    That design started as a Pierce-Arrow design. Our local fire brigade had a 1946 Bickle-Seagrave and eventually the original engine was replaced by a 440 Chrysler V-8. My father who was a locomotive foreman on the CNR tried to get them to use a Diesel.

      Ours got replaced by a big block poly~318 Chrysler with a tall tall homebuilt downdraft 4 barrel carb. Ran circles around the old v12

      @michaelbenardo5695 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Colt-tf6xf The 318 is not a big block. The position of the valve covers made it seem wide, but it is a small-block.

      @@michaelbenardo5695 you could be correct, fr watching Uncle Tony's Garage, and a few other Mopar sights I got the impression that the original 318 poly was a big or different block than the venerable one, 273/340 one we're familiar with. As mentioned, you could be right, but in the end game we apparently both like Chrysler.

      @@michaelbenardo5695 just caught a little article about a 1959 Dodge that had a 325 in it, not a Dodge Hemi which was an offering, but a precursor to the 413 apparently, Chrysler had a lot of motors. Have a good day.

      @@Colt-tf6xf It was part of the "B" series engine. It ran from 325 to low-block 383. The "RB" series ran from high-block 383 to 440 cubes and was of the same basic design. Great engines.

    Amazing. I’ve seen only one of these engines. It was in a very old fire truck back in the early 90’s at my high school homecoming game.

    It's a fire engine/truck motor. I was a mechanic for a fire department that had two of these...a pumper and a ladder truck. The truck was circa 1936 and the engine 1946. They were very dependable, but this rookie had a real learning experience in synchronizing the two ignition systems. It doesn't sound difficult until you loosen the distributors and get started. Those engines were built before fire radios were in common use, and you had to install shielded (braided) spark plug wires, coils and caps to both distributors. It would have been simple if the shielded systems fit properly.

      Did it stop the ignition noise? I imagine that baby would really mess with a CB.

    • @cousinfester4621
      @cousinfester4621 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Suppressor wires and resistor plugs would have done the trick on the distributor side. You wouldn't want to use these on the magneto side, though. With magnetos you'd be stuck trying to shield those wires and plugs.

  • @edwarddavis6679

    I wouldn't think a V12 would be so balanced that is probably one of the cleanest running engines I've seen and heard and I'm 60 years old thumbs up to you guys excellent job

    • @Tipo874
      @Tipo874 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A V12 is basically two straight 6's, which is inherently perfectly balanced, so it too will be perfectly balanced.

  • @odb_roc_hound4186
    @odb_roc_hound4186 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Most fire truck engines of that time had twin ignition for reliability, one was a distributor for easy starting, the second was a magneto which was self powered, and allowed for hand cranking, generators and batteries were not the most reliable, during a fire you didn’t want a failure to shut down the engine. The distributor and magneto were not usually used together.

    • @brian6872
      @brian6872  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not quite right. Up to the late 20's early 30's Magneto/Distributor as standard on most custom fire engines in the early mid 30's the larger manufactures had triple ignition, double bank magneto and distributor later in the 40-60's dual ignition was 2 distributors like this engine which was sold to NWFD in 1966 to replace their older model Seagrave V12.The engines were always run on both systems as the engines ran much smoother. The early Seagrave V12 462 cu in was a dual ignition Peirce Arrow engine which Seagrave bought the tooling in mid 1930's after PA went bankrupt, this engine is a 531 cu in which is just an enlarged version of the old 462 with much heaver heads for a much increased compression ratio for more Horse Power 185/190 HP in the older engines upped to 251 HP in this engine.
