- Life on Mars was a BBC TV crime drama series aired in 2006 and 2007, and was a mix of 1970s Sweeney style policing combined with some Dr Who time travel.
It starred John Simm as a policeman in 2006 who wakes up after a car accident to discover that he has time-travelled to 1973, and now works under Philip Glenister's character, Gene Hunt.
Their wheels of choice was a Ford Cortina MK3, registration number KJM212K. But all is not as it appears with this car, so join us as we find out more.

Would've to see you checking out all the Car SOS restorations, how many were done and sold on for a quick buck, and how many have fallen into disrepair because they were rushed for the TV show?
A few have mentioned that. Some will have been sold on if the owner has passed away (the Quattro was auctioned after the owners death). You would hope most were in the hands of those it was done for, but will start having a browse.
Yep. Really enjoyed that show and the original basis of it but I have to admit of late it’s not been so enjoyable and almost a bit ‘uncomfortable’ to watch, restoring cars that the owner is either way too ill to use or even worse so close to death they never actually see it finished. You just know the next of kin are not bothered and will flog it as soon as the cameras are gone. A bit like Wheeler Dealers, the productions on that went more American over time (literally) and so much work went on it was more of a ‘ta dah’ at the end than the simple show when Ed started twirling spanners.
The allegro police car in the opening the show was a later one too as it had the wrong boot lid for 1973. I’ll put my anorak away now!
You are correct, several Oscar nerd points awarded...
The last I heard the allegro is in Northern Ireland
The later boot lid on older Allegros was a common sight. Following rear end shunts, it was common practice for the damaged boot lid on an early Allegro's to be replaced with a new later type, due to early bootlids becoming quickly unavailable.
Oscar Can you Please Do The Jeneva Motor Show alfa 147 Demo Car from 2OOO?
Yes it may not have been a perfect 👌 television 📺 series. But really enjoyed watching it. Sadly like so many British T.V shows it finished far too soon, as you say only 16 episodes produced !.........
Totally agree
No matter how famous a car seems to be .. I have the feeling that this car is simply being bought for the sole purpose of selling it on for a massive profit ... or it is a complete dog ..either way seems rather sad that it cannot be bought and used by an owner that actually cares enough about it to keep her
Nick’s had it 16 years
The last I heard about the Ashes to ashes Quattro was that stunt car was sold off years ago and the stills car is still laying outside at the BBC on the casualty set
What’s a stills car? 😂 The car at Elstree left there in 2014,was restored and sold for Children In Need.
Shout out to Pete C @Cortina City
I hope n pray he's OK
He's gone very quiet.
@@dave-huston-dublin yeah I know , so unlike Pete , I'm worried 😟

