OMG I'm crying... I had this 3rd Anniversary Special on beta video tape, and I wore that thing out watching it. Too funny!! Vince McMahon and Bob Costas were on that anniversary show, too.
blacktopaz8 what alot of people dont know is that dave used to drink alot. So when he was making us laugh our asses off in the 80s & 90s by just being strange & hilarious he was a little hammered. After the heart attack & maybe a few years before he stopped & thats when he changed. But he will always be the king of late nite to me.
Thanks for putting this up! My brother video taped this Anniversary Special when it first aired and we used to watch it on the beta over and over. This was pretty much our favorite segment. Ah, the memories!
Remember when you were a kid & you & your friends would make prank calls? Now imagine that friend has his own TV show. And it's not just prank calls, it's going out and pranking the public. And you're in on the joke. That was Letterman in the 80s.
I was a high school senior on November 29, 1989 in rural eastern North Carolina. I wouldn't become elgible to vote for presidential until the next election in 1992. But, did you know: 44th Vice President Senator JAMES Danforth "Dan" Quayle (b. 1947) shares a FEBRUARY 4th birthday with comedian David Brenner (b. 1936), whose "Hurricane Motherhumper" in an HBO special last decade proves he's still got it. I think it's the special where Brenner got married live, on stage at the end
How's this for classic David Letterman: The Top 10 list for November 29, 1988 was: "Top 10 Fears of Snuggle the Fabric Softener Bear". At #6: " Excess softener will leave him unable to perform as a male" At #3: "Something might happen to George Bush". Of course, at the time INDIANA Senator JAMES Danforth "Dan" Quayle was Vice-President-elect against howls from political opponents that he was too inexperienced to be "a heartbeat away" form the presidency. Quayle became 44th VP on Jan. 20, 1989
Inspired Tom Green which revolutionized comedy and birthed a whole generation of MTV then TH-cam pranksters. Wonder who influenced letterman to do these.
Top ten reasons Robin Givens gave for leaving Mike Tyson: #8: Got inexplicably sulky after she called him a maniac on national television. #3: Tired of watching the Cosby Show and having him as "which one are you?"
Classic Dave!! He actually put us on the map with this skit - we're going to miss you!
Just Shades What do you sell?
I watched every one of these back then and could not stop laughing.
Don't go, Dave. Don't go.
Antonio Gramsci so funny!
Those were the days. I watched every night back then and remember some of those bits.

Im not too sure about that.
Jeff Hunter Are you sure Dave stopped drinking? I just saw him downing shots of vodka with Bill Murray.
JMMT7022801 WATER!
Jeff Hunter That's right. He has said he didn't like being the stupid one drinking, when others had quit.

For some reason the guy saying "ladies get construction jobs" makes me laugh every damn time. That and the tiny lady dancing "New York New York."
Letterman was GREAT during the 80's! He was much more fearless with the things he said, or atleast it seemed.
Googled it, Just Shades is still going strong!
Letterman needs to be more like his old self.
