It's fun to hear Patton talk about how our minds were blown when Letterman first appeared. It's worth all this searching for metaphors! It was THAT weird and GREAT!
I'm 40 so Letterman was already a well established public figure for me. I remember the big to do they made of him moving to CBS. Which is when I first started watching him.
So I have fond memories of him and his humor was still a big influence. But I can't imagine what it must've been like for a kid, say, in high school or so when Letterman got that first show of his.
Just how insane that must've been that they let this guy on TV doing the weird ass stuff he'd do. And not some local station or public access thing: REAL TV, network TV, "We had three channels in my day!"-era TV.
Must've woken up the creativity and imagination of so many young Gen Xers.
Letterman for them was probably a lot like what Conan's show was for people my own age.
I love how goddamn fun Patton is even when he's sort of stumbling through a segment.

Patton's story with the ex-GF's description of Dave as 'uncomfortable to watch' reminds me of what some people said about Conan when he started, which was often the same basic stuff: trying too hard, not trying hard enough, doesn't respect his job, etcetera.... then there were people like me who thought both guys were usually funny as hell. Also, gotta say, I'm a huge fan of Halloween III and was absolutely thrilled to hear him make the reference.

It's a bit difficult when the host is funnier than the guest but Conan always knows when to come in and save the guest. That's a trait of a truly great host.

Oh okay. Thanks for telling me. All i know was that nbc chose him over letterman in 92 to take over Carson's tonight show. People say he stole the show but the network made that decision, twice. I guess NBC just loves controversy.

Pop Can no way, I like Oswalt every time - he's genuine and I remember the way Letterman was a mindblower when he first came on. It's hard to image now, but I was confused and that's what he's trying to describe. Love him always as an antedote to fake.
