Maybe it's that there is death and danger associated with taking the action, as the ones that I recognized from your list all involved attacking or were just involved with something that took a character you(and hopefully the audience too) care about's friend's or family's/something else they love away from from them before our eyes. Really good video. I have only seen Demon Slayer from the anime you talked about but I have heard of some of the others so I can add them to my watch list. I know one of my story ideas has been done before sense I was watching the show that inspired me when I came up with it. Out of all my ideas it is the most thought out and completed but I do wonder if readers would make the connection to the show. And one of my ideas has the same power structure as Black Clover but it is set in a modern world. I will see what happens when I get around to actually making them. I don't plan to start them until I have finished college next year so I have time to work on the stories and plots.
Sounds awesome! Thank you for taking the time to watch and sharing your thoughts! Tbh I feel like you can't control how the audience reacts. People compare stuff all of the time. A lot of these really popular new shows like Jujutsu Kaisen get compared to series like Naruto too. It just comes with the territory ya know I wouldn't let that fear stop you! It sounds like you planned out a lot so best of luck developing this project!
Those are some great picks! Ayakashi Triangle has been on my radar for a while, I'm a huge fan of Black Cat and To Love Ru so I know I'll enjoy it haha. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!
Jujutsu kaisen and demon slayer took the dbz formula and changed it which is a great thing tbh one piece has done the same thing and look how successful it is... inspired by db manga they take a few key concepts from akira and made their own changes
That's a great point! Thank you for taking the time to add on to the discussion! For others looking to the comments for more information, could you maybe explain what the DBZ formula is that inspired these more recent series?
@@MonitorComics glad you asked, you see the cliche shonen protagonist story was revolutionised by akira, although at the time there was manga out there that had the same plotline, strong protagonist uses the power of will to overcome any obstacles, akira really used this and amplified it. For e.g. naruto, kishimoto idolised akira's page spread technique he used to tell a story at the start of the naruto manga kishimoto didn't know how to use panels and angling to tell a story. He asked akira for help, akira toriyama uses angling and proper panelling to telling a 1000 words his master roshi vs kid goku fight. During the 23rd tournament against master roshi (or jackie chun) the story is told from goku's perspective up until he fights master roshi in which toriyama uses angling of his drawings to really show the fight through master roshi's lens its a simple detail many overlook toriyama wasn't writing or drawing for goku to win, in that fight he made the audience see it through roshi's lens (pun intended) this was evident when goku turned into a great ape, now the audience is rooting for master roshi to beat goku (the main protagonist). Toriyama implemented what is being used today so casually to show progress of a character, something called the timeskip. Prior to this time skip, goku after losing to mercenary tao realises he cannot go far with just master roshi's training alone and akira uses korin's tower as a literal and figurative symbol to show the obstacle goku has to literally climb in order to save his friends father. If i remember correctly he was told he would become stronger if he could climb the tower in which he did rise to the occasion and this led to him meeting korin
@@MonitorComics its alot of stuff there but i'm just showing you the formulas nowadays manga artists have adopted, imma skip a bit forward to dragon ball z, kishimoto said he loved the way akira drew goku vs vegeta. At a visual standpoint we see goku standing on a rock at a lower level than vegeta showing that even though goku has gotten stronger he is still a bit weaker than vegeta who stands at a higher rock, this also shows that goku is literally the one standing between vegeta and the earth kishimoto used this to write, naruto vs sasuke in the first part and in shippuden when he first meets sasuke, sasuke stands on a ledge higher than naruto looking down on him after seeing him for the first time and naruto looking up at sasuke it shows their level of power at that point. Naruto as a character takes alot from goku, hidden power accessed through intense struggle, unknown parents who died before the child protagonist could meet them and an unshaking will to move beyond whatever obstacle is infront of them. They both exhibit a naive and childish personality seeing the world through an optimistic lens working towards a goal. They both meet a sensei that leaves them with a will. Master roshi tells goku to become stronger not for selfish reasons or competition but to test ones limit and to protect other, jiraiya taught naruto to never give up to be a "gutsy" ninja and push to reach towards your goal. Akira was one of the first manga writers to use tournament arcs to show progress in the main character's strength and resolve, many many many other manga utilised this and even made it better. Naruto's tournament arc is still one of the best arca of the series to date
@@MonitorComics the concept of powers ups as well (its alot really) dragon ball used ki, naruto used chi, hunter hunter used nen, bleach used spiritual pressure but one piece kept changing and adapting their power system, from devil fruits to haki. Remember luffy was basically a copy and paste goku the only thing oda didn't do was tournament arcs
I have this idea for a manga where the protagonist joins a villain group I'm still working on the plot but I got a plant for a Arc where the main character has to fight his parents
I had an idea for my manga, which is about young adults attending to a school for future assassins or hitmen (still considering which would fit best). One of the titles I made up is “Hitman High”! I hope to make this one of the best manga series and with your help with these videos, I feel more confident that I am on the right path! Thank you ❤
Thank you for this video. I'm not much of a mangaka, nor am I a writer, but I started DMing for my younger siblings and stuff like this helps immensely. I particularly loved your power systems video, as it's something I struggle with creating. I like to draw characters, but I'm not good at writing them, or making combat flow, so can I ask you how to make an interesting main cast? One piece has helped immensely with visual design and backstory, but the way that demon slayer made their actions and development coincide was fun to read. I feel like this is also an important part of writing a story, as having an active fanbase can keep your series alive and even revive it if you decide to stop writing, and good characters make those endless what ifs and side stories possible.
