I enjoy traveling with you and visiting Garage Mahal from my porch here in Georgia, over my morning coffee. That was really enjoyable to watch, as you were showing the shop I enjoyed seeing the Casting Patterns on the wall and hanging around the area. Most people today don't understand in-house fabrication because so much is outsourced. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.
Most of those patterns are actually out of the smelter at McGill. Large gears and all sorts of things like that that they used up there. But some of them are locomotive patterns.
Thank you for the video, my wife and I visited the NNVRR in the spring of 2014 on our way to a hiking trip in Utah. What I loved about it was that it was so real and the freedom to just wander around and look. Our stay in Ely was planned though to explore my wife’s family roots. Her grandfather was employed as one of the operators of the power plant at the mill in McGill NV. Both her father and her aunt rode the railroad to High School in Ely from McGill before their father moved on to join the Burbank Water and Power Co in California. Excited to hear that they received funding to reopen the line to McGill. We had a great time exploring McGill, visiting the Rexall Drugstore Museum and the municipal swimming pond where her father was lifeguard.
And I guess they have some of the surviving mill buildings? Or other structures? Need to find out more but the grant seems to include restoring several buildings in McGill
Unfortunately nothing is left of the Mill, they blew up the smokestack in 1993 after clearing the rest first. There is a utube of the explosion taken from the Park where my father in law was a lifeguard.

Good video Dale. I enjoyed the soundtrack too. I remember as a kid watching the electric locomotive bring the ore down from the mine. I also watched that little switcher move around. I was stuck in the car while my Dad was selling them stuff at McGill Smelter. He also went up to the mine and sitting in the car at the mine you saw nothing. After his work, we swam in the municipal pool in Ely and sometimes ate at the Hotel Nevada. That's where I saw Wayne Newton singing with his brother at the bar stage. As a kid, you had to look Through the slot machines to see him.
The Nevada hotel has a great history. Back before the freeway is this was one of the major ways to get out of LA. They’ve got stars in the sidewalk out in front of the hotel showing all the different celebrities who either stayed there or played there. It’s an amazing collection of people.
