TINY the sprites and text look. It strains my eyes to look at such tiny things so I'm a little annoyed.
Watching this review video on PC at fullscreen, it looks quite normal, however. But would never give up the comfort of being able to lay down any which way while gaming.
So sad, you should got a deck!
I would have got the game if it wasn't for turn-based battles - I just find them such a drag, and makes the game feel like two separate games forced together. I hate random encounters too the reason I couldn't be bothered with FF7.
Lol I bet your a metaphor refantazio gamer and that's turn based.
Remade TH-cam Jazz 🎶
Love this kind of art style..combo of 2D and 3D.
will wait for massive discount, with the localization and removal of gender/art being altered though minor gripe anything that alters a piece or art or media from the original creators vision (we all saw there thoughts on this. Think this should have been around £35-£40. Either way im impressed with the visuals.
I tried... but the combat. They couldn't even create character animations for attacks and magic... I just can't. Lets not talk about the price for just that! Insane...
Classic game remade for a modern audiance. Simple and fun, the way games should be.
the original dragon warrior iii was a classic that i've replayed several times, hoping this version is great too. i think maybe some of the remakes had thief but the nes version didn't, so 2 new classes to check out! i love the class changing system and can let you experience all the classes in a single playthrough
The physical copy joined my 24 game Final Fantasy collection on the shelve.
Im already about 25 hours in on switch. Frickin loving it
$60, and you can't see your characters in battle. Big no for me.
So it's first person during enemy turns? I don't like at all. It just seems like a lazy way to avoid animations.
Been watching gaming vids on YT since day 1 and you are by far the most thorough and thoughtful. Always look forward to your notifications. Keep up the good work mate. 🤌💪
Seeing you checking out DQ I like to say I always keep wondering what you would think of Chrono Trigger which I consider a milestone game (and my all time favourite alongside Baldur's Gate 2). Especially considering its role with so many mechanics which were way ahead of its time back then. But there is no HD remake of it yet...
Been desperately waiting for this for a while, but I can't justify paying that asking price. Waiting for a sale and then will happily purchase it.
I know this is an old game but blank slate parties with no story/character of their own really kills my ability to be excited about this. I couldn't finish DQ9 after I realized your MC is silent and your entire party is just hired silent mercenaries.
Not worth 59.99.
Me first!!
First!!
This hd 2d style is not that appealing to look at
The price of this game is nuts. It should have been 40, maybe 50 bucks at most. The Nostalgia Tax is high on this one