Thank you for taking the time to share all of that I really appreciate it! I will add your video suggestion to the list! That would be a great topic to discuss!
Tokyo revengers is definitely my favorite of the 3 discussed. Takemitchy's underdog story is refreshing compared to other protagonists wanting to get stronger. Takemitchy knew he'd never be on Mikey or drakens level in terms of strength. But his charisma has been shown to make him a delinquent legend.
Simple just read the og manga like HxH, Naruto, full metal, dbz, JoJo, etc. And just full blown copy them but retexture them a little bit. It’s successfully worked for My hero, JJk, Black Clover, and Demon Slayer so the copy paste method is the best working
I like your videos. I have been developing my own stories. I'm just not an artist. Your videos help me clearly describe the story I want portrayed graphically one day.
I love the demon slayer appriciation Im not the biggest fan myself but people slander it a little too much, also world end harem sounds like the worst best idea of all time 😂
Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of Demon Slayer either, but I included it because of its influence haha. BUT YEAH World's End Harem is an anomaly in Shonen Jump for sure lol
I wonder what do you guys think next shonen theme motif in future the authers what they make hope it would a be phantom thief theme or wildwest theme or video game world theme or treasure hunter theme or mysterious detectives theme or another ninja theme or another ghost unatual theme or another fantasy magic theme or another martial artist theme or scifi magic theme or hacker theme or delinquent esper theme
Hmmm tbh I really enjoyed the Erased Anime, and if they screwed it up compared to the manga then the manga must be extremely good. I think I need to read it tbh
That's fair! To be honest, I see where you are coming from. I enjoyed Erased a lot up until the final few episodes. Once I finished watching it I immediately binged the manga. Without spoiling, the ending is completely different and better written. There is a lot more character development and extra interactions with other characters as well. My jab was mostly directed at the anime, the manga was pretty decent!
@@MonitorComics I get ya, I understand that, unfortunately that's how it with a lot of anime adaptations and yeah I get what ya mean about the ending, I wasn't very satisfied with most of the ending either. But then right before the credits role, and Satoru see's Airi I was really happy and satisfied with that, kind of wrapped things up nicely for me and was a nice happy ending. Also for me I think the anime was just very unique and different to any other I had seen before it, I think if I started Tokyo Revengers, it just wouldn't be the same... also I really dislike its animation so I think I would need to just read the manga
@@traitorfang1416 Yeah that's valid. I personally felt like the Tokyo Revengers anime was poorly adapted as well. I also wasnt a huge fan of the animation. Manga wise, both are good! I was much more a fan of Tokyo Revengers though. Erased had a lot of great elements though as you said
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. "Good" is a subjective term. Something I think of as good is going to be different than something you see as good and will be different than the millions of other people think something is "good." When things are popular or mainstream, it means there is a lot of public interest. Yes you are correct that that doesn't inherently make it "good," but the fanbases are so large that objectively many would consider them good. Personally, I thought the Demon Slayer anime was very good. I thought the Tokyo Revengers anime was crap, but the manga was decent
@@MonitorComics Sure thing! Yes I get what you mean with it being subjective but there’s a critical way to determine whether a show/book is good or not For example, I also enjoyed watching Demon Slayer. But! I also know that it doesn’t have any character development, it has a repetitive pattern in how the story goes on, and it’s just a shonen cliché just like Black Clover. Imma even make a guess about Tanjiro as an anime only He’ll probably end up/reveal some half human half demon race to him just like other anime involved with devil/angel races
That is true! Demon Slayer is very "textbook." It does a lot of things "good." It isn't necessarily the most "unique" series and it doesn't do a lot of things "bad," but it is a "safe" story that takes heavy inspiration from successful shonen stories of the past. I won't go into the future of Demon Slayer, but I do see where youre coming from. At the end of the day, nothing is 100% original, it all comes down to how you execute it. Demon Slayer managed to appeal to a wide audience at the right time and place. I can agree that it doesn't feel like anything new, but there has to be a reason it's so highly regarded and praised
One of the best shonen mangas in my opinion is Toilet Bound Hanako-kun, it's artsyle is so unique and the storyline is so good! TBHK is honestly such a good example of a good shonen :D
CSM is just gore and quirky. Jujutsu Kaisen on the other hand not really gore but explore more on deep philosophy like morality etc which you always find in seinen manga. So, i think this elements might contribute to both series popularity.
