Releasing the original game in HD would've been the best and most logical choice considering how this remake actually turned out .
Yeah, the original wasn't a masterpiece, but i liked it. (The comic it was based on is also really, really good imho).
All they had to do for a decent remake was to spruce the graphics up a bit while keeping the original style and maybe nerfing the stealth sections and tweaking the save system.
But they somehow managed to botch it apparently.
Don't need HD, the original's textures are really plain, so stretching them from 800x600 to 1920x1080 doesn't negatively affect the appearance, does make the pre-rendered cutscenes look dodgy, but the ingame cutscenes are still good.
All they had to do was copy and paste, update graphics and shading, then maybe put in two or three new mechanics for this gen and it would have been a huge hit.
Making it a 16-bit game would've been more logical than this.
I'm kidding, kinda. Lol
I have a feeling this game is going to end up on a Wha Happun
This kind of game is what Wha Happun was made for
Yus!
I actually kinda hope so cause I want to know. I need to know. Im so curious
Oh yes I'm so expecting this too. It's too bad...because I loved the original. Was hoping maybe this would lead to a sequel finally. 🤣🤣
@@Burning_Typhoon Whoa. That's harsh, man. But then again, if you didn't play the original (which was kinda janky in its own right but great for the era), there's probably not much to see/experience there... comparatively emptier than HL1 (taking the age into account), this likely is one of the worst remakes possible, even worse than WC3...
The first Bourne Identity novel was published in 1980
The first XIII graphic novel was published in 1984
Well, that clears something that had been low-key bothering me for a decade or so.
Thanks for the info.
The writer admits he read The Bourne Identity four times in the first month of owning the book.
I never even realised the Bourne series was that old.
The premise here does scream 'Bourne rip-off,' though I don't recall Ludlum being as audacious as having someone shoot off handcuffs through an air duct from across the room.
A shame this game is such a cel-out.
boo
BOOO GET OFF THE STAGE
”Why are you booing me? I’m right!”
Bad puns are how eye roll.
Don't pay attn to the haters.
That was Ex-cel-ent.
I haven't heard sound design this quality since The Quiet Man.
atleast the soundtrack is still good
They used the original games music and voice acting I think.
You will FEEL like you sustained traumatic brain injury!
You can get the original on Steam for like $6 and there's a fan patch that puts it near fully to modern remaster standards so boom go do that for those burnt by this
Hell, playing the original on Steam with the crappy full screen resolution without the patch is still a great experience compared to this awful remake.
wait, whats the patch called?
@@hystericallover5989 just Google xiii fan patch
The original doesn’t even have controller support on steam
@@SethKasso idk why you’d want to play it with a controller in the first place
The instant rigor mortis on the ragdoll is great.
It's so funny. Just last week I was thinking about the original. Then this video pops up and tells me it was remade, and done horribly? What are the odds. I guess it was even more strange that the developers blame the poor results on the pandemic.
I think we need a Wha Happened to know the truth.
It's interesting they blame the pandemic when the game was in development way before that, and we've seen tons of great games released in the same time.
If microid is the publisher, then absolutly.
I played this on my ps4........it was an technical mess.
I uh hope COVID didn't change the art style. Unless that's one of the new symptoms.
@Code Turtle Underrated quip
Just look:

She looks like a fortnite character ngl
Original XIII can be updated to modern resolutions by changing FOV in one file, and setting the resolution in another file. Whats great is the original simple textures upscale to 1920x1080 easily. I've heard people can run it to 4k, also a mod or two exists for online play of the classic. While we're waiting on an update for that in the remake.
Jobber Security Guard no-selling the chair shot and disrespecting the business
It's like those flippy shit indie guys who can't sell a 640 and just want to do spanish fly's all day
"I've heard things... I've heard things" saying in Richard Divizio's Quan Chi voice 😂 those MKM outtakes are pure gold
Imagine Wind Waker HD but instead they did it without the cell-shading.
“I need a key” sounds like a fake name 5:15 -Anita Key
I feel like they brought my puppy back to life and kicked him. This game was a small part of my life but it was noteworthy.
Wah happun
This has "Wha Happun" written all over it.
God, I am so bitter about this remake and how it turned out to be absolute shit.
As someone who loved the original (I had the XBOX version), I am just bitter about this.
Would you ever play Area 51 for the original Xbox? It was a quasi sci fi/horror FPS that also had David Duchovny and Marilyn Manson voiced the Grey leader. I remember it being ok. Got it at a blockbuster bargain bin so it's been a while. Not sure if it holds up
The Bourne Identity was released before the first issue of the XIII comic by several years.
Also you should do an impressions video of the original game to show where this remake messed up so badly.
I bought the original the day of the remake's release, its a better game in almost all respects. It even has online multiplayer if you install the community mod. Meanwhile the remake only offers local splitscreen, 3 characters, 2 modes, 3 maps
There’s literally no cel shading or art style. It looks like they slapped black lines over a FPS with realistic textures and lighting.