@@dave-huston-dublin yeah yeah me too
Yea, he’s one seriously talented guy, his work is of fabulous quality.
Another good video. I loved Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes, some great actors and some great lines delivered by Phil Glennister. Unfortunately, it looks like the car went to people more interested in the money than the car, but at least it has survived which is all that really matters.
Really enjoyed life on Mars, very dark and funny, Ashes to Ashes worth a shout out too
I was in love with , the lady Cunstable her accent is sooooo sexy
Was great to watch the both programs shame it was a short series
@petergrinnell2500 quality over quantity I suppose anyday, all the episodes were great to watch
Thank you, very interesting. I am already looking forward to the Ashes-to-Ashes quattro. That appears to be dodgy too. On Ashes-to-Ashes it has a 1980 V-suffix plate, but the quattro only came later 1980, so it shouldn't be anything earlier than a W-plate. But what is worse, the TV car has the Type-85 facelift which came in late 1984 and corresponds to a B-prefix the earliest!
It’s regularly at the NEC classic car shows.
...not only an N-reg plate on the back but a post-facelift 2000E badge (which would have tied in with the N-reg) and the post facelift flash on the bootlid. Interesting that the front sports the GXL lights, grille and badge (post-facelift the main headlights were rectangular with round driving lights...)
My father had a Daytona Yellow 1.6 GXL back in the 70's. After that he had a Purple Velvet Metallic, 2000E. Both were lovely and great looking cars. The boot lid trim with a dark line through it, on the Life on Mars car, was a perfect give-away too. Having said that, it became a great tv star with all it's irregularities.
Answer: In the ITV drama "This is personal - the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper." George Oldfield played by Alun Armstrong drove a brown one, reg plate OEV 868M.
Good TV series, Ashes to Ashes wasn't bad but had lots of errors such as a Rover 600 parked in the background in one episode.
I believe that was because someone arrived & parked it in the intended scene immediately before shooting so there was no time to either obscure it nor get it moved 😂
@andyb3666
I've just looked them up, So many errors in Ashes to Ashes a series could be made from them.
E last time I saw it I was parked next at the MK3 o'clock at the AGM in the mid teens.s said it was an early facelift 2000E.
The quad light conversion is very popular. Otherwise it's std 2000E spec the front indicators would have had orange inserts
The GXL like the E came with a vynil roof as std.
The show didn't really need to be accurate as it was all inside the head of John Simm's character as he was laying in a hospital bed in a coma and his mind put him back to a time when he was a young child.
A K plate was 1971 1972!!
My dad had a sloped dash 1972 K reg 2.0 GXL automatic MK3 in maroon red colour, car was beautiful and I did love watching Life On Mars.
The car was a 74 2000e it had been converted to twin lights before they got it for the show as i saw that car for sale on sheffield before it was used in the show and as of tye plate on it k is late 71 early 72 as i have a gt on a k and that is april 72
It also had the wrong front seats in it as well. GXL seats were high back and plastic whereas the 2000E had no head rests with nylon seats plus, the doors had plastic wood callings on them.
I was hoping a Cortina nerd would arrive to point something else out. You haven't disappointed!
The pre-facelift GT had the high-back seats but I am pretty sure the GXL did not.
@@SabotsLibres You're right. Low back seats in vinyl with a factory cloth option I think.
Another excellent video with tons of homework put in to find out the back story. Always amuses me when production companies make a mess of altering age details on a car (badly) . Most of them are probably too young to know the vehicles in any depth.
I loved life on Mars by far better than Ashes to ashes even though I was around in both decades Life on Mars was more like the Sweeny as you mention.
Nah ashes to ashes for me.keely hawes and the music of the 80s
I had identical the car as the 2000E with the rectangular lights back in 1979 fantastic motor which i still had it.
In 86, I had a (facelift) 1976 2000 GT with the tombstone seats. Loads of fun.
I did enjoy Life on Mars however!
I don’t want to be a pedant but you could get a vinyl roof on your mk3 Cortina from day one in 1971 . My mate has a GXL J reg with one on
Cool! Next to the Quattro from Ashes to Ashes!!!
How about doing the cars from 1980s BBC TV series Howard’s Way. It had loads of interesting cars including a Lamborghini Countach and Ken Masters (Stephen Yardley) various Renault GTAs
One I hadn't thought of, will add it to the list.
@@oscarsgarage447 Okay thanks other cars you might want to look up are Jack Rofls Jaguar XJ6 Jan Howard’s Lotus Excel or Eclat, Charles Frere also drove a red Bentley Turbo there was also a VW Golf convertible and an Isuzu Pizzaz!!
Great videos Oscar, I love how you find out about these old icons. Are you able to trace American cars?
Unfortunately not, the mycarcheck is only for UK registered cars.
K reg was actually a 1971,72 plate not a 73.i no because i am one lol another good upload tho.
You are perfectly right. He couldn’t even get this “fact” right.
I only know about this cut and shut from top gear.
I remember seeing the car for sale in around 2005 in classic ford magazine in a classic dealer advert by “AfFORDable Classic” the asking price if I recall was £2995, which would tie in with the £2500 paid but who knows? maybe had passed through other hands too since then, before the film company or possibly they bought it straight from them, Another great vid 👍
Thanks!
Enjoyed thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
What about the durango 95 from clockwork orange
Interesting....
BTW when did you last see an Audi 100 LS on the road? On an L or M reg.
Weirdly, I was driving on the A158 near Lincoln recently, and saw a whole row of early-70s Audi 100 Coupés waiting to turn out from a side road. I don't think I've ever seen one in real life before, and then a whole load of them all turn up at once.
Pete C. Cortina City. Check him out.
Good Sunday morning vid!
Any progress on the blue 'elephant in the room' or has that one now been kicked into the long grass?
Its currently the elephant in the room next door, but will return...
K reg was 1971
anyone know whats happened to Delboys capri?
No mystery here - it's in the British Motor Museum at Gaydon.
There were 2 …the MkII got scrapped and the MkIII is on loan to the British Motor Museum in Gaydon (as Adam says)
Great detective work as usual 👍
Are you joking. 2 minutes on Google would have told you all that.
@@johng7304 why watch the video then ??

Why not just buy a 72/73 GXL for the show instead of messing around with a 2000E
Where's terrys Capri from minder... must be scrapped.
Is it heck.just watch the furious driving channel.he followed it being restored after a engine bay fire a couple of years ago.its in mint condition now and sold for a fortune not long ago along with the yellow arthur daily daimler.
@@ivanfernyhough3851 Wonder what happened to the wide arched Mk2 Escort in the background of the start of the program ?, i remember Fibresports selling the arch kit as the "Minder" Escort though it was really a flat front X Pack kit.
@@MarkycarandbikestuffI'm seriously hoping that it's true but I'm fairly certain that I read its very much around and in good condition. If anybody else knows for definite please let us all know. I must say that I'm very much a fan of the X pack fords, in particular the mk2 Escort and also the silver mk2 Capri that appeared in just 1 or 2 episodes of the professionals.
Rusty rubbish
So another video telling people things they already knew and all plastered over the internet. How about doing a video of a famous car, finding it and telling us something we don’t know.
Sorry? It takes a long time to delve into the details of each car and I’m thankful that Oscar’s Garage does it all for us.
@@barryrathbone amazing how I did it in 2 minutes. Clearly you aren’t keyed up on searching the vast internet.
So you wasted your time watching the video and now you've wasted even more time commenting on it , genius.
