Really spot on. Still just 7500 views in 5 years... Kenans insights and articulations need to reach the broader public.

One of the favourite phrases used by those seeking to shut down a debate is, "You are contributing to a toxic atmosphere", when all you are actually doing is trying to encourage a meaningful discussion.

Great talk by Kenan Malik on free speech, censorship and inadvertently playing into the hands of power.

We need to hear more from Kenan and his like. The censors seem to be winning at the moment

nail on the head ... I expect the struggle against people that find exception to the primacy of free speech will never end ... it's just the censors and their "special" rationale that change

question should death threats be counted as free speech i personally say yes but in exchange the government has to do smth to protect the target of the death threats as well as provide mental healthcare to all sides

Was it Voltaire or Thomas Paine who said something to the effect of: "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it."?

Thank you kindly for disabusing me. So many misattributions!
Her quote, attributed to her, should be etched in stone.

be suspicious when ever "offending" people is conflated with inciting violence and hatred against disadvantaged minorities. could have focused more on speaking truth to power, where power lies, and who he believes is actually benefitting from this discourse.
how do you manage private companies censoring journalists and employees? what about businesses with no principles who just push whatever message is profitable at the time?
this all makes sense in the abstract, but we live a world defined by private ownership and profit. having some concrete, real life examples of policy (and not just random acts of terrorism) would be great