Imagine remaking the game that started the trend of cel-shading to emulate comics, lauded and renowned for its distinct visual look, and deciding to piss on it with a remake that is almost like asset flips at times.
oh god, the guns sounds like they came out of Ride to Hell.
I like how the developers saw fortnite and were like "lets just make it look like that"
Anyone got the classic version? I got it and it's pretty cool.
There was a sale on Steam recently. And I got for like just two dollars. A real steal of a price compared to what they're making you pay for this garbage remake.
@@MisterUnknown707 i know right. When i saw the remake version i was like "Oh thank goodness i did not pre-order or bought it on the shelf" from what i seen i'm glad i did not buy the remake.
@@JULR0W That's awesome to hear friend. Hope fully someday a whole lot of peoples will fill up the online multiplayer so we call all enjoy the online match.
XIII came first but it was inspired (quite heavily may I say) by the first Jason Bourne TV film from 1988 (which is adapted from a novel but iirc the author took it from the TV film.
It's sad for such a great comic series as XIII.
00:00 "Oh cool! A remake of XIII!"
00:46 "Why?"
Bourne Identity was written in 1980. He has amnesia in the book also (obviously).
This game was on that Ubi Soft Trifecta. This game came out when Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Beyond Good and Evil came out. I was lucky enough to get a free copy for XIII on my Gamecube and loved it. The game did not sell and if you were lucky, you could find it brand new for 14.99 or less. I preordered it for PS2 because it also came with an amazing cd soundtrack. R.I.P. Adam West(he was an actor in a movie named, ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE)
I'm so disappointed by this remake and I didn't even have any expectations about it
thats what happens when you allow corporations to spy on you. dont search pokemon cards or they will throw out a shitty for-profit pay to win pokemon cards scheme and will cripple the money out of you, out of your soul as by product waste and as main service, Use you, profit directly and indirectly out of every pore in your skin
Cripes, the way they go down after you hit them with a chair. They should have just tossed in a Simpsons-style "Well, down I go," with each one.
The best thing about this game coming out was the original XIII was on offer for literally £2. Bought that instead and had the superior experience! :)
That officer is immune to chair, it runs in his family.
Technically speaking the Bourne Novels came first (1980 in the US) then the XIII comics (1984, and in French only at the time) its possible XIII had some influence, from Bourne, But conspiracies such as JFKs assassination l, or KKK, or illuminati for example, seem to be the main theme in XIII
"Back and to the left" 17:35 snuck in an obligatory Bill Hicks reference
For your next Wha Happun Video, do The Sopranos: Road to Respect on PS2, you should watch Dunkey’s video about it, it’s really funny!
WAIT...WAIT....WAIT.... this is a REMAKE!?!?!?!?! lmfao
@@JULR0W It's the only thing it could be. They gave this to the D team and said go nuts. Looks like a dreamcast game and plays like one lol
This is so heartbreaking. XIII was one of the first games I got with my own money.
As per the scene with JFK: "Nothing bad uh happens to the Kennedys!"
The "cell-shading" in this game reminds me of Guise of the Wolf if anyone remembers that classic Totalbiscuit stream
Brighton Beach is in the Brooklyn area, so it checks out.
When I first saw that this was announced, I thought that when this remake would come out, it'd somewhat successful and a sequel would then come out. But nah, that scenario is now thrown completely out the window. All I ask now is how and why the hell did they get this IP?
Because Microids paid for it
Feels like this game was made in Unity, like a cheap Hentai game
A little pfs drop? the dying animation look like a ray harryhausen claymation production, jeez!
My brother and I would play the original SO MUCH as kids so we were really looking forward to this lol rip
Sucks man that game kicked so much ass
Original was on sale last week on steam, seemed to have a big spike in owners. Upscaling the resolution to modern monitors is pretty easy, so why not try that.
@@Eyclonus yeah I saw that, definitely something i'll look into, its not on sale anymore but I'd rather pay full price for that instead of this lol
Loved the original
Glad I didn't pick this up, especially considering the cost
This is a great reason on why not every remake should never be made at all.The original is a classic. This version has alot of problems.
A couple of things i noted: the scripted events (cutscenes, npc moving, the death animations) take a time,to load and that looks weird, the bullets dont feel right, let alone the weapons. The presentation is very much improved since the og, the new transitions are cool but very unpolished... Maybe another 6 months of ddvelonpent would have helped
I am actually really enjoying the remake despite all the jank. It's a fun romp. I personally am not too bothered by the graphics change. It works and, to me, is in the spirit of the original game's look. Since you mentioned some wanting some Bond remakes (and I agree), that got me thinking of how I would love a sequel to Blood Stone.
It's not "in the spirit" at all: images.pushsquare.com/42172f9b6dfed/xiii-ps4.900x.jpg
@@MattMcMuscles respectfully disagree. Being "in the spirit" does not mean it has to be exactly the same (an argument can be made that it is supposed to be since this is a remake). When I see this game, I can still tell it is supposed to look like a comic. Perhaps our ideas of being "in the spirit" are a bit different. I see this game and I can still see the original that I played years ago.
