Thanks for the interesting video. I was up in Dutch Harbor in 1960 and it was deserted. There was an old Naval installation there that was abandoned and we ran amok while there. The Mountain in the last shot I climbed all the way to the top and discovered old gun emplacements and lots of tunnels dug into that mountain. Oh yes that airport all it had as I remember was a wind sock for the once in a great while pilot to gage wind direction. Thanks again-Jon
Was in Akutan Alaska in 1990 I was aboard f/v Melissa rae we stopped at the dock for supplies heading out for a 24 hour halibut opening,we finished baiting some hooks and hit the bar there and got hammered being from phoenix az and then being in a bar in Akutan Alaska getting hammered was an adventure I will never forget and we landed up nailing a shitload of halibut I never worked so hard in my life !! was awesome !!
Men Thank you so much for sharing with us. You take me back to where I started working there at 2007 until 2009. I haven't seen any video since that day I left so thank you so much for that.😍😍😍😍😂😂😂😂
I took the same plane to the same destination, Akutan. I enjoyed the flight an the scenery so much. It was a mind blowing experience esp. being from the tropical island of the South Pacific. AND I left the same way on the boat. The Pastor and his wife that you met at the galley retired 2011, they were amazing people. Btw Matt, you cheated when you were putting your safety red suit on, I didn't see you fasten the velcro by the ankles first. Lol! This was a cool footage, thanks for sharing.
Matt, thanks for sharing the vid. I was there in January of '91 on the Shenk Seafoods boat, M/V Scout hauling around a processing barge. What memories you've stirred. We were anchored off in the corner of the bay there in "Akutrazz" with the processor tied up along side a Korean or Jap freighter loadin' cod in the roe. I remember a trip we made to Dutch to pick up some workers/inmates and we got weathered in after attempting to make it back to Akutrazz in 9 meter seas. Damn, I thought the wx guy said 6-9 feeters. A ride to remember. We turned around not to far out but I honestly thought the old girl was about to roll on over. I don't remember the skippers name but Bill Hoeller was the mate. Good fellas indeed. If I'd had to do it again, I'da flown but I was the Chief Engineer on the Scout at the time. I was subbin for the real chief who had wisely sat it out back in Bellingham..... What a beautiful world we live in. The voyage up there and around was indescribabley awesome. Thanks again.
Great video. I've made that trip many times, and miss the old Goose. They built a $75 million dollar airport but only missed the destination island of Akutan by 7 miles. Gotta love Alaska. So now you get to ride in whatever they decide is the cheapest way to get to Akutan, helicopter is latest, since there is also NO dock at the island where the airport is.... Airport to nowhere.
that ship you rode over on i believe it was indeed the eastern wind! i updated and re wired her entire freezer cargo hold during the winter of 08/09. brings back memories!
Seaplanes have "pontoons". They use them to float on water. Flying boats, like the Goose, have "floats", which only keep the wings out of the water. Just letting you know, in case you end up trying to impress some chick at the bar who turns out to know the difference. It has happened before, at least once.
I was thinking of working there and so, I do my homework. Yes, it's beautiful there. They say the plant is at Dutch Harbor but I was not sure if it is a Trident related plant or not. So I googled it and noticed the landing strip. It's funny because in your video it looks exactly as it does on Google Earth. So I figure, you must be able to land and or take off from either side (since there would only be one plane at a time anyways. Love the Goose too. Very useful plane in Alaska I presume!
I flew on the same airplane except from Akutan to Dutch Harbor. I quit on F/V Alpine Cove. It was a real shitty fishing boat. It was hilarious after they dropped me off on that shithole island, the lame skipper fell asleep and landed on the rocks. lmao.
I have an offer from trident to work at their akutan plant as an electrician. anyone ever done this before? is it really worth it? 65k yearly but I have to bring tools, towels, and work 7days weekly...
Is room/board provided? Have you ever lived/worked in remote Alaska before? may be worth it experience wise, but 65k is low for some people to make that kind of sacrifice of being far from town and fast internet.
Room/board/laundry being included is the equivalent of at least 20g per year in these places. Rent is ridiculous and utilities are worse, so consider that. I'm assuming this is some sort of long-term seasonal gig? I'd do it, but I also just took a 10 month job in Dutch so I'm on the mentally unstable side :P
N22932! That aircraft flew for Catalina Airlines in the late 70s. It crashed and was salvaged in 1979. How cool that it’s still flying!

Thanks for the video. I was there between 2001 and 2003. Brings back some memories of being on Akutan, the Goose and the boat trip.

Always wanted to see what Akutan looks like. Your video was awesome and look forward to visiting this Summer.
Thanks for sharing this Matt.

Man that engine really kicks on the rollout! Excellent video!

Thanks for sharing this Matt. Some great shots, beautiful scenery not to mention the Goose.

I LOVE ME SOME GOOSE!!! My favorite plane in the world, I might add.
That, my friend is amazing!!!

Wonderful Alelutian Islands (Alaska)!
I like Alelutians - they is like Lofoten (Islands) (Norway)...

Was there in August 2012 and had a local flight under the clouds! Fantastic experience but all finished shortly after.
beautiful... i sooo want to live there
Reminds me of the times I flew on the Reeve Goose from Cold Bay to King Cove and Nelson Lagoon.
I love this plane, thanks for sharing bro, you dont see this kind of aircraft in Mexico. Hope someday i could fly a multi engine Radial like that one.
Aww Bee I miss her so much , nice video but hey the food in the galley is pretty terrible
been there 2014
That's awesome!
Nice video. Perhaps you can make another one with a flight into the Akutan airport on Akun, then the helicopter?
Interessante! Lugares muito interessantes!
Matt, interesting, as well as scenic, trip. Am I hearing you say ACK-uh-tan, or ACK-you-tan?
I believe Mayor Joe says it ACK-oo-tahn
So, they have Sri Racha at the Trident galley, but not Heinz ketchup?! :P
Weird the wind isn’t howling
I was planning to work at trident next year january.. is it good to work there?
I flew on the same airplane except from Akutan to Dutch Harbor. I quit on F/V Alpine Cove. It was a real shitty fishing boat. It was hilarious after they dropped me off on that shithole island, the lame skipper fell asleep and landed on the rocks. lmao.
is there a wifi connection in trident seafood plant?
Nope, I believe that, there is wifi plan sold by Alaskan Company
So what happens when your igloo melts in the summer? Haha
Why were you out there? Work or touring?
Do you work for Trident? Im considering doing an internship there. Im from CA
Nope, it is a great company though.
And speeding it up kind of ruins it for those who were interested in the aircraft. If I wanted to listen to RC planes, I would.
did you have to speed it up?
Would have liked to have seen the takeoff in normal time..
Me too. Disappointed by this.

Room and board and laundry is provided, and it is 7 days 12 hrs a day.

looks like a cold and dreadful place..
Totally ruined it by speeding it up.
are there good strip clubs in akutan??
There sure is. A woman behind every tree.......
way under paid
Cool area aside the sound of you chewing is the most annoying thing ever! What is wrong with you