I already got the story down for my one shot and full main series. But I need someone to draw it. I’m trying to learn myself, but does anyone know where I can hire or ask someone who knows how draw for assistance
I can see where you're coming from! It kind of reminds me of other kaijuu series like Hakaijuu and Evangellion. I haven't read too much of Kaiju No 8 though so it's a little early for me to tell
Thank you for the video suggestion! I have already covered that topic! It can be found here. I plan to make a follow up video in the future! th-cam.com/video/qDmu0kCST7M/w-d-xo.html
The difference between failed shonen trope manga and jjk is most shonen failures feel like they are just going through the motions while jjk feels like the author actually cares about the world.
Hello, is it true that manga is growing more and more especially in the United States ????, sorry, the question is that I have not been attentive to the news, please, a quick answer
Hello! I can only speak from my own experience. I currently live in the US, more specifically the state Pennsylvania. Growing up, i feel like it was still seen as weird to like anime. For a while, I didn't talk about it much because people would always tease the "weebs" in school More recently though, specifically the past few years, anime has become VERY MAINSTREAM. I'm in college now and almost everyone i am associated with likes anime, k-dramas etc I've been to a few different college parties where people would put the japanese singer Eve on the playlist haha. A lot of my friends are jocks, sorority girls, and guys who throw big parties, so it's not like I sought out people who liked anime lol Now that I am an adult, I can also see the spread of influence professionally. Manga sells REALLY WELL in the US. Recently, it was reported manga was selling WAY MORE than western comics Publishers are also starting to embrace the style. Printers like Dark Horse, Image Comics, TokyoPop, The Atlantic Press, etc all encourage the anime artstyle Popular streaming sites like Netflix have also made anime a lot more mainstream. Anime movies in theaters sell REALLY WELL too. As I said, I can only speak from what I have seen and read but I would definitely say anime HAS and will continue to grow in the US
@@MonitorComics Sure and I understand that independent publishers are increasing their sales while DC and Marvel are going downhill for not catching up.
Hi I’m Brel a 4 grader and I’m looking forward to being a mangaka and I love the shounen genre but I lack a story idea even when I find one I end up scraping it do you have any tips if yes please tell me or make a video on it. Thanks 😌😌😀
1) make the main character a disgusting self insert who does nothing but cry and scream 2) make shitty villains who are extremely overpowered and who have no motivation 3) make some garbage fights 4) *MY FRIENDS ARE MY EVERYTHING BLAH BLAH BLAH* 5) make your readers thing “wait is this naruto?” 6) fan service 7) make the main charecter cry less in the name of “charecter” development 8) always remember seinen will always be better
7:25 Hmm I’ve never heard of a main stream Shonen title other than Demon Slayer with an emphasis on family *cough cough* Dragon Ball, Hunter X Hunter, and Black Clover *cough cough*
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! What I meant by that was Demon Slayer does a good job portraying the sibling relationship and giving the parent characters a role in the plot development. As far as dragonball goes, we all know Piccolo raised Gohan LOL. Family isn't really emphasized that much, they just happen to have kids. I'm not fully caught up to Hunter X Hunter or Black Clover so I can't speak on them, at least for the time being
@@MonitorComics Family is pretty big in Dragon Ball, Goku’s interaction with Grampa Gohan at Baba’s place, Goku supporting Gohan when defeating Cell, Future Trunks’ dynamic with Vegeta, and Vegeta’s goodbye to Trunks followed by his sacrifice. But I will say, Dragon Ball does not tackle sibling relationships the same way Demon Slayer does.
