    The straight story is a very moving film a wild departure from what lynch usually does

      Debatable. The Elephant Man was also very moving and immediate.

      The first season of Twin Peaks had some intentionally cheesy moments and an even more folksy vibe. I don’t think straight Story is that radically different, in fact it’s way more serious and has less wacky humor

    RE: Fight Club
    I see two moviegoers. One had an expectation for where they wanted the film to go and were disappointed that it went its own way. The other was willing to let the film lead them somewhere and enjoyed the experience. Fight Club isn't for everyone but it's an amazingly well-made film that is engrossing and deep in the ideas it trots across the screen.

    Is Fight Club a timeless Masterpiece, or just a masterpiece for a generation? Listening to Ebert had me thinking. I didn't think he'd like the violence. When I first watched it I thought it was gonna be a Van Damme Blood Sport type movie. Thought I was unhappy that it wasn't at the time, now Fight club is one of my all time favs. Every scene has so many creative ideas and quotable lines.

    Not counting recommending Eraserhead on an old Cult Classics special, The Straight Story marked the first David Lynch movie Roger Ebert gave a positive review for after having what can charitably be described as a difficult relationship with Lynch's work.
    BTF not pro or anti either Lynch or Ebert. Just observing.

    The first rule of Fight Club is that you don't talk about Fight Club

  • @heilzorak64
    @heilzorak64 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fight Club wasn't supposed to be anti-violence, it's an ironic take on false macho gurus with vague philosophies who lead men into being target practice for the government industrial complex (an MK Ultra movie about taking advantage of tired, weak men), so Roger's remarks on the movie seem rather dishonest or just stupid and misreading the film. It's virtually impossible for a movie to pull off an anti-violence stance unless it gives attention to the sensitivities and impacts of violence as a choice or impulsive decision (because violence is a choice, whether for defensive, heinous, or other motives); otherwise, it's just embarrassing moralism made by fake Christians, Atheist Nihilist hypocrites, fake humanists, fake politicians.

    I just watched Fight Club for probably the 3rd time. I agree with Roger. While the acting of Brad Pitt and Edward Norton is great, once you know the twist of this movie, this film has little rewatch value

    • @TheJacklikesvideos
      @TheJacklikesvideos หลายเดือนก่อน

      the rewatch is even better. the twist reframes all of the interpersonal relationships and all the conversations take on different subtexts.

    Huh. I thought she'd condemn the film (being a wonk from ZDTV particularly). 1999 women were a lot better than today looks like. Of course you'd have to mention the book at some point - but neither did. The movie deviates (here and there) from the book - but not too much.

    we all know how popular Fight Club is, see what Roger says here just sort of makes me curious. if Gene and Roger could be here today if they could be like 20 or 30 year old critics today i wonder how their opinions would change on all these films they blasted through the 80s and 90s for being too violent or gory or whatever. and i mean even thought they were both VERY liberal and progressive for the time they are also Boomers. and as we all know there is nobody todays progressive liberal youth hate more than boomers. because it is impossible to be progressive enough to keep up with the changing views of progressives.

    • @MovieMaker2100

      Ebert was considerably progressive as a boomer but he also came out as anti abortion in his last days.
