Thanks for this vid. I am prepping to build new gates for my neighbor's front porch. SHE would like to have their 2 dogs join her on the porch when she is reading or whatnot...and it will only work if the 2 boys (German shepards) can't just run off and chase things. I learned a bit more about it from you, and wanted to let you know I do appreciate the video. Well done!
I bet your cats appreciate all your hard work! Our cats would jump right over the gate. Have you thought of building a catio for them? That way they could be outside even when you are in. That would be a very cool project.
Just built a fence and gate for my doggo. Can confirm the learning process. You can study up as much as you want but until you start working on a project you don't know what challenges you will face. Well done.
Great job, looks awesome. Thanks for sharing the tips and esp. the mistakes so we can all learn from them and hopefully avoid making the same errors! 🎉
Nice work! Love your ability to own up to and quickly rectify mistakes. I think I would have used galvanized wire netting instead of posts, but your sliding gate matches your existing porch rail system, so it looks better. Your cats are very sweet!
Very good video. Love how you leave the part in about going to H.D. 3 times. How many times have I thought I had everything only to find out I didn’t remember….
For the slide operation, you may consider a length of angle iron or flat stock on the back of the gate and a couple of brackets or wheels mounted to the railing for the angle to sit in and glide.
Ryan - can you provide more info on this. My gate is pretty wobbly so I think the wheels need to run in a track or something, but I'. not sure the best way to do it
@@lindsaymeloy3808 If you screw a piece of flat stock iron (maybe 1/4" x 1") from where your gate lands at the post between stairways to the railing end, you could attach some wheels or some other hardware to the two posts and possibly to the rail closer to where it stops when it's fully open. You will need to stand off the flat stock with some kind of spacer like a stack of washers or maybe a small nut. This will space it out from the gate to give a rail to ride on the wheels.
Good job! Do you have any problems with the balusters getting hung on the top brace when you slide it? I'm trying to get ideas for my sliding gate on my pool deck.
Thank you for your comment! I made my top braces a little wider than the gate to allow for wiggle room. When I roll the gate open/closed I lean it straight so the balusters don't catch. My gate does naturally lean on the braces.
just built a gate but find it's walking around, not tracking straight. did this happen to you and if so how did you remedy? thanks. good job, looks great
They were both actually found outside and adopted. So we aren't sure what they are but the gray one looks a little bit like a Russian Blue. We assume the white tabby has a little Siamese in him because of his coloring.
I love the honesty! We all do it, and it’s refreshing to see a video that’s real. Awesome job!
Thank you so much!!

Thank you so much for your comment! I’m glad some parts of the video were helpful and I wish you luck in your build 🙂
WOW! Fantastic demonstration. Love those kitties!
Thank you for doing this on TH-cam. After our digs running of the porch today, I was looking for ideas for a gate.
Glad I could help!

Outstanding motivation, great job, 30 + years in the trades and you are a AWESOME.
Thank you so much!!
I commend you for your tenacity! I’m planning on making a porch gate to keep our dog in who runs every opportunity she has. Thanks for the idea.👍🏽

I would love to build a catio one day and I think the galvanized wire would be perfect for that!
It looks so good!!! Loved the Amber humor in the video also! 👏🏼
Thank you!! Trying to get more comfortable in front of the camera haha

Thank you! And yes, I am a Home Depot regular 😅
Always have to adapt. Great job!
Thank you!
Thanks for keeping it real.
very nice. but don't cats jump?
Great job. I will employ some of your ideas.

Our cats could jump over that ours set on top of the rail all time
Nice eye candy she is cute
Amazing job done🤞
Thank you so much! We are loving it
Good job. You should be proud of yourself.
Thank you for your comment!
Anytime someone tries to build something and succeeds should be applauded because you didn't call the guy.
Great job!
Good job , great video dear.
Thank you!
Parabéns, belo trabalho.🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

I put rigid wheels on mine because I read others had the same issue if you used castor wheels. The rigid wheels work great for me. Hope this helps!
@@westonwillow the rigid wheels were what I used. I just expected it to work better. that's for the reply
Call project I’m thinking about building something just like that and by the way, you’re a babe wow!!!!
Good job!!👍
Great Video!
I have to do something very similar. Thank you for the ideas..
You should buy a catio (cat patio) or make one. If it is made properly it will be cat proof. ✌️♥️🇺🇲
I love catios! Unfortunately, my HOA probably won’t allow for one.
I’m impressed at your fortitude, try , try again until you got it right. Well done!
Thank you so much! As frustrating as it is to fail, it is always a learning experience. Gotta keep going!
great Job!!!
Thank you!!
I did the same thing, but my cats just jumped right over my fence. I had to build it higher.😅
Your beautiful gotta love a hardworking women
4 more smaller wheels attached to existing rail as a guide bearing system😊
I wish I looked as pretty as you.

what breed are your cats? 😻

really? Your cats are literally saying thanks for the food but if you think this gate is keeping me anywhere, your batshit crazy
You do realize cats jump,right?
Sure do!
My big boy wouldn’t be able to jump over that but my other two would 😂
Don’t your cats jump then?