@@leafyfeathers Okay you have a point with the grandpa gohan plotline. Personally, I consider Dragonball and Dragonball Z to be completely separate things. I am much more a fan of the original Dragonball Manga. So I'll give you that For the Cell saga, while I agree with your point. We can't forget Goku gave up and let an actual child deal with it. And to top it off he gave cell a senzu bean, he was p much saying "please kill my son" LOL Vegeta DID embody the theme of family a lot better than goku, so I'll give you that too. Vegeta's overall development had a lot of great elements, his relationship with future trunks and his sacrifice during the Majin Buu arc especially
14:50 wow, so someone actually made a whole story about the thought of what would happen if there was only one male left in the world and had to make a lot of women pregnant to save world's population. I remember I had thought on my own version of a story like that but that the conflict is that the male character is either gay or asexual and he knows that he should have intercourse with women to save world's population but he is very inconfortable with it and has to deal with the loss of his male friends.
There are actually a few different stories that explore that topic. Movies like Sexmission and No Men Beyond This Point have a similar concept I wouldn't let that stop you from developing your own story though, they way each of these stories executed their ideas were very different. Your "spin" is unique enough to make it stand out on its own!
Thank you for checking the video out! It actually isn't. The big 3 only refer to the top 3 best selling shonen jump manga made during a specific generation. During the 2000s. A quick google search will show you plenty of resources stating that the big 3 of the 2000s are One Piece, Bleach, and Naruto. When Dragonball was serializing in the late 80s, early 90s, the big 3 was Dragonball, Yu Yu Hakusho and Saint Seiya
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! The literal answer is it is published in Shueisha's online magazine Shōnen Jump+. The more complicated answer is the story falls into the ecchi genre which can sometimes overlap with shonen manga. Some other shonen jump manga that did something similar were Ichigo 100, To Love Ru, Yuuna And The Haunted Hot Springs, and I's. I personally would've classified it as a seinen, but shonen jump has been accepting more mature works lately like The Promised Neverland and Chainsaw Man
Tokyo Revenger plot is so predictable i have no idea why people enjoy it tho. Added to that an absolutly unsufferable protagonist that spend his time crying..
While I agree it has many elements we've seen before, it is popular for a reason. The data doesn't lie, so there must still be a market for a story like Jujutsu Kaisen
It's a pretty common opinion... I respect your opinion if you enjoyed it, however the last few episodes were incredibly rushed and in my opinion, poorly written The manga was much better though, so there's that at least
@@MonitorComics i have seen almost no one agree with that comment lmao. erased is thought to be one of the best and well written anime ever. so idk where ur getting ur info from man but it’s incredible.

The last 2 or 3 episodes though butchered the entire show for me (and many others). With that in mind the series dropped to like a 6/10 for me. If you go peek at some reviews on sites like MyAnimeList you'll see all of the critical reviews I'm honestly surprised to hear that you've heard its one of the most well written anime series because that's just not true lol. My favorite Shonen as of the Moment is Tokyo Revengers but overall id have to Say FMAB and Hunter X Hunter.
Great picks! Thanks for taking the time to share!
Same
aight I gotta watch jujutsu Kaisen. LEGIT THE CHARACTERS HAVE SO MUCH PLOT ARMOUR IN OTHER SHONEN ANIMES. I NEED THIS.
It just comes with the territory ya know
I wouldn't let that fear stop you! It sounds like you planned out a lot so best of luck developing this project!
My favorite shonen series so far are Edens Zero, Bakuman, Ayakashi Triangle, One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist, Black Cat, and Rurouni Kenshin.
Those are some great picks! Ayakashi Triangle has been on my radar for a while, I'm a huge fan of Black Cat and To Love Ru so I know I'll enjoy it haha. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!
@@MonitorComics No problem!
Recommendation: Hunter x Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho.
Thanks for sharing Monitor! These are some great gems 💎! 💪🏾🔥😤

Why read Naruto when naruto is a copy of HxH and dbz?

You da man Monitor!
