    Very helpful video! I realized my main mistake seems to be reducing approach speed to "donut" after the final turn towards the carrier only. I thought it would be safer to have some extra knots during the final turn but either I required a much longer final approach leg or it was a bit stressful to reduce overspeed (30-50 knots) and stabilize.
    Regarding DLC: I recently went from Saitek X-45 (which I really liked) to TM Warthog HOTAS + rudders. On the Saitek I had mapped DLC to a rotary know on the throttle. Now with the TM I use the thumb stick on the stick. The disadvantage is that the DLC spoilers now have three states only: half open, fully closed, or fully open. I found it way easier to hit the three wire with the Saitek, where I could open / close the spoilers gradually. I wish the TM would have one or two rotaries. Maybe it even has already.... every now and then I still find some extra knobs and switches.

    Just learning the F14 cap so watching your tutorials but I’ve realised something I haven’t noticed when I watch your other vids or fly with you. You shouldn’t use the throttle for speed & the stick for height. It’s actually the other way round. The throttle controls your pitch & height & the stick controls your speed. It’s counter intuitive I know but it’s what you’re taught when you learn to fly. So if the VV is below the deck you don’t pull the nose up. You throttle up slightly & that does it for you. Same with the speed. If your slow then you drop the nose using the stick.

    • @mrsayang

      May I ask what you are flying in real and where you learned that? I am Airline Pilot with Lufthansa, flying B-747. I did my Pilots Training in Lufthansa Pilot School in Bremen Germany and most of the real flying lessons we got in the Airline Training Center in Goodyear Arizona near Phoenix. ALL we were taught is exactly the opposite of what you are stating.
      Correct procedure of flying a Jet engine Aircraft during an approach is…...Pitch controls Altitude and Vertical Speed and Throttle controls Speed. If you come to an Airline doing it the way you say, they would fire you.
      I know that many VFR private pilots getting training for a PPL in a Cessna are trained the way you say. You COULD fly a Cessna by controlling Speed with pitch and rate of descent with throttle, but even that does not make any sense.
      But latest coming to a jet engine aircraft that is a total NoGo.
      Flying the F-14 during a carrier approach is a totally different thing than flying it to an airfield runway and of course different than any other civilian jet. The carrier approach needs a high angle of attack, uses speedbrakes down all the time ( a NoGo for normal jets of course ) and uses DLC to correct the flight path to stay on the perfect glideslope ( which is also totally different compaerd with a civilian jet ). Eventhough the specific procedures flying an F-14 in a carrier traffic pattern are different, the general rules of pitch and power flying with a jet, which I wrote above are still correct.

    • @Madeyes6
      @Madeyes6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mrsayang hi mate. Well you learn something new everyday. My information is based on my PPL lessons on a Cessna. I didn’t realise it was different for a jet. Is it the same for a small fighter as it is for a wide bodied jet do you know?

    • @Madeyes6
      @Madeyes6 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrsayang I will say though that in DCS i fly this way. I use the throttles to control the pitch during landing, gently adjusting them to keep the VV on the threshold or the carrier deck.

    • @nmode7420
      @nmode7420 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Madeyes6 you are correct. Pitch to control speed, power to control rate of descent.
      The reason commercial airliner pilots might disagree with this, is because they are glorified button pushers, and are slaves to using an ILS... With ILS it was easier to just use autopilot or flight director to rely on pitch, especially since early systems had no autothrottle. That method has just stuck around.
      It's definitely better to continue using pitch for speed, as this method results in a constant angle of attack during landing.

      @@mrsayang he is talking about the "region of reverse command". When at low speeds with high drag or alpha, the controls are reversed. Pitching the nose up slows you, and down speeds you, applying power climbs, and cutting power decends.
      Again, this reversed command situation is only during low speed and high drag. It's also known as "being behind the power curve" or at "the back of the power curve". In all other cases, pitching up climbs, and pitching down descends, power up adds speed, power down removes speed - but if you are behind the power curve these are all reversed and becomes a situation where you must actually fight what comes intuitively.
      This problem of reverse command is completely defeated however with any auto-throttling system engaged. In which case you will use your stick inputs to change lift or sinkrate.
      Here is an explaination:

    Much better! Couple notes I usually do. When taking off from the bow (cats 1,2) I pull right 20 degrees then come back onto BRC, and stay at 500 ft for 7 NM from the boat, before turning to WP heading and climbing. If from waist cats 3,4), I pull left 20 degrees. Basically the maneuver just gets you out of the path of the boat behind you if you should have to ditch.
    During takeoff and landing I usually have TACAN on my VDI and HSI, and if there is ILS set up, I will usually put that on for landing. TACAN on HSI helps me figure out how far away 7 NM is before I am clear of the traffic pattern.

      It's also because of the limits of the DCS engine. IRL there would never be a crosswind during standard flight operations because the carrier needs to have that wind blowing from bow to stern to help aircraft maintain decent lift. In DCS the systems just kinda work so there's no need to model the carrier turning to the wind.

      From all the sources i have seen the hud is not a horizon reference and the velocity vector is extremely inaccurate . Use your instruments (aoa indexer, vsi, adi, asi) And yes a case 1 landing can be performed with hud off and some pilots even preferred it (or with the brightness way down).
