  • Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was not only the founder of the Whitney Museum, she was a sculptor in her own right. She created the Titanic Memorial, the immense statue of Colon in Huelva, Spain, the WW1 memorial in St Nazaire France ( that was later destroyed by the Nazis) and many statues around the US and the world. She funded a field hospital in France called the American Ambulance hospital and there is a famous statue near Constitution Hall that honors the women of the US. I decided to try to figure out where all her major sculptures were and make a video to honor her artwork and her patronage of American artists. Morgan Russell, Edgar McAdams, Laura McLane, and Frederick Roth were all sponored by her. She was a trailblazer and helped thousands of soldiers in WW1 make it home and did many things to honor American servicemen and women until she died in 1940. She was Anderson Cooper's great aunt but is best known as the founder of the Whitney Museum in NYC
