Wow. I just found this video and it`s great. Every time I think I know Rhino, something like this comes on my YT wall. Though, I realy liked your sence of humor from the beginners videos, here, you are extremely professional :D I have one question after watching; can I create and then export all maps as texture? I mean, can I create an all-in pack for high quality texture and extract it?
At the moment Rhino doesn't have 2D texture generation from 3D geometry in the file (e.g. AO or Normal maps) if that is what you're looking for. You can however edit and save a 2D texture in the file through it's settings.
Hi Eva, I bet you ran out of the memory set for the displacement. The command line messages should tell you if that is what happened. Increase that value if your computer has the RAM... 1024 or 2048 is usually fine, and then try it again. If that isn't it, share a file on the forum to ask what's wrong please. discourse.mcneel.com/
I created a subd surface which wont allow for sub object displacement, so i use the command tonurbs turning it into a poly surface. After sub object selecting a surface and applying a texture the, the mesh details are greyed out and even tho it says displacement complete it never actually displaces. Any idea on whats wrong?
@12:45 in the vid you "show the mapping widget" - to control the size/position of the displacement map...but I don't see you hit any buttons/menus! How do you turn this very cool feature on/off please?
There are some icons in the Properties panel > Texture Mapping section for the current selection that allow you to show or hide the mapping widget. You can also use the commands MappingWidget and MappingWidgetOff for any current selection.
How to close the wall between the texture and the surface base in the example Granite Texture 0:55 sec? I saw that you were get to generate the displacement with walls on the edges in the example Swapping textures 14:14 seg...I will be grateful for your feedback. Thank you
The closed wall is due to the object being a sub-object in the handle example. The plane at the beginning is a surface with open edges and so it's render mesh doesn't stay connected to any adjacent surface. If you started with a Box instead of a plane and then sub-object select just one face you could displace only that and the render mesh will stay joined to the adjacent sides of the box. I hope that helps.
Is there a way to apply a displacement map in Rhino that is based on a gradient? For example i want to create a grip in the middle part of a cylinder but not in the top or in the bottom (like what you can do in Grasshopper with the image sampler component).
Hi Marco, For that I'd either use the black values in the image texture to define where no displacement will occur or split and rejoin the cylinder to apply a sub-object displacement to only the middle section. Post a 3dm to the Rhino user forum if you need more help discourse.mcneel.com/

@@RhinoGuide Hi Sir, I followed your steps in your video, and see you can easy to active custom mesh. But in my Rhino 7, the custom mesh is always displayed disable, so I can't active it. Could you please tell the possible reason? Thanks very much!
@@RhinoGuide Hi Sir, I find out why custom mesh was always displayed disable, it is because I used one mesh plane. Is it possible to "custom mesh" function with mesh for "displacement" in the future? Thanks very much!

In Rhino 7 use QuadRemesh to make a SubD from your mesh and then use ToNURBS on that to get a polysurface that you can export as Step. If the mesh is quads and not too dense you can use ToSubD > ToNURBS instead. Post to the Rhino forum if you need to share a file for more help... discourse.mcneel.com/

Thank you for your vid. I can not see my displacement showing any material after aplying, it is still 2D flat for me...

Is there any option to choose svg file to use as texture ?
Why Rhino don't have node material editor ?
I'd like to see that too using Grasshopper as the interface. There is work being done in this area but it isn't available yet... it's on the list.
All thanks! :)

Hi, How do I enable the visibility for the xyz (blue /yellow/green ) controls that allows you to scale sub elements
That's the Gumball manipulator. Click the word Gumball at the bottom of the UI on Windows Rhino and you'll see it when you have something selected.
