    All my designer suit jackets come from Goodwill $3 each. I've had them at least 15 years. Made well. Machine wash then hang to dry. I've paired them with pants, skirts and dresses too. Classics. Never go out of style. Love them.

    Heads up for those who are new to thrifting: I've been thrifting for 20+ years and never had an issue with bugs, so don't be frightened by the idea of them. You might come across a dead bug every now and then, but live ones are rare. Just don't get nasty looking cloth furniture, and be vigilant about cleaning hats and scarves. Or, just don't get certain items, just like MaCenna. ☺️

      How do you clean your hats?

    • @m.thompson3919
      @m.thompson3919 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@tpine2504 If it's something soft like a beanie, those can go in the washing machine. Some caps can handle that as well. For firmer hats like snapbacks and fedoras, you can soak/wash hats by hand in the sink with some hot water and detergent. Rinse it off with cold water to help it maintain it's shape. (Optional: After you rinse off the hat, dry it with a hair dryer on hot to help disinfect it even more. Just keep the hair dryer in motion so you don't overheat the fabric.) If the hat is made of leather, I would recommend googling instructions on how to clean it. Leather tends to be more high maintenance than other fabrics, and every type of leather has different cleaning instructions.

    The "what's it worth to you" advice was sooo good! I paid 14$ for a woodturned vase at Value Village and it was my favorite buy ever, I bought a huge fake bamboo tree for 12,50$ on a 50% sale in another thrift store, did I overpay for that vase?! Sure! But it was still worth it to ME. ;)

      Yes! That's what I was saying to myself too. I often pass on items that I like simply because the items are more than I'm willing to pay. Unfortunately I find that some thrift stores price the items far too high. I'd like to ask them if they want to sell it or store it? 🤔🤔👎👎

    • @erindixon2877
      @erindixon2877 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @atumnharbor, the heat of the sun will probably not get rid of the smell. Hanging a garment in the shade and letting it air out for a while works but you can do the same thing in your home on a shower rod. The point is to get air flow around the garment so the scent has a chance to decompose. Washing an item and hanging to dry works too if the item is washable. One other tip: to remove rust, use lemon juice on the rust spots and hang the item in a sunny window. It may take a few repeated applications of lemon juice but the rust will disappear. Rinse or wash the item in cold water to remove the lemon juice. This is the gentlest way I know for rust removal.

    Great job on the lamp! I always enjoy seeing your makeovers and creativity! Just an idea for cleaning old rugs, use a steam cleaner after baking soda and vacuuming. Also vinegar can get out old stains out of dishes and glasses, if you let it soak overnight! Another thing you can use is a mixture of water and tea tree oil and spray on wicker. Not sure if this is okay if you have animals, maybe check what the internet says about this.

    Loved the video, Macenna! ♥ Just a couple of FYIs - you can totally wash baskets; just don't leave them soaking. They do smell funny until they dry, but it works fine. Also, washing smelly fabric in really hot water will kill germs, but it will not necessarily take out odours. Hot water can set smells. I wash everything in cold water and it works great, saves money, and is better for the fabric. If that doesn't take out smells, the best way is to hang them outside for a few hours. Nothing like sunshine and fresh air to get rid of bad odours. :) Hope that's helpful!

      I always wash any cane items in warm soapy water. Use a small brush with soft long bristles to get into crevices. Work fairly quickly. Don’t let soak in the water as this will soften the cane and it will loose its shape. Water hyacinth baskets will get mushy and fall apart. Rinse in water and put outside in sun if possible .You can speed things up by using an old towel to wipe it down first.

    I'm a big collector of baskets, some I keep, some I give away or sell. I have found that you can submerge them in water, even soapy water. But you can't let them soak in water. I put mine in, swish it around until I don't smell the dust anymore. Then I rinse and put upside down on a cloth to dry. Sometimes if the basket is a little misshapen when I purchase it, I will put it in hot water and leave it a little longer. You can reshape some baskets and stuff them with towels to adjust their shape. I've never had one fall apart after words. I even wash the baskets if they've been sitting on my shelf and collected dust. I've done this with reed, grass, seagrass, wood, rattan, wicker, bamboo..... and probably others, I just can't remember them all. I can assure you that none have ever fallen apart. Try it with a cheap easter basket that you're not attached too. That way you can see for yourself. Love, love, love your video's. They are my go to on youtube lately.

    I love thrifting for pretty much everything: clothes, shoes, jewelry, purses, books, wall art, home decor, and dishes! I don't really thrift flip because I am not crafty like that but I do just like finding great items at the thrift store as is or in really great condition! So, I agree with all your reasons why thrifting can be a an awesome thing to do! I see it as a really fun treasure hunt if you will! The only item I would "flip" is a framed piece of wall art where I could spray paint it a different color- I regret not picking up this one piece that would have been for my daughter's room. The wood frame was painted a light green but the art itself was pretty pinks and blues. I didn't even think of it at the time to spray paint the wood part white but now I know and will consider that the next time I see a piece like that at the thrift store! That is a great tip about heating or freezing thrifted items to kill germs but I have never done that and have fared fine so far. I have just cleaned items with sanitizing wipes and Lysol spray! I am so jealous of your flips; I wish I could be just as crafty but never caught on to it