Thank you Brandon!!
Successful doesn’t necessarily mean good, specially with the Tokyo Revengers and Demon Slayer on the thumbnail
Yes I get what you mean with it being subjective
but there’s a critical way to determine whether a show/book is good or not
For example, I also enjoyed watching Demon Slayer. But! I also know that it doesn’t have any character development, it has a repetitive pattern in how the story goes on, and it’s just a shonen cliché just like Black Clover.
Imma even make a guess about Tanjiro as an anime only
He’ll probably end up/reveal some half human half demon race to him just like other anime involved with devil/angel races
Interesting!
I'm glad! Thanks for taking the time to watch!
One of the best shonen mangas in my opinion is Toilet Bound Hanako-kun, it's artsyle is so unique and the storyline is so good! TBHK is honestly such a good example of a good shonen :D
VERY TRUE. I love Toilet Bound Hanako-kun. I actually just preordered the art book from Yen Press last week LOL
CSM is just gore and quirky. Jujutsu Kaisen on the other hand not really gore but explore more on deep philosophy like morality etc which you always find in seinen manga. So, i think this elements might contribute to both series popularity.
Great points! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!

For a while, I didn't talk about it much because people would always tease the "weebs" in school
More recently though, specifically the past few years, anime has become VERY MAINSTREAM. I'm in college now and almost everyone i am associated with likes anime, k-dramas etc
I've been to a few different college parties where people would put the japanese singer Eve on the playlist haha. A lot of my friends are jocks, sorority girls, and guys who throw big parties, so it's not like I sought out people who liked anime lol
Now that I am an adult, I can also see the spread of influence professionally. Manga sells REALLY WELL in the US. Recently, it was reported manga was selling WAY MORE than western comics
Publishers are also starting to embrace the style. Printers like Dark Horse, Image Comics, TokyoPop, The Atlantic Press, etc all encourage the anime artstyle
Popular streaming sites like Netflix have also made anime a lot more mainstream.

So I'll give you that
For the Cell saga, while I agree with your point. We can't forget Goku gave up and let an actual child deal with it. And to top it off he gave cell a senzu bean, he was p much saying "please kill my son" LOL
Vegeta DID embody the theme of family a lot better than goku, so I'll give you that too.

Movies like Sexmission and No Men Beyond This Point have a similar concept
I wouldn't let that stop you from developing your own story though, they way each of these stories executed their ideas were very different.
Your "spin" is unique enough to make it stand out on its own!
how to get big like jujutsu in one simple step: copy naruto just like it did.
I mean... LOL

Tokyo revengers was just a take on crows and the inspired by the former, the worst
I'm going to continue watching the video but Dragon Ball is apart of the big three of Shonen manga just to state that
Thank you for checking the video out!
Wait why the fuck is world's end harem a shonen manga?
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! The literal answer is it is published in Shueisha's online magazine Shōnen Jump+. The more complicated answer is the story falls into the ecchi genre which can sometimes overlap with shonen manga. Some other shonen jump manga that did something similar were Ichigo 100, To Love Ru, Yuuna And The Haunted Hot Springs, and I's. I personally would've classified it as a seinen, but shonen jump has been accepting more mature works lately like The Promised Neverland and Chainsaw Man
How to write a successful shonen
Step one DO NOT imitate or use the same tired old dragon ball tropes
Hey some one going to reply to me I commented down there
Tokyo Revenger plot is so predictable i have no idea why people enjoy it tho.
Added to that an absolutly unsufferable protagonist that spend his time crying..
juju kaien is your run of the mill shows and it sucks .
While I agree it has many elements we've seen before, it is popular for a reason. The data doesn't lie, so there must still be a market for a story like Jujutsu Kaisen
The big three are bleach Naruto and one piece is crazy 😂
that is literally the definition of shonen jump's "big 3"
“we all know how bad the erased anime was” EXCUSE ME SIR WHAT-💀

Like I said, a good chunk of the anime was a solid 8/10. The last 2 or 3 episodes though butchered the entire show for me (and many others).
With that in mind the series dropped to like a 6/10 for me. If you go peek at some reviews on sites like MyAnimeList you'll see all of the critical reviews
I'm honestly surprised to hear that you've heard its one of the most well written anime series because that's just not true lol. The resolution of the anime was anime original and different from the manga lol
I could see the argument for the manga having good writing because like I said, it was done much better
