fantastic! it's as if he's using no pressure on the bow or strings at all yet he gets such a big sound out of the instrument :D

Nope he plays near the bridge. When you play there you must to press more, and if you want to use big bow you must to press more again. Obviously that's not press, that's weight

@@cesars8090 Many people confuse weight and pressure. The bow exerts pressure on the string. The player can use weight or active muscular force to create the pressure between the bow and the string. Regarding the sound on this video (which, of course, was originally made on motion picture film, not video tape), the sound was recorded in a separate recording session with a microphone quite close to the violin, and then dubbed onto the film.

I don't understand why some people here are opsessed with later "deterioration of technique" of master Menuhin.
First of all, every reasonable grown and psychologically balanced man would expect and consider quite normal the technique deterioration at every single music performer in the world with age. There is no exception to that and God has arranged things that way. Musicians just choose easier pieces at their old age, so you might be tricked to believe he is the same as young, but that is wrong assumption.
Secondly, "deterioration" occurred quite normally much later then this video date, so there is no point in mentioning one natural normal process here instead of praising really perfect exhibition of Mr Menuhin.
Thirdly, Mr Menuhin left plentiful of recordings of his repertoire during his successful carrier so lamenting about his how pitiful his "deterioration" is, cannot be anything else but hypocrisy.
So, taking the previous considerations into account, my assumption is these people stressing the "deterioration" of Menuhin technique, have some psychological insufficiency, maybe immature impulse to present themselves as sort of superb music consumers (whatever that might be in their twisted imagination) or they are might be mediocre musicians with unfulfilled expectations personally, misusing Internet to boost their ego.

I am a huge admirer of Menuhin but it is undeniable that as he aged he lost much of his technical control, most notably in his right arm. I left one at intermission of one of his later recitals because it was so painful to listen to. On the other hand, I was sitting in the 2nd row for a performance of the Beethoven Concerto in NY (with the National Symphony conducted by Rostropovich) during which his bow strayed to the wrong side of the bridge, but even so it was a transcendent performance - I had tears running down my face in the slow movement.

He was so brilliant in his younger days. What a shame his technique deteriorated so badly later in life.

I'm not sure what deterioration you're talking about since he really reached his peak in the 70's which was well after this video

    • @Musicrafter12

@@rafthegoat Some of his later recordings are actually rather embarrassing. His bow technique may not have deteriorated for reasons within his control, but deteriorate it did. There is a recording of him playing Paganini Violin Concerto No 1 in the early 1960s and it's honestly very hard to listen to; most of his ricochet and spiccato are simply horrendous. He clearly was not able to control his bowing hand very well.

@@Musicrafter12 I don't know to which recording you're referring but there are multiple recordings of his in the latter end of his career like the 1972 Ciaconna in Gstaad where his bowing is far from "embarassing" (and most of the recordings of this era are of this standard). Granted I agree that his technique changed, but was it for the worse? I'm not so sure about that. The sound is not as clear as before but there is more maturity to his sound and deeper interpretations to his music. His earlier recordings are impressive but I've hardly ever been moved by them, the near perfection of his technique ironically a distraction from conveying his interpretation. His later recordings are however much more mature which to me amounts to a higher quality of playing.

He just got bored and stopped practicing as much later in life.

@@Tritone Not really true, Menuhin suffered from Cerebral Palsy later in his life which is he dedicated himself more to teaching then performing. However after the second world war he did get more involved in politics and humanitarian work.