      3. I get my brushes from blick as well. I used a pretty wide one. Acrylic paint colors are solid Mars Black (blick brand) & parchment (from Michaels)
      4. I got the bedsheets from home goods so I don’t have a link.
      5. Yes the cover slips right over your comforter in the size that you need 🥰

    Best thing for basket dust is spray air duster for keyboards. If u must use something...for those and silk trees and silk plant dust use a spray bottle with 2/3 vinegar to 1/3 water. Vinegar and baking soda to wash stains off carpet and fabrics. For tough stains on carpet or rugs use vinegar and baking soda to scrub the stain then take a dry old towel (or one u can bleach later) and an iron on top of towel over wet spot low to med heat depending on how thick towel is and the towel will absorb the stain. Also dollar general makes a degreaser called purple power for 5 dollars it's about 2 gallons worth. It works amazingly for tough greasy spots above stove or on dishes pots pans and the top parts of stove. U can use it to mop as well. Also use it in sink with hot water and soak your metal mesh-like vent filters from your stove vent for 8 hours and rinse. Theyll be like new without the price tag. From a Mom of 7 and professional housekeeper and cna. I say that bc everything I mentioned using is safe for asthma, children, pets, etc. I have tons of other tricks for cleaning tons of other stuff but thought I'd mention a few even easier things u can do related to your video. Also, for smells in furniture or clothes u can use vinegar. For dresser put a bowl of it n each drawer or u can use vodka. Then let it sit a few days. U can dampen a cloth and wipe it down as well afterward. It absorbs smells. I also redo furniture so that's a little trick for getting musty smells out. Like if u forget a load of washed wet clothes n washer for a few days...wash again with a couple cups of vinegar and your reg detergent. U should also be cleaning your washing machine at least every 3 months by putting on a cycle to clean but just put baking soda and vinegar in alone. .dont do this daily. It can eat your metal if used by itself daily. Love your videos! When will u do another with lone wolf? Loved that!

    Instead of using alcohol, since it can be expensive. I find a basin full of 50% hot water 50% vinegar will take of almost and stuck on mess and makes glasses and almost anything shine.

    Nooo..I was redecorating my lounge, and am late to the party.. Bah!!
    Edit : I grew up in the 60's and 70's, living in places like Portugal and Germany, so baskets and beautiful pottery, macrame and beads, layered carpets and lots of pillows were all the norm..and I never grew out of that style, so much so that I was always thought of as a hippy! It's wonderful that all of it is back and everyone thinks I'm right on trend!! 😁 😁 😁
    Oh, wow, the lamp is gorgeous! I made a pendant lamp out of one those seagrass baskets that you can use as a tote, with a edison bulb, and it turned out stunning!

    Hey Macenna! That gorrilla glue epoxy works a lot better if you squeeze the product out onto another surface, like a pallette or scrap of cardboard, and mix it really well with a stick. Do that for about 30 seconds and then apply it with a toothpick or I use an old knitting needles, and then clamp the two pieces together. Then it should bond together more securely than the hot glue! Best of luck!

    I always bathe thrift baskets . I use Dawn dishwash liquid. You could add alcohol and let them soak in the sink for 5 min. The water comes out black. They stay their shape because it’s only once. You can use the sprayer gently if your afraid of the bath. You’ll be glad you did

    My grandpa has had a vintage resell shop for 60+ years and he ALWAYS leaves things in his car at the very least overnight, and then another day on the covered porch before taking them to his shop. He's really proud of the fact he has never gotten bugs or brought bugs anywhere! They will die in the heat or the low temps of the car. It is like an oven or refrigerator, and the off chance something lives to make it to the covered porch it wanders off or gets eaten by the birds. At the very least things need to be left out overnight before you bring them into your place.

    I often wash baskets in soapy water, most of them can take it as long as you can dry them fairly fast. In the summer I just set them in the sun and in colder months I set them on top of a floor register. As long as they are constructed well it's a great way to clean them.

    The dessert glasses you found were premiums (get them free with minimum purchase) either at Shamrock stations or local grocery stores. Each week was a different piece, because I recall getting the goblets that went with those dessert glasses and there may have been iced tea glasses as well. Early 70s when I was a young bride in Texas. P.S. I love the Hill Country!

    I have my own little tip, on my first lap around the salvage yard or local thrift I take my camera phone and snap a picture of anything I might buy. After the quick overview I look at my pictures. It’s easy to forget a major treasure. I shop at a architectural warehouse and that’s huge so I also snap the aisle and the object.

    I keep an old toothbrush specifically for when I thrift something that has decades worth of dust in the nooks and crannies. If you try to wash something like that without getting the dust off first you often end up with this nasty dust paste when it gets wet so I'll dry brush it to get the bulk of the dust off first before any water goes near. Dry brushing is also good for baskets.

    Nice tips MaCenna! Ive been thrifting for many years now, after a while you get the hang of it, you use your creativity muscles! It's good to go regularly. My mom comes with me sometimes but she always say she never finds things... Well, I don't always find either! But I'd say 95% of my home is thrifted. Also, I like how professional your DIYs look at the end, not like most TH-camrs with their botched ones.

    I thrift pillows but only if I can unzip the pillow cover, because I can then wash the pillow cover or take it to the dry cleaners. I throw out the pillow insert and sometimes buy a new down pillow insert (which are not very expensive) if the cover doesn’t fit an existing pillow (it usually does). Essentially I’m buying the pillow for its cover.