It's weird, it's like some assets have slight cell shading, and some don't. Like around the 17:30 mark they all look just slightly cell shaded. Also I enjoyed picking up the ashtray and holding it with intent, then when you throw it you frisbee it in an upward arc like you're playing a carnival hoop game.
16:24 - "Nyeh, what's up, Doc?"
😂
😂😂
Love the intro music everytime i hear it.
I always felt the original XIII from 2003 was wonderful. This wasn't what I was expecting.
14:46 AIM AIM AIM
God, this looks like a fan mod
17:30 Every time I do it makes me laugh
That rooftop skybox looks better than the whole game
Look how they massacred my boy!
😂
Every time Matt McMuscles laughs, an angel gets its wings.
and a homeless gets him/herself a blankey
23:33 "Swing along the cable by moving W stick"
No one gonna mention how at 15:28 when he smacks the dudes with a chair he ends up on top of the wall light?
Back....and ti the left..BACK! and to the left! Hahaha
Brighton beach is in Brooklyn, NY
a masterpiece of a remake clearly
Yes there is a Brighton Beach in NY, its in Brooklyn. Also this game annoyed me when it transitioned to Financial District Midtown New York. That's 2 different locations. The financial district in Manhattan is located on the southern end of the city where the stock exchange is located. Midtown is where you would find your times square, madison square garden etc. Stupid rant I'm done lol.
There's a lot more to get annoyed about than minor things like that.
@@elliotjohnson9415 For you. This was my annoyance
They did a remake...??!
You need a twitch if you have the time for it this was awesome and i wanted a longer stream
I presume that developers are using stock Unreal 4 cell-shading (?) tool, instead of creating they own, like it was in the original.
The books about Jason Borne were written somewhere in 70s, and idk when XIII - the original comic book - was released.
Somebody has probably already pointed this out, but the original is available on Steam for a fiver.
Well, can’t wait to see this on Wha Happun
Oh wow.
There goes all the charm. :(
Wait you have never walked ashore before. I did that a lot when I got sent back in time as a charmander.
I first saw a video of this from Sophia Narwitz and she tore it a new one. Another presenter commented on the vast amount of bugs in this game. What can i tell you eh?
Brighton is in Brooklyn.
NOTHING BAD EVER HAPPENS TO THE KENNEDYS!
In what world does "Armour" look more like "Ar-more" than "Armor"?
Armour, which has a U in it, actually looks like how it sounds.
Cheers, from England.
This looks like it feels like a default Unity asset game
wow...didn't expect it to the THIS janky . wow
Fuuuuuuck I loved that game so much......
Played the original on a crt with component a year or so ago and it looks so much better because the cel shading holds up, and this looks janky and weird.
The game has been fixed a lot since release but the sound design only slightly
Red Faction 1 Matt.
Totally agree in the James Bond remasters, I was thinking that the other day and started replaying the gamecube games, shame that The World is not Enough is not that good on emulators.
5:50 oh my. The mouse input seemed terrible on the gun, but now the zero recoil on the AK, that's _absolutely_ not like the original (where your arms are made of papier mâché).
EDIT: Speaking of no impact, it's like the way NPCs freeze when you break a chair on them, it's like they faint without really getting hit...?
C stands for Combat
5:10 best moment
just watching him trying to play this piece of garbage makes me want to play the original instead and I never played Xlll before.
every year i look for it and boom google all seing eye gave me my wish with a ironic and evil twist. like they always do. Just be evil -google
I am the chair!!!!
Honestly, what to expect from a company whose logo is just the Beats by Dre logo upside down?
The Publisher is the bad guy here, not the Developer.
It´s still sad to see this. I played the Original almost 6 times.Good that i have the original PC Release still here by me.
I believe the remake would have been much better had Microids delayed it. The groundwork and potential is all there. It just wasn't ready for release.
17:30 EVERY TIME I LOOK IT MAKES ME LAUGH
This gets a solid REBREAK out of ten from me (Sorry but I couldn't resist)
This looks and sounds like postal 3. How'd they fuck up THIS BAD
Man another dissapointment in the year of 2020.
The original was great. Good multiplayer too. Also upload the original if you play it.
Glad my preorder got canceled
No...just..no. Waiting for a Number Xlll sequel for years, and we get a "remake" polished turd. But Thank you Matt for playing this had so much good memories for this game.
2020, man.
An upres of the original would've sufficed but this has a wholly unappealing visual re-design and looks pretty glitchy.
What a letdown. Better to just buy the original on Steam or GOG.
The Playmagic logo is just the Beats logo but mirrored and turned upside down. Surely that isn't legal?????
Hit me up if want the DL on Sim City (2013) and/or Tabula Rasa and Auto Assault
The framing is similar to the shooter movie, with mark whalberg
Shooter was a rip on the Bourne Identity, sans the amnesia.
God damn what game havent they remade in the last few years lol
Why did they totally throw out the comic style footstep onomotopoeias and comic panels?! That was one of the fun gameplay elements...
Who were the people who donked this up? Did they not play the original one?
